It's introspective and personal when done right, but preachy and annoying when done wrong

Can definitely be good.

One of the problems with hip hop is that it's not about highlighting your insecurities, just about bragging and basically pretending they don't exist. Of course that has its place but what that creates is something impervious to any kind of imperfections because no one can ever criticize it.

Excellent example: youtube.com/watch?v=Ee-uNg86JcE

If conscious means
>Ayo nigga god did 9/11 white girls fuck dogs bitch nigga fuck is up
it's shit

this for sure. if it's "conscious" about "issues" it's generally dull after a few listens, but a rapper talking himself through himself is a great thing to listen to

The first attempt was actually the best.

Generally sucks.

I remember back when electroclash was a thing, a lot of electro/house acts were making songs criticizing the Bush presidency.

I'm cool with politics, and I'm cool with dance music. Write your political thoughts in a blog, be thorough, and cite your sources. Make your dance music mindless and fun.

When you mix issues and dance music, you end up with shitty dance music and a piss-poor examination of the issues.

Rap is dance music, and it's no different.

People are talking about how self-exploration in rap is different and better. I agree. I like mopey emo rap just fine. I like Drake fine.

It depends on who's doing it.
If they generally always do conscious hip hop it works well.

But if they do shit where the conscious tracks are the singles:
youtube.com/watch?v=ea-ezolZq5k
youtube.com/watch?v=5iZasCzxIX8

And then shit like this...
youtube.com/watch?v=ASsKFpsxXTM
youtube.com/watch?v=kfcixQTLI0M

It can be a little weird.

Depends what you define as conscious
If it's self-reflection then I feel like it's one of if not the best course of hip hop
If it's philosophical done right and in a non obnoxious way then it's up there
If it's societal issues that isn't muh mike brown and #BLM then it's tolerable
If it's about conspiracies and the gubmint then it gets old quickly

Completely agree. And oftentimes when it's preachy it's especially annoying because they're...preaching to the choir. You're not telling us anything we didn't already know, but you're being pretentious about it.

>If it's philosophical done right and in a non obnoxious way then it's up there

So, Eyedea?

fpbP

most good hip hop is "conscious"

most conscious hip hop (as a genre, not an adjective) is shit

Why do you fuckers do this? Has there ever been a song anything like this that was done unironically? I bet you're a fucking dadrocker

His mom probably left his dad for a big dick nigga

Not him but there's a lot of dumb conspiracy theory rap, and I like lots of hip-hop

>this type of music can only do one thing over and over and never progress or even attempt to break the mold otherwise its shit
also hip hop started as dance music but its moved in many different directions

Haven't listened much to Eyedea but probably

Do yourself a favor

Fpbp, shut down this thread

There's a lot of great music in the genre but usually when a rapper is congratulating themself for being educated or enlightened they 1) don't actually know that much about politics/history 2) don't have anything interesting to say

It's a much better medium for an artist to express their own experience through a political lens (Public Enemy), not try to be the school house rock of oppression (ahem J Cole)
