My weapons are usually those 'melee' ranged things but I usually carry a wide selection. Currently using just the possessed hatchet, daybreak and stardust dragon, but I was 'maining' a yoyo for a long time.

If your going more melee you should get beetle armor.
The sun spear and Influx waver should be enough.
For Accessories check for ones that increase damage and take Philosophers stone.

If not try getting one and setting up some small pools of honey.
You should also get potions and any other boosts.
