The darting action begins to hot up with the last 16 of the World Matchplay taking place tonight and tomorrow. The biggest change for round 2 from last year is the reduction of the winning post: instead of 13 legs, it is now 11. This may have been due to the marathon second night last year when Mensur defeated Gando at 12:30am, which is no time to be playing darts.
Our action kicks off with first time second-rounder Robert Thornton taking on simple Dave Chisnall. Wee Rab had to fight past Josh Payne to finally break his curse (and not his wife's nose for once) while Chizzy edged it past Benito van de Pas. The pair's last TV meeting was infamous as the Scotsman went down 7-0 in the Premier League while averaging only 76.
Two complete opposites are next up with "interesting" Peter Wright against "boring" Ian White. Both players got past their younger opponents in Joe Cullen and Daryl Gurney with relative ease, with Midlife Crisis Man looking happier without Coco the Cow ordering him to make untoasted poached eggs.
The battle of the record-averaging baldies is third on with TV holder Michael van Gerwen (123.40) against PDC holder Kyle Anderson (134.84). Boulderhead pulled off the first upset of the tournament as he eliminated a petulant Vinny while the Green Machine completely dismantled a nonplussed Jabba. The Aussie has beaten MVG twice but only in best of 11 fixtures so this will probably be too much for him.
Then, the main event. After getting Uncle Barry's pants wet with the idea of darts boxing, the rematch between Adrian Lewis and Gerwyn Price is something to savour. The Welshman dumped the fat man out at this stage last year, but the Stokie's boast that Price is a bighead who won't win anything has sparked up some major #NEEDLE.
All matches must be won by 2 clear legs, with up to 5 extra legs played to decide a winner. If the match is tied after 5 extra legs, a final sudden death leg will be played.
