>After having prepared for lift-off with his last film, Only God Forgives, Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn has left the planet with The Neon Demon, a stultifyingly vapid, ponderously paced allegorical critique of the modeling world whose seethingly jealous inhabitants can’t wait to literally chew each other up and spit each other out. As stylish looking as the fashion industry’s most expensive photo shoots, this languorous, vampiric send-up of a field very close to movies, in that both are based to a great degree on good looks, fashion and the latest hot thing, could become a guilty pleasure for jaded scenesters and specialized audiences looking for the latest outré offering. But the Amazon Studios release will mostly be received with yawns, walk-outs and/or derision, as it was at the first Cannes press screening, where it was far more lustily booed than any other film this year. hollywoodreporter.com/review/neon-demon-cannes-review-895905
>Sour milk and fresh meat is more or less what Refn has been serving cinema-goers for years. That his most celebrated film, 2011’s Drive, went on to become a serious commercial hit now seems like some kind of bizarre accident. His latest is another work of zero artistic compromise – a glittering, etherised nightmare, drenched in cold sweat, with a dark, coiled-panther energy that springs at you in fitful, snarling bursts. >It’s by far the most divisive film to have screened in competition at Cannes this year: before the end credits had even begun to roll, some audience members were already on their feet, yelling abuse at the screen. telegraph.co.uk/films/2016/05/19/the-neon-demon-is-a-depraved-deliciously-divisive-nightmare---re/

Meh, those fags don't like anything

Why are Cannes critics such arseholes? That kind of behaviour is just childish and wouldn't be allowed in any other profession
Connor Jenkins
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO >OP booed in Sup Forums
Owen Wright
Who the fuck boos anymore?
Show some fucking respect.
Anthony Garcia
Spoken like a true pleb.
Josiah Hill
What i believe went wrong in Cannes is what is generally wrong with many movie critics these days:political corectness.
While the average movie shown at Cannes is definitely of higher artistic value than your average blockbuster, it is met either with boos for being too daring, or by applause for just the same. Noone ever looks at the film in general as a cinematography masterpiece (that i am almost certain this will be) anymore, it's just critics trying to get people to decide whether politically incorrect films are good or not.
NWR is getting so many mixed reviews just because of this, when all things considered his only divisive film should've been Only God Forgives. Anything from Pusher to Drive is pure Kino imo
Henry Watson
>people at Cannes boo film >Must mean it's good!
Ah, the good ol' contrarian comes through.
Wyatt Thompson
They're picky so people will think their tastes are exceedingly refined and will therefore pay more attention to them.
Easton King
>Showing respect to plebs movies...
Hunter Baker
That's a misleadingly selective quote. He immediately qualified it: >(It’s only fair to report there was also a phalanx of applauders, of which I was one.)
Jace Robinson
This film may be a lot of things, but it's not exactly meant for the plebs.
>To reveal anything about their plans for Jesse would only spoil the significant pleasures of swooning and retching your way through them yourself, though it’s worth highlighting that a prolonged sequence of lesbian necrophilia ticks off that elusive final box on this year’s on-screen depravity Cannes bingo card.
It may or may not be any good, but capeshit this is not.
Joseph Harris
This. Wtf. Critics booing at a film festival? Who are these fucking children.
>Spectacular, gross and delicious (so unsavory it’s almost sweet), the film is more proof of Refn’s mastery of his trash aesthetic and more fun than anything this indulgent and empty-headed has any right to be. If he can ever find some meaning to attach all these glorious signifiers to, he might be on to something, but the wilfully surface, nasty camp of “The Neon Demon” will do just fine till that day comes. >2016 >making a "critique" of the fashion industry
That kind of thing became old hat after Zoolander and likely way before that even.
Sort of how it's hard to make a proper Bond movie after Austin Powers.
Luis Jackson
Cannes is an actual fucking jokes
They loved boyhood and boo'd only god forgives

I honestly really liked OGF and think I'll like this too. Film criticism is a complete joke in the modern age with YouTube faggots and unemployed dudes with Wordpress blogs, almost none of which schooled or having extensively studied film, having the final word on whether or not something is good.
Isaac Campbell
>dat amaranthine Refn nod at the end
Cameron Morales
hahah mate cinematography is not what makes a film good everything needs to come together well, thats the mark of good direction. Not if one thing stands out but if it all fits together. im steaming
Carter Adams
cause boyhood is an 'above your head' masterpiece. Linklater actually has valid insight on philosophy and life in general. Only god forgives is strangely paced, and is obviously going to be met with mixed response, to expect otherwise is to be deluded.
Tyler Rodriguez
Excellent lighting and beautiful backgrounds
I wish I worked there and was paid to watch movies

I don't really argue with your reasoning, but when i see that a film only has cinematography and a bad plot, i would shit on it for its plot, not the misogyny of it. I feel like this is what is happening here aswell.

why does refn's autism give him the confidence to do shit like this but mine keeps me locked in my mom's basement fapping to celebrities' feet

REFN FAGS BTFO >B-but muh Only God Forgives was a misunderstood masterpiece >Critics don't know good cinema! The complete critical and commercial failure of Neon Demon is going to be the most entertaining thing since BvS, all them delicious salty tears, all that rationalizing... Look at all that butthurt already and it doesn't even have a wide release yet!
Nolan Gutierrez
You're confusing butthurt with excitement.
Logan Sullivan
>The complete critical and commercial failure of Neon Demon is going to be the most entertaining thing since BvS
Pretty much every one of his movies is a critical and commercial failure - except for Drive. This is nothing new.
Julian Martinez
>stultifyingly Well kudos on sticking a big word in there, Hollywood reporter, but stultify is a transitive verb so fuck off with your shallow vocabulary.
Who gives a fuck about critics? I'm just glad that there are still filmmakers who create weird fucking shit without trying to appease the audience
Elijah Sanchez
The Pusher trilogy, Bronson, Vahalla Rising all received great to solid reviews (and have 'fresh' ratings on rt for whats it worth).

So basically the same criticism that American Psycho received?
Can't Cannes film critics can't understand why you might make a movie about a shallow industry shallow in its narrative?
Eli Flores
I only care about violence and Elle neck content
David Reyes

He's made the mistake of thinking that a verb which takes a direct object can make sense as an adverb.

Jace Cooper
It really doesn't, stultify, in that and its other forms, takes a direct object, and implies a cause and effect relationship through it
Why the fuck am i talking about grammar, nobody cares
Luis Torres
But it's modifying vapid
>vapid >how vapid?
stultifyingly
that is, it's so vapid that it will cause a stultifying effect
Landon Moore
no feminist articles yet?
Cameron Wilson
Never said whether I liked him or not, all I said was that it seems very obvious that the narrative is supposed to reflect the characters and their shallow motivations.
Reading American Psycho is somewhat unpleasant because it's shallow, but that doesn't stop it being good.
That works as vapidly stultifying, but not the other way around.
Hunter Myers
only god forgives is one of the greatest films of all time. rt pleb critics and their cult of personality are literal guttertrash
Dominic Peterson
>That works as vapidly stultifying, but not the other way around. But then vapid would modify stultify, in which case the gerund "stultifying" would just be boring, non-stimulating, etc.
You're right, why the fuck am I talking about grammar
Nathaniel Reyes
yeah because its not coherent with itself. there is such a good thing as a film with mind blowing camera work with shit substance. that is the true definition of pretentiousness. When you get to the high league of film-makers you realise that every film they make has had a lot of thought and time dedicated to it. honestly the only thing that matters is your personal reaction to it. I dunno im just spouting bollocks most likely
Jordan Nguyen
Why are critics at film festivals more rowdy than blacks?
Nicholas Gomez

Asher Lee
I suspect that somebody told this girl she had a nice neck at some point in life
Nolan Cooper
yes, how perceptive of you to notice I only posted one example. cannes critics are notorious for being a raunchous bunch of pricks
Daniel Peterson
Manet’s famous painting, “Olympia,” (1863) depicted a prostitute wearing a black ribbon around her neck. During this era, a ribbon around the neck could mean a woman was a prostitute.
Ballerinas used to wear chokers during their performances to show they were available after for other needs. Because they didn't make much, so they had to do a side job. You can see it in Degas' paintings.
Acting is now the most popular performing art for young girls, and actresses are the new ballerinas. The choker, however, is still used for the same purpose, especially by underage actresses being passed around Jewish elite in Hollywood.
Elle of course is trained as a ballerina, as you can see in multiple photoshoots or pics taken after her dance classes. In an interview with Elle magazine (ah!), the actress admitted that it's her secret dream to someday be a ballerina. The blonde starlet said: 'If this is a dream world where everything could become true - I’d want to be a ballerina.'
Her next project is the lead role in an animated film called 'Ballerina', which was bought at Cannes by Harvey Weinstein, the most powerful Jewish producer/sexual predator in the industry today.
