Mr Robot is more of an addiction/down the rabbit hole story that the villain of the week thing that Dexter starts with. He knows hacking just well enough to know that it's going to get him killed but he can't stop. It also has David and Goliath elements in the way that a tiny force is trying to fight a monolithic group and even a little fight club in the philosophy and other ways.

It ends on a sour note though. I loved it right up until the last 3 or 4 episodes and then it just got too divorced from the reality it had started off with.
