Finland remained independent after WW2, Estonia was absorbed into the Soviet Union.

If Estonia had been able to remain independent like Finland did, Estonia could be Nordic today. They'll forever be seen as Eastern European because of their communist past.

According to Wikipedia it has been controlled by other empires for most of history and didn't really think of itself as an independent nation until the mid 1800s. It gained independence in 1920, then got fucked in WW2.

Since they have basically no history of existing as an independent nation, it will be interesting to see if Russia tries to absorb them again.
