I personally think gen 4 had the best pokemon games. Everything that people loved in gen 5 was already done in gen 4 and I think it's not as overhyped as gen 5 is.

1st and 2nd gen were okay but 3rd gen is when it really started to shine. New Pokemon, new features, new story elements etc etc
My favorite is the second generation. While Gen 1 has the biggest nostalgia factor, the first games had some quite annoying bugs and lacked many comfort features (e.g. the ability to forget HM moves) and concepts (e.g. breeding) introduced by the second generation.
Of course the pokemon games evolved and the overall gameplay of the newest games always tops the earlier version, but Gen 2 introduced many important aspects and we even had the ability to revisit Kanto. The only thing i didn't like about Gen 2 is that it's way too easy to beat. The elite 4 sucked.

Crystal is the best of the first couple of gens since you could visit two whole regions. My favorite one if I were to move and live there, though, would be Platinum's Sinnoh. It's the coziest.

Gold or Crystal. The only things I take issue with are how much the TMs suck (elemental punches instead of Flamethrower, Ice Beam, and Thunderbolt? Get the fuck out of here!) and how inconvenient it is to get elemental stones. Yeah, Red/Blue had some shitty TMs, too, but my point stands.

The only ghost types in gen 1 was the gengar line, and the psychic type was overpowered in gen 1, with it's 2 weakness are bug and ghost. Bug's most powerful attack was Twineedle (25 base damage + 25 damage) and the strongest ghost type attack was lick (30 damage)

The only super effective type against psychic in gen 1 was bug. (Ghost counted as normally effective because of a bug.), and bug was worthless in gen 1 because it had pathetic moves and low attack and health stats.
It didn't help that Alakazam was one of the fastest pokémon in the game, and high speed increased critical chance.

Tbh Gen 2 is fantastic as far as pokemon and story is concerned, but Jesus fucking christ the color pallet is just awful. Looks like the only available colors were shit brown, barf green, and fuckin maroon.
That's because Erica's levels are in the upper 20s and Koga or Sabrina are in the low 40s (unless you're playing Yellow where Koga's Venomoth is lvl 50.) It is implied you are supposed to trash ALL of Team Rocket and fight everyone on the overworld before either gym. That's why most of Silph Co. is so easy (barring the rival fight which is something else entirely.)
