Ledger played the "angry teen angry with the world" relatable character whilst Leto played the "I am so insane that no normal person can fully understand me" which is why I prefer Leto's Joker.
Seriously the way he made those strange moaning sounds, the way he moved his body and spoke to people (in an autistic manner) is what makes him so much more interesting as an actual crazy psycho.
