RIP old thread

You will be missed.

any DS for this doggo?

What are some good vintage DS soundfonts? Something with a similar sound to this: hedgewizard.bandcamp.com/track/ancient-vibrations

what are these threads

what is some of the most lo-fi, minimal, cassette-sounding (if that makes any sense) dungeon synth you guys know of?
a recurring thread for sharing and discussing dungeon synth, a genre derived from black metal that sounds like the medieval music you'd hear in oldschool rpgs

Probably pic related

...

Essential dungeon synth movies:

Nosferatu (both)
Legend
Häxan
The Keep
Die Nibelungen
Dark Crystal

This is some good minimalist DS. idk if it's lo-fi enough for you.

This guy just used the default windows shit with Guitar Pro, I'm pretty sure. I've spoken with him before.

Fucking love this album.

I like Nekrophile Rekords and Sigillum S and Hunting Lodge and I have copies of Haxan and Dark Crystal and what is this cool-looking-(sounding?) genre

Can you still upload images that have .rars embedded in them to Sup Forums?

it's for black metal fags

Every single minimalist lo-fi dungeon synth release from this point on will have to live in the shadows of Hedge Wizard. The man absolutely killed that type of DS

Are you sure? It sounds a lot more lo-fi and analog than GS Wavetable.

it's DnD nerd shit
nothing glamorous about it

Just came out today, was well received on the DS facebook group. It's pretty good background music seeing as it's ambient.

chroniclesofjest.bandcamp.com/album/yeomans-tale-2

>go to his BC
>crayon-colored album art
>those fucking OSCILLATOR INTERFERENCES
does it get any more kvlt than this?

Speaking of kvlt, check out this Fomorian.

It's the dude who inspired the Fimir, who are undoubtedly the most kvlt shit to ever come out of a fantasy universe.

And they're getting an "update" soon as Fimirach. The first miniatures don't look very good (ugly patterns on the armor) but the daemonfriends will at least look cool.

here's a fimir

I'm sure you all know about the fimir

if you don't you must exit the dungeon

Shit you're not wrong.

I like Lord Lovidicus and guys like him but Hedge Wizard fucking transcends the style.

Only close second to Hedge Wizard imo is Lord Caduceus Xul. It's also hard to compare since Caduceus released this tape in Lithuania in 1995 so it's not like he had a choice of being lo-fi.

youtube.com/watch?v=CL9lgbBgajU

rec me some DS with excellent toot-toots

Looked up our conversation. He composed in guitarpro with GS Wavetable, and then played the audio through his amp and recorded with a microphone. That's where his lo-fi sound comes from. Real clever.

new to music theory

what's the difference between medieval dorian mode and modern dorian mode?
aren't they both regular diatonic scales?

What's a good soundfont player for Ableton?

Nevermind, sampler works fine. Where does one even get soundfonts these days?

I can get you some good ones. Any way I can contact you?

bump

illusorygames.bandcamp.com/album/the-thanes-hammer

Made a dungeon synth album. I hope some of you find it enjoyable.

stumpbeard at geemail. Appreciate it, dude. Don't sign me up for horse porn unless it's kvlt.

Very enjoyable user, what gear do you use? If physical hardware isn't your thing, what soundfont?

how do i into dungeon synth?
anyone got a chart?

Here's a flowchart I made the other day.

I wouldn't mind having these threads all year; there's nothing else this comfy on Sup Forums.

really agree with this except I feel like Forgotten Pathways should be somewhere on the left side as another option coming from Hedge Wizard.

Most of the sounds were created with default Ableton tension instruments.

thanks, friendo. i'll give it a look!

No Mortiis on here?

Even Burzum needs a spot on here.

Wasn't dungeon synth kosher for /nbbmn/? Is this /nbbmn/ hardcore edition?

Feeling emotional and just want to say I love you guys. DS is a great ass community of people just sharing their projects that will never get any attention and it just feels so for the love of the genre. You guys rock.

I get that feeling too, it's such an odd community in that it only really attracts pretty dedicated fans. For how small of a genre it is it has such a surprising amount of content out there.

It's that minus nsbm arguments so it's better imho

Is there any NS Dungeon synth?

the first Dungeon Synth thread to ever live long enough to die of the bump limit

I like this old Swedish collection from some past decade

ftp://ftp.lysator.liu.se/pub/awe32/soundfonts/

Probably but it wouldn't make sense considering it has such a fantasy and/or medieval theme and sound.

These would have gotten on there, but I ran out of space. They're on the essentials charts though.

Hopefully we can make this the second.

Cain - Child of Cold (1999)

youtube.com/watch?v=wnxqKS8bn5g

My personal favorite DS album

I spend a lot of time up north in the woods in a cottage listening to DS and BM in the past month.

youtube.com/watch?v=RSGkfMjQT5w

This album has been getting a lot of attention recently.

Didn't Chaucerian Myth come out this year? Interesting how its already got a place in this.

Not too sure what "more epic" or "more kvlt" means though.

has it? I posted it once in the last thread. I'd admit the production is terrible but its a 90s DS album so its something I think we all are accepting by now.

Chaucerian Myth did just come out this year.

"More epic" means a more expansive and grand sound; "more kvlt" means a more vintage, black metal-esque sound.

>tfw you have a giant folder of uncompleted DS songs.

I could swear I've seen it about four times over the past week.

Also:
>off by one

How the fuck are you all /dsd/!?

What are you all listening to?

Listening to King Crimson right now to pay my respects to Greggie. They kind of sound a bit "medieval" themselves.

this picture always makes me want a Mortiis Black Metal/DS themed surf album like youtube.com/watch?v=ymGo2q-SSOw

actually answering your question: youtube.com/watch?v=gbsViaYiWws

gg guys just found this thread and this genre

10/10 gonna start downloading and listening to this shit for my gurps campaigns

>how the are you
Listening to DS and playing OSRS, my favorite form of escapism. No matter how bad things are, knowing I can get comfy like that is always calming. Feeling pretty lonely otherwise, probably since all I do is listen to DS and play OSRS.
>listening
Evilfeast - Wolves of Hyperborean Frost

Not exactly a full Dungeon Synth album, but the last track covers a song from Hliðskjálf.
Forgotten Pathways is incredible. One of the first DS albums I listened to that blew me away.

I have a starter pack for you: mega.nz/#!4EkFmZYK!iPE3VT7c5DYu55Ib5Qcvvgn6ddWnwKtSqHWbADxKckQ

If there's a password on that it's: fuckyeahDS

I suggest using it in conjunction with

Onoskelis
The Hecate Prophecies in Your Cold Throne

The problem with charts for DS is that it's such a rapidly-expanding genre that almost all of these albums will be one-upped or overshadowed in the next year. This chart has too many obscure, inconsequential releases.

The best way to do an actual flowchart would be to do it by artist and stick to the classics and modern favourites (Depressive Silence, Burzum, Mortiis, Lord Lovidicus, Sequestered Keep, Erang, Forgotten Pathways, Til
Det Bergens, Lamentation, etc.

Holy shit thank you

This is all so inspiring.

Most of the albums on there have been around for a few years though.

forgot link
youtube.com/watch?v=86ERoKMa0lo

dude they are mostly 90s albums. But I agree that there is so much DS and the greats haven't really been decided on completely yet.

I just go through RYM and youtube to find good stuff

Always glad to help. Making /dsd/ a friendly and comfy community is my main goal.

listening to this 2015 release

Why not give the black metal thread a little bump?

Because DS > BM

>tfw you know more about Dungeon Synth than wikipedia

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo-Medieval_music

You can't have one without the other.

Dungeon Synth tip of the day: Use chord inversions and lots of them!

Official artist of /dsd/: Gustave Dore

This is true, it's just harder to fuck up ds. Usually if you like some of it you're going to like just about all of it.

We need more Dore and More DS

one more. Do any modern editions of these books use these illustrations?

Anyone else listen to this Vinterriket album? I was expecting some cold black metal, but instead got a modern day Dungeon Synth classic. Really worth checking out.

erang.bandcamp.com/album/another-world-another-time

Hop on kid. We are going to a far distant land.

some cool vst's here

vst4free.com/index.php?plug-ins=Folk/Ethnic&l=0

The sound of 2017. Just watch as hipsters fawn over it like every other microgenre.

Honestly this is my biggest fear. Although I think the whole fantasy and medieval aspect of it should be able to turn away most people who listen to music for social statues.

Shit like Game of Thrones has normalised that. It'll happen, it always does.

inb4 "LOL RUNESCAPE MUSIC XD" when/if DS gets popular

Normally I wouldn't care, but the dungeon synth community is so small and yet so prolific that a wave of 'trendy' imitations would tear it apart. At the moment I can explore the DS tag on bandcamp and pretty much every album on there will do something for me. I don't want that washed out by thousands of artists who don't have any deep knowledge of or love for black metal, sound collage or dark ambient.

Thats what we call it now though

The Elder Scrolls - Daggerfall (1996)

youtube.com/watch?v=LiEzVx375w4

Depressive Silence - Demo 1996

Oftentimes rated the greatest Dungeon Synth tape out there

youtube.com/watch?v=Q-bTcOEHkqg

I'm new
where should I begin?

...

Lots of charts and good albums have been posted in this thread. Do you listen to black metal? Give Burzum's Dungeon synth albums a listen, as well as other essentials like Depressive Silence and Mortiis.

Absolutly incredible album, but I feel like The Darkened Empire and the split with Mightiest are often underrated as well. Almost as beautiful as Mourning.

Last time I listened to black metal was about 6-7 years ago with behemoth (inb4 it's actually death, idk dude)

Anyone listened to Eltamin Pegase? His second album is quite dungeony, with a more general electronic tint.

eltaminpegase.bandcamp.com/album/za-stary-kr-lestwa

If you've listened to the early Behemoth albums then you've already heard some good potential Dungeon Synth. Ancient from Sventevith is one of my favorite DS songs.

youtube.com/watch?v=DCv0Dghlm10

Dungeon Synth and black metal go together very well, and are often essential to one another. Some good albums that incorporate both are:

Caladan Brood - Echoes of Battle
Summoning - Dol Guldur
Burzum - Det Som Engang Var

selections from Coil - Horse Rotorvator (1986)
Industrial, Proto-Dungeon Synth

The Golden Section
youtube.com/watch?v=_8YDi-UF_TM

The First Five Minutes after Death
youtube.com/watch?v=egpe34BNJuE

I wouldn't call anything in Horse Rotorvator close to DS apart from maybe Golden Section.
