They are very old traditions, they come from a time when people here just lived in a constant state of warfare, days where war and long, risky, sea voyages with the aim of conquest and pillage in foreign unknwon lands were practically the only business for the common man.
Nowadays I think most people are too civilized and comfy to understand the charm of it, of voluntarily exposing yourself to apparently dumb and pointless dangers and risks, which now have turned into traditions but maybe started with the secret idea to cultivate an undaunted spirit among a generation of reconquista soldiers, conquistadors and tercios.
