The craziest thing to me is that it globalized before the internet, and seems to have done so at internet rates. I always figured it was some edgelord shit but I never realized it was so big. There's something to be said for ease and repeatability, like swastikas/pyramids/etc across cultures, but you don't usually expect identical forms, just similar ones

Other origins I heard as a kid were that skaters used it to identify other skaters and having it on their boards or posted as graffiti was like a universal invite to all other skaters.
I haven't seem it since I was ~13 and I'm 20 now.
