pros: i think it is for haxor fag???? try to look cool????
cons: it isn't windows

There is no OS out there that is just better or worse than the other. Do you need to learn linux for your career? Do you need to use common software? Whats your situation OP?

i'm just getting kinda bored of windows tbh

no, its unstable get fedora 24

pros: gnu/linux
cons: amazon botnet, get another distro or a variant of ubuntu without the botnet

Do you play games? If yes, then no. If no, then maybe.

Just dual boot then. Keep windows just in case, It is kinda handy to have once youve switched to linux. I do a lot of pc repair, and every once in a while I'll need to use windows for software or testing.

I suggest you get Linux Mint with the cinnamon desktop interface.

Alternatively you could go full autist and just install Gentoo

Noob to Linux, what is Gentoo?

Pros: it's cheap.

Cons: you get what you pay for.

Linux is fucking retarded. People only use it so they can look like neo hacking in the matrix. Kiss your keyboard shortcuts goodbye. The user interface is garbage.

I'd rather recommend Arch instead of Gentoo if user wants to learn a thing or two.

>user interface garbage
>literally tons of graphical environments to choose from and to tweak to your likings

troll harder, faggot

Get Windows™

Suicide for a newb, that's what.

Well yeah, but I can't make fun of Linux autists if I mention arch, because arch isn't a meme.

>Suicide for a newb, that's what.
Explain please?

Depends on what you play. High end graphics AAA shooters and the like, probably not. But because porting is so easy nowadays with the engines people use, especially indie games are usually available (a ton games on Steam are available.) The more popular AAA games usually tend to be well supported on wine (for example, WoW and EVE) if they aren't graphics hogs, too.
I'm more of an MMORPG/RPG player and I haven't used Windows at all in 5 years.

Linux mint (basocly the same, only easier) for 4 years. No windows since. Get it.

u cant game
no internetdownload manager
its unstable and if anything shitty happen u cant even recover files properly
if need to connect to mobile or tv install driver and all that sudo shit
better avoid it
window 7 /8 is the best thing in universe till date get one of them

>Kiss your keyboard shortcuts goodbye.
Lol what. Sure, if you pick some very special desktop environment (like a tiling window manager), it'll likely have different keyboard shortcuts. But the "normal" desktops like XFCE and KDE have very similar bindings to Windows, and not only that, in GNU/Linux, keybinds are usually completely customizable.

Linux Mint is an insecure hackjob by complete amateurs with no idea of security. Its practically a poor fork of an older version of Ubuntu with it's own desktop environment that needs to block security updates from time to time because they would break the system.

I grab the ubuntu mini 64 iso about 75 megs cli install follow the menus and use xfce minimal desktop, then install browser mediaplayer torrent steam etc,. all after performance seems pretty good, never had issues, i like xfce because i can fag it up with a windows orb and use dockbarx to pin apps and make it look window 7ish

>u cant game
you can. Just not all thatwindows has to offer
>no internetdownload manager
There is
>its unstable and if anything shitty happen u cant even recover files properly
I never had linux systems crash on me once whereas I had to reinstall windows many times. Theres disk check utility to fix coruptions
>if need to connect to mobile or tv install driver and all that sudo shit
You just plug in the hdmi or vga

That's why it's so popular, right? Such an amateur job... yeah...

OP here, I thought about installing Ubuntu on a virtual machine, but I heard its super laggy, can anyone confirm?

Get Linuxmint. It's based on Ubuntu, but has all the restricted bells and whistles preinstalled, like Flash, codecs, graphics/printer/scanner/... drivers and so on. I've yet to see a PC or notebook, that doesn't have 100% hardware support out of the box.

does your cpu support vt-x?

yeah

>install linux
>tweak it to look like windows
Faggot

Dude, I've been running Linux since kernel version 2.4 and Xfree86 for which I had to manually calculate modelines. Back then I ran Slackware.

After a few years I switched to Ubuntu just to try it out, worked great. Stayed there.

Then I gave Linuxmint a try, never looked back.

ESR (catb.org/~esr/), you know, the guy who started the whole Open Source (as oppsed to Free Software) movement, writer of fetchmail, gpsd, and a lot of other stuff almost everybody runs without even knowing, uses it too.

fucking console peasant

Explain

>popularity is relative to security

Kitkat is still the most common version of Android people are running IRL, use your brain

Ubuntu is shit. If you really want easy to set-up and use linux - get mint.

Just the fact something is popular alone doesn't make it good and certainly not secure (Windows is a prime example.)

You can start here:
techrepublic.com/article/why-the-linux-mint-hack-is-an-indicator-of-a-larger-problem/

OP, just try it out in a virtual machine or using a live boot disc/usb.

>Cons: you get what you pay for.

You're an idiot.
>cons: it isn't windows

That's not a con unless you play games on PC.

>Ubuntu is shit
Feel free to actually provide some reasonable arguing points that isn't just blatant fanboy preference cockgarbling

pros: complete control over the OS, not having to deal with windows bullshit

cons: won't be able to play most games, having to deal with linux bullshit

Linux is perfect for office or home office computers. If that's what you're looking for then go for it. Although personally, I'd suggest Kubuntu instead of Ubuntu. Unity is a fucking shitfest, so KDE all the way. Not that it makes much of a difference either way.

>amazon botnet

I will get a laptop soon and consider using Ubuntu or Debian for Office, programming and development.

Gaming on my regular desktop so thats not the problem.

Afaik most relevant development tools are available for linux as most of them are open source so I shouldn't have problems with that either.

In addition, updating software and working with web servers as i do, is so much easier on linux than on windows.

oh shit, wasnt aware of this

You're welcome.

One can use Ubuntu if he (or she) wants to, but I really recommend not using the main ISO image but to install the server edition and then desktop env of choice (not Unity).

Some distro's just do that. Xubuntu for Xfce, Kubuntu for KDE etc. I've used Xubuntu many times before in the past and I can really recommend it.

In the end, once you get more experienced with Linux, that is, the only thing Linux distro's really boils down to is its shit like systemd vs initd, apt vs yum plus availability of packages and how much shit you have fix manually when upgrading packages (looking at you, Arch).

>pic related

I myself use Windows on my desktop because I'm a PC gaming faggot.

the amazon controversy was blown waaaay out of proportion, you could easily choose to turn the feature off or to remove it completely using a patch, canonical fucked up by enabling it by default instead of making it an opt-in feature

To add to this, if you want to try Linux, just do it on Virtualbox on a Windows host (or OSX if you're an Apple faggot). Tweak the settings a bit and performance will be pretty good. Just don't try to install a KDE desktop and expect smooth results if your host box is shit to begin with.

I tried Linux many times in the past, and while I enjoyed it, I'm most productive on a Windows desktop while also retaining the ability to play vidya.

I do, however, use Linux tools and a proper bash shell on Windows, and use Linux on all my servers.

>canonical fucked up by enabling it by default instead of making it an opt-in feature
Exactly. It wasn't out of proportion, if it had been disabled by default, it wouldn't have been an issue.

I only keep windows around for some steam games linux wont play and a single borland delphi app i cant seem to work in wine, its a server but i cant seem to make it connectabloe through wine so its either a virtualbox or an embedded xp machine I got =\
anyone know how to access a server run inside wine? is there some portforwarding magic i didnt clue into ?

you're nothing but a FUD spreader, kys
(ubuntu gnome user here)

>unstable

Not sure if trolling or not, but I run linux servers 24/7/365 with no crashes and rarely have to reboot them for anything.

Thinking you're trolling since you like Windows 8 so much... That was the worst piece of shit ever.

if it had been disabled by default, canonical wouldn't have a good opportunity in selling its entire userbase to amazon

this is on top of the shit they pulled with unity. feeding people a buggy and nowadays bloated window manager

LMDE is better.

fedora is like the fedora of operating systems. edgy as fuck

mint is based on ubuntu...

unless you get the debian edition.

Use SSH to access the box until you read up about X11 forwarding.

After that go ditch the whole graphical interface and just use SSH because remote X11 sucks.

topkek. nice one user

fuck off stallman you fat cunt

>pro
It looks nice, i guess
/wg/ won't crucify you for using windows
>con
you look like a neckbeard trying to be anonymoose
muh games

>pro
It's fast, stable, secure and customizable
Unity is removable

>con
comes with Unity
it's not openSUSE

You can get the DE on any distro.

same here i reboot for kernel updates and major upgrades that require it otherwise system stays up forever. I am no profession linuxer so my uptime on a server is almost 2 years no reboot

anyone interest in sharing aliases or functions ? or zenity/yad/kdialog scripts? I am always on the look out for new stuff.

Just browse Github and Gist for homedir scripts (.bashrc, .bash_profile etc). Also tons of articles and tutorials on those.

Ubuntu is the Linux distro that gets tons of undue attention. Canonical has caused as much bullshit as they have good. If you want a better experience with things, try Mint or Antergos. Mint takes Ubuntu and takes it lots of the fuck ups. Antergos takes Arch Linux and makes it easy to use.

I play games all day on Linux. Educate yourself.

If you want to use something Arch related then just use Arch instead of Antergos. Unless you want to to learn nothing (just use Ubuntu then for the sake of 'using Linux') and get laughed at by the whole Arch community.

I'll probably learn how to use vanilla arch at some point, but sometimes I just get sick of living in the CLI. Also noobs will never get Arch installed if they think Ubuntu is a good life decision.

If you get sick of living in the CLI, you shouldn't be using Linux in the first place if you really want to learn a thing or two about it imo

Autism Test mailed to Stallman

Works perfect for me, never changing back. Not a heavy gamer.

Try Ubuntu before you install it:

ubuntu.com/download/desktop/try-ubuntu-before-you-install

I have Debian + xfce and never had any issues with it. Smooth, ultra fast and stable for years on my crappy desktop.

I been liking DeepinLinux the Controlpanel is amazing, the start menu and autostart control are retard proof its a bit fisher-price, and i would purge the default mediaplayers for better ones but otherwise pretty nice os, id swap their app store for the appgrid one though. It's all up on github so pretty sure its not full of chinese gov spying.

I specifically said I fag it up, and you feel the need to call me a faggot like i don't even know that LOL! Mind sharing a screenshot of how i should make my linux like yours since you are so awesome. Other than using a black screen no wallpaper and having the xfce bar with dockbarx to replicate windows i ahve no rice at all, no wallpaper or wall switcher, no widgets overlays or cpu sucking netsucking bull, I keep it pretty plain, but if you got something pretty and minimalistic i wouldn't mind trying something new. I have no interest in some linux aerosnap kde clone of windows vista or other useless window effects like making windows sparkle and explode when closing them, thats the really faggy stuff on linux =]

Everything's better than Mac OS though.

Download peppermint. The UI is much more usable and it is much more lightweight. Otherwise go with mint.

Pros;
Nice name
Circlejerk on Sup Forums

Cons;
Everything else.

+ Free
+ Open Source
+ Highly Customizeable
+ You look like a H4xX0r

* Many different Platforms, should get some easy one first like Mint

- Depending on the platform, it may be hard to get into
- Still much use of the terminal rather than GUIs
- Not as much Software Compatibility, might need to use programs like Wine to get some things running (Not recommendable for games)

Did I miss anything?

i currently have openbsd installed on a mac book pro using a fully encrypted hard drive. I'm not enjoying life because it is a mac and the video card doesn't work correctly.
