Personally i'm around the N2 level, but you really don't have to know any Japanese to go on exchange, many people go with 0 language abilities and just study in English or study the basics.

Boy, I sure do envy you guys, exchange programs here are a pain in the ass to get.
it took me 2 years, i'm hoping to get the N1 by the 3 year mark, i'll do my best. i'm hoping an exchange year in Japan will not slow me down. it takes a lot of work, you need atleast an hour every day DESU. it's better to be consistent and learn everyday rather than take 10 hours one day and burn out, it's a time game.

Honestly, I think that mostly has to do with whether they left it at the annoyingly slow default walking speed or not.

Maybe if you only take school classes
very easy there's an exchange program here that you can apply for if you're at the University.
i'm also applying for the MEXT scholarship which will cover the entire year of exchange and basically make my year of living there free ( plus i pay my schools tuition fee instead and it's literally like 75k yen for 1 year.
