spotty lyrics.
Billy Corgan is a colossal asshat.
Loveless exists.
That's it though, it's a great record.

I have no idea what you mean

I mean it's less popular now simply because it isn't current, but it was pretty huge at the time from what I understand (at least in America, as a Brit I don't think I've ever heard anyone utter the Smashing Pumpkins name outside of people who are specifically rock fans)

Also it's one of the most critically praised mainstream alt rock records of that era, and one of the few that even the most contrarian obscureshit bellends seem to agree on. Only criticism I ever really see is people who don't like Corgan's voice

Re-listened to this while studying for finals. Havent listened to it all the way through in years and it made me love it again. Definitely one of my favorite albums from childhood.

Because people are finally starting to realize how truly awful it is.

The vocals and lyrics are some of the worst I have ever heard on any album, ever. The sense of melodrama and overbearing cheesy angst is cringe-inducing. "Disarm you with a smile"... really? This sounds like the diary of a 14-year old who's mad at his stepdad. Combine it with the horribly cliche string section and that song becomes nearly unlistenable for me. On Hummer the guitar is supposed to sound powerful ad aggressive but it only comes off as a flaccid imitation of actual heavy bands.
"Today is the greatest day I've ever known," "Hipsters Unite," These are some of the worst lyrics ever recorded in rock music.

>spotty lyrics

eh yeah I guess - In certain places. "bang bang you're dead"

You never see teenagers wear SD t-shirts the way the wear nevermind/joy division

...

yes, some of the lyrics are dumbed down, but the vocal phrasing is always great.

I wouldn't use Disarm as a example of bad lyrics though

Detached youth here, a lot of my friends like The Smashing Pumpkins. Some more than Nirvana if they're into music.

billy corgan is transphobic and must go away like this cisscum he is
this doesn't represent OUR generation
go away grandpa

>You never see teenagers wear SD t-shirts the way the wear nevermind/joy division
This is more about marketing than anything, the Nirvana face/ Unknown Pleasures cover just make better t-shirts I guess. I mean most of the people wearing them won't know anything beyong Smells Like Teen Spirit/ Love Will Tear Us Apart

And yes, Nirvana was literally THE biggest alt rock band so of course they're remembered better. Doesn't mean the Pumpkins didn't make an impact.

Also got to consider the 'dead singer' factor. Corgan is only dead spiritually :^)

Nice meme Milo, Corgan is crazy even by normal standards

Soma is an excellent song with a really nice solo :)

need proof

if you're lgbt and enjoy smashing pumpkins music, i really recommend that you don't seek it out
i once liked them but i was literally shaking when i heard what billy corgan said
it almost ruined me

I don't think so

Is he? I had no idea. Billy seems like someone who would watch trap porn on the dl.

Does being transphobic change the sound of his music?

If your favourite artist came out as transphobic would you stop enjoying their music?

tumblrites leave

>Also got to consider the 'dead singer' factor. Corgan is only dead spiritually :^)

lol

That's because you're a fragile pussy millenial who is confused and taught to believe you're always a victim, no matter what.

>just take for my word for it and also dont research for yourself
ok there
>f your favourite artist came out as transphobic would you stop enjoying their music
depends on whether it showed up in the lyrics or not

so good. so good.

Mayo, luna too

It's not even that some lyrics are dumbed down. Attempting to listen to this album in capacity feels like suffering because of the ridiculously obnoxious lyrics. Combined with Corgan's whiny and nasally voice it really makes the entire album feel childish and immature.

"The killer in me is the killer in you / My love, I send this smile over to you"

Just reading that literally almost gets a physical reaction out of me, it is so so bad. "My love" as if it some old poetry. Gag. Combined with the horribly contrived string section and the melodrama is so ridiculous yet completely lacking in self -awareness. This album is definitive "my parents don't understand me" core.

don't say i didn't warn you:

TRIGGER WARNING

TRIGGER WARNING

Mayonaise remains one of the greatest songs ever written, I seriously still get goosebumps after all these years just thinking about that intro and the moment where the wall of geetarz comes in hnnnng

t. guy who thinks he's being genocided every time he sees an interracial couple

t. gender studies major who came from a shitty household.

this appears to be a joke article?

jesus god tumblr fags get out

somethingawful doesn't do offensive humor anymore, they understand that it's 2016 and such humor has no place in our society these days

Projecting much m8? If you feel threatened by some feminist with hurt feelings then it sounds like you're the pussy here

one of the links in the article is to legend of zelda furry cosplay

>hurt feelings
lmao

I JJUUUUSSTTT WAAAANT TOO BEEEEEEE MEEEEEEEMEE

>Billy Corgan is a colossal asshat.
He's actually one of the few musicians who's actually smart and not insufferable. He also has exquisite taste in sports.

Mellon collie is better

>somethingawful doesn't do offensive humor anymore, they understand that it's 2016 and such humor has no place in our society these days

uhhhh this wasn't that convincing. He called a trans person a fat pig. I don't see how that is an insult against all trans people.

>Corgan auditioned for the lead in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, but received the lesser role of Hedwig's penis.

therefore, he hates trans...?

Faggot detected

>One piece of shit being better than another piece of shit

Corgan can write pretty well but holy fuck his voice is terrible.

On a related note: If 'Tonight, Tonight' had a different singer it may be one of my favorite songs of all time.

>You never see teenagers wear SD t-shirts the way the wear nevermind/joy division

That just tells you the music itself is actually good

When people wear band shirts that means they think I'm liking the band makes them cool. Usually that goes along with the band itself thinking it's cool or deep or somehow meaningful

Whenever I see a band shirt it's an immediate red flag and their ranking drops for me relative to how popular said shirts are

agreed, and its great live

I wouldn't really use disarm as an example of bad lyrics. Maybe rocket "I will be bravex4"

Imagine having your tastes influenced as much by other people as this guys' are.

i doubt the guitar tone was anything but entirely intentional

i love this album but yeah corgans voice sucks, he still redeems himself by playing all the guitars himself which was also a bit of a dick move. I think it would be held more highly if SP hadnt gotten as associated with buttrock post grunge bands and ruined their discography with mediocre shit. Gish through adore were all pretty good

He's saying I will be free.

It is a little weird man. I wonder if he is like that about everything : I heard this restaurant is terrible, I better go try it bc it is prob amazing.

shall* be free.

that's right. nvm

Get off your high horses. Everyone judges music based on factors other than the music to a degree. I'm just being honest with myself. Why aren't you?

Furthermore, band shirts are simply an accurate tell. When you grow up and get enough life experience and can legally post on Sup Forums, you'll see what I mean. ;)

I think the main problem is that Billy Corgan is an intellectual and many of the posters on here feel threatened by that.

WANNA GO FOR A RIDE

>Says bands go down in his book when he sees people wearing t-shirts for them
>Accuses us of being underage

something's not quite adding up here...

pic related, it's what you're doing

/thread

creepy pedo vibey cover art and some shit lyrics

>something's not quite adding up here...
Well get back to studying my dude cause math only gets harder when you get to 9th grade

People see me on vacation and they expect me to be part of their vacation

I started this meme in roughly 2014 with a different picture. A screen cap of a smashing pumpkins documentary where he was driving a car I believe

Holy fuck dude, when do you quit?

We called you out for being a poser who only listens to obscure music because "le normies" and "le superior taste" but in reality is just super influenced in his opinion by randos.

If Joy Division goes down as a quality band for you because people wear the t-shirt then you have some serious problems as an appreciator of music my dude.

Why don't you stop with your flaccid "U-u-underage!" comments and actually take something from this and realize how fucking stupid you are acting.

Thank you. It is a good meme. Always gets a giggle out of me.

Wasn't this shit everywhere in the 90s?

>We called you out for being a poser who only listens to obscure music because "le normies" and "le superior taste" but in reality is just super influenced in his opinion by randos.

Never said this. Sounds like someone hasn't been reading up here...

You're both faggots

Shut the fuck up and get out of my thread.

i bet you're the same kind of person that thinks Nevermind's album cover is child pornography

And he would be correct

>You never see teenagers wear SD t-shirts the way the wear nevermind/joy division
That's because wearing a T-shirt with two little girls on it is really pedo-y. Nobody wears Nevermind shirts either for the same reason.

>tfw got two of my detached youth friends into Smashing Pumpkins

Feels great, man.

I dunno why. As a qualified superpedo I can tell you now that neither of those covers are remotely erotic. Would you find a picture of 2 fully clothed mediocre looking adults' heads and torsos erotic?

Because it's not the 90s anymore Dad

What's Loveless got to do with it?

He's referring to SD being directly influenced by Loveless.

Go to your room, son.

There's nothing even unusual or out of place about the lyrics you listed, I honestly wonder how you even listen to music without getting triggered. Also, if you think Hummer is supposed to sound powerful and aggressive you're missing the whole point of the song.

>A cross-dresser once entered The Smashing Pumpkins' tour bus and did all their coke, after being mistaken for bassist D'arcy Wretzky.

HEK

Am I the only one who actually likes Billy's voice? I think it fits the music, especially on this album.

Because the cover has attached youths.

I love it.

I think Billy Corgan's the greatest popular songwriter of the last 25 years

Gish [Caroline, 1991]

if you can dig art-rock fantasia--and hey, why not?--this has a nice witchy wail to it ("Rhinoceros") *

Lull [Caroline EP, 1991] :(

Siamese Dream [Virgin, 1993]

hooked on sonics ("Geek U.S.A.," "Today") ***

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness [Virgin, 1995]

*choice cuts* "1979"

Adore [Virgin, 1998] :(

Machine/The Machines of God [Virgin, 2000]

Galloping into the wasteland just in time to save the world from an onslaught of meaningless pop comes a genuine Rock Band caterwauling tunefully about Things That Matter: the death of God, the rain that falls on everyone, "a boy and a girl, simple yes but eternal always," and, most significant of all, hearing one's "favourite song" on the radio. Makes sense that at this moment in history Al Gore's spiritual megrims seem so much more fascinating than Billy Corgan's-Gore might actually affect our lives. But what can it mean that his vocal cadences are sexier? C+

Zeitgeist [Martha's Music/Reprise, 2007] *bomb*

Because you cannot reconnect a disconnected youth

DESU that whole Gen Xer alienation is pretty passe now. If a young artist of today gave an interview similar to some of the ones that Chris Cornell or Thurston Moore used to give, he'd probably be punched in the face.

Because it's 20 years old, alt rock isn't mainstream anymore, and there are no current prominent artists that have a 90s alt rock-esque sound.

queens of the stone age do if you stretch the idea of 90's alt rock a little

I wouldn't call them current or prominent unless you're decidedly already deep into hard rock and alt rock.

They were a big deal ten-ish years ago, but they're made up of 90s stoner rock veterans. They weren't quite fresh then.

Songs For The Deaf is 10/10.

When something becomes mainstream, it ceases to be alternative by definition.

>implying grunge was ever more than a marketing coup by the record industry and MTV

>Siamese Dream is grunge

maybe not a 10/10
I would score it high, but like clockwork is a bit better (admittedly they traded in some of their 90's musicality for 70's though)

NOT AN ARGUMENT

Thanks for trying to adjust my appraisal dipshit but I got it from here.

I'm so sorry that you're autistic and need everything spelt out for you in big lettering and lots of colors.
So check this. I was /disagreeing/ with you.

yeah he sold out pretty hard with that song no lie

lol rekt

How did he get that tinny clean guitar sound on the backing melody in the opening?

*sigh* I get it, Bob. You don't like mopey, angsty stadium AOR.

Ok

There's no getting around it, Billy Corgan is a douche.

He was kinda cute when he had hair though

Corgan is also based as fuck

its very popular, but also not their best record, despite Sup Forums contrarians, so mcis gets similar play. its also not 10/10, more like 8/10.
