Bump

What tf is Dune

I just read all of F. Herberts Dune. How bad are the sequels after Chapterhouse? The Wiki's pages made them look like fanfiction.

They kind of are.
Personally I lost interest after Messiah, but if you're super into the series though you should give them a try

You know I was so disapointed with Star Wars 7 when Finn just took a stroll over the desert planet to Reys village. But had he appeared at the village in a stillsuit with glowing blue eyes the theatre would have drowned in my jizz.

Dune is quite simply sci-fi's greatest epic
Give it a try

hi grimes-guy. it's been a while

I want a new Dune movie so badly!

Those are terrible. They are not even comparable to the original six novels of Frank Herbert.

You know...
The De Laurentio Version is pretty awesome and I don't see the other Books leading to great movies.
It's a damn shame that the series was produced cheaper than thrid grade dirt substitute.

Kwisach haderach checking in. All possible futures of this thread indicate that op is indeed a faggot.

Nah, the one we have is perfect. I wouldnt change a thing.

Frank is a God.
Brian can go fuck himself.
The little shit shat all over his father's legacy.

Though I could imagine a trilogie of the three first books.

They really aren't worth reading. His son is not him.

huge asimov, brussolo and stargate sg1 fan here.
would you recommend i watch the movies before i read the books or after?

Easy-read science/fantasy. Harmless and forgetable. Kinda enjoyable if you just want to read something meaningless while relaxing.

Ultimately, all thins are known because you want to believe you know.

Books first nigger

Always books first. Always.

read dune by frank herbert might clean up ur spiritual and sexual confusion OP

But they could totally remake it so Barron Harkonen can finally get that sweet boi puc

This topic seems so out of place for the place this board has become.

Are you retarded?

The book is great but does it have semi-naked young Sting lookin at the camera like he wants to fuck it?

I keked so hard the first time I saw that
"Oh... Feyd.. feyd......f..e..y..d"

Here you go.

Have you watched Jodorowsky's Dune?
Cool documentary. His version of the movie would've been so fucking amazing.

Well. It would be true to the books...

I imagined him as an obese black man. The movie was a disappointment on that part. I wanted to see come BBC sci-fi non-con

You know for all the bad things you could say about Vladimir... the guy knew his debauched hedonism. He could have schooled hedonismbot.
I guess there is a reason for the No-Sphere on Giedi Prime. Now thats a place for a pornstash.

thumbnail fail.

You know all the references to middle eastern culture and the jihad were a little awkwardly hitting close to home during my last read.
I guess we were due for next mixing of genes.

I'm on Sup Forums every day bro
Make a Dune thread and I'll be there.
Maybe we could Dune it uo in here and those fluffys and lolis will move elsewhere

I promised myself I would read the first book before I died. About 3/4 of the way through it. Wish I had died before I started it. So fucking bored.

Kys
And then leave my thread

"For he IS the Jizzrag Shackemup!"

Saw it. The cast and crew would have been off the charts in quality.

I have a fan edit called "Dune (1984) Alternative Edition Redux" which is the best rendition of the original movie.

Also, there has been talk of HBO doing a Dune series, which would finally make me get a subscription.

ZERO characterization. Guy can't write characters for shit. I don't care about world building, if I don't give a shit about the people in it. It's boring horseshit.

With a decent budget and a reasonable dedication to the source material this could be awesome. We could even get MacLAchlan as Leto I.

Thats great news about Dune hitting HBO!
Where would one find this fan made alternative version of Dune you speak of?
What are the major differences between it and the original Lynch film?

Frank Herbert is a genius
Brian Herbert is the devil
David Lynch is a weirdo
I preferred the 2000 miniseries myself

Seriously though, the Litany Against Fear still keeps me focused when I'm stressed, the book was literally genius.

I must not fear
fear is the mind killer
fear is the little death that brings total obliteration
I will face my fear
I will permit it pass over me and through me
And when the fear has gone by, I will turn my inner eye and see its path
where the fear has gone, there will be nothing
only I will remain
From memory. I wonder how close I remember it...

If the characters didn't speak to you, know that not everyone had the same experience.

I feel sorry for you, really, it's a shame when people can't appreciate wonderful things.

>Jodorowsky
Did you read any of his comics? He's a contributor to Heavy Metal magazine, which just relaunched with Grant Morrison (another of my favorite writers) as Editor in Chief.

Metabarons was pretty fucking awesome

The fact that he never made Dune is more tragic than 9/11

Meh. Maybe I'll finish the book then watch the movie. I like the premise.

Oh shit, ill have to check this out. Im a big fan of Grant Morrison. I didn't know he was the Editor in Chief for Heavy Metals relaunch.
>The fact that he never made Dune is more tragic than 9/11
Kek, I'd have to agree with this.

>pic related

Yeah, I had a subscription for a long time. When then they started releasing every other month I was getting worried and stopped my subscription; but with Grant at the steering wheel for the relaunch, I will give them all the money they ask.

In my opinion, Herbert needed a better editor. Dune is so focused on worldbuilding that it loses considerable potential as an engaging narrative.
This is most clearly seen in his insistence on not simply foreshadowing, but spelling out future events chapters in advance. By the end of the novel there no real twists or surprises, and thus little tension to keep the reader engaged.

Take the case of Doctor Yueh.
Book 1 of Dune (as in, section one of the first novel) is somewhere between one third and one half of the novel, detailing the arrival on Arrakis and the Atreidies losing to the Harkonens.
Almost from the beginning we are told, both in-narrative and through the pre-chapter blurbs from Arulan's books, that Yueh is the traitor.
Telling us this fact wastes considerable potential to develop tension and mystery. Worse still, we hear Yueh's thoughts, so we don't even get the chance to figure out his motivations.
Due to this, the early chapters of the book tend to drag as we wait for the boot to drop. Had Herbert not told us this fact, and had he not shown us Yueh's POV, the novel would have been slightly shorter and considerably more engaging.
1/2

Take the conversation between Yueh and Jessica, and the conversation between Jessica and Thufir. Both of these scenes are ruined by Yueh's input.
The Jessica/Yueh conversation would have been a minor moment without Yueh's side, but only when it occurs. Once his duplicity is revealed, the scene would have retroactively become incredibly revealing. We'd also get the benefit of trying to figure out how his wording allowed for him to conceal the truth without lying (much like trying to figure out how and why various robots go crazy in Asimov's I, Robot collection, now that I think about it).
This is largely my opinion, but I stand by it.
But the Thufir/Jessica conversation, in contrast, is actively ruined by the pre-emptive Yueh reveal. What could have been a tense standoff between two interesting, intelligent characters, either of whom could be the traitor, is instead a waste of time. We know they're both loyal, so why should we care? We can't get invested. And while logically we know this moment would have and should have played out in this manner, we can't help but feel these two supposedly intelligent characters are a little dumb for suspecting each other since so much of the novel has drilled YUEH IS THE TRAITOR into our brains.
And these are just two of many moments ruined by over-explanation and over-use of omniscient narration.

Herbert had three options in writing the book:
1) Be in everyone's head at all times (which he did)
2) Keep POVs limited, but writing a much longer story
3) Limit POV even more, and let the reader figure some shit out themselves.
I feel the novel would have been far stronger if he went with option 3.

I do like the book, however. It's just in desperate need of a fan edit.

this thread is water of life in the desert of Sup Forums

this this this

The books really pale against the original and I don't say that only as a fanboy. It's just flat throughout.

An example is Baron Harkonnen, in the Brian/Anderson novels he's just a psychopatic asshole. No depth, no nuance. The paint everything black/white.

A nice read on their own but really dissatisfiying

Inspired by Dune, but not directly related

Warhammer 40,000?

Pretty much this.
They're fun books on their own.
Sadly, they dont exist in a vacuum and up next to the originals, they dont even compare.

Technopriests is fucking awesome as well

Imagine a galactic religion based on demand for video games, torn apart by an Indie Developer revolution

Yeah
I really hope that someday soon they will make joderwoskis version

that too, obviously

But then, Warhammer 40K stole most their shit from Dune, so it's really all Frank Herbert's.

I watched it many years ago while on heroin. In hindsight heroin was a bad choice of drug since i nodded throughout the movie. I guess I should give the movie another shot.
David Lynch is very hit and miss though. The Elephant Man, Eraserhead, and Twin Peaks are all brilliant works of art. Wild at heart and Inland Empire, not so much.

>Jodorosky commenting on the modern gaming industry

Well Hyperion is pretty badass as well.

Raise you one.

called

40k is Dune meets Starship Troopers meets the 2000AD comics meets 80s hair metal.
At least that's how it started in 1st edition.

But that was 30 years ago. The game and setting are very different now.

They removed the hair metal.

...

Damn, never realized Starship Troopers was so fucking old. Dune does predate the 2000AD comics by about a decade though.

>Dune does predate the 2000AD comics by about a decade though
And?
I was just listing the sources the original 40k writers were stealing from.

kek'd

But now also reminded of the faggot artist who took those words and made it about women getting over domestic violence.

sand

Just that 2000AD probably stole a bit from Dune as well

...

Almost certainly.

So much memories coming up.

>Thats great news about Dune hitting HBO!

It's far from confirmed/committed, just a lot of people talking about it afaik.

>Where would one find this fan made alternative version of Dune you speak of?

fanedit.org is a great place to start. Hang out there. These are some serious film geeks.

>What are the major differences between it and the original Lynch film?

The fanedit is just about 3 hours long.

Here's the additions. There are also Alterations, Deletions, and Technical Fixes.

* Most scenes and footage unique to the Extended Edition have been used.

* The following Deleted Scenes from the DVD extras have been included:
- The Fremen Reverend Mother’s original opening to the film
- An extension of Fremen housekeeper Mapes testing Jessica
- Thufir and Leto discussing the Fremen’s prophecy about Paul
- An extension of Paul’s talk with Jessica after his waking dream
- The aftermath of Paul defeating Jamis in the knife fight
- The Fremen priest telling Paul he may be the fulfilment of their prophecy
- A shot of Jessica in labour with Alia
- A closeup shot of Fremen warriors shouting “long live the fighters!”
- Thufir Howat’s redemption and death
- Paul taking Princess Irulan as his wife.

* The film has been divided into four “Books”, each with a title frame preceded by a quote from various Dune novels. The original novel by Frank Herbert was divided into 3 books. This fanedit includes these and adds a 4th book to accommodate the structure of the film. The titles are: Book I: The Great Houses; Book II: Dune; Book III: Muad'dib; Book IV: The Prophet.

* Two new filmbooks have been created about the history of the universe, and are seen being read by Paul Atreides during the film. They have been built with material from the Extended Edition's prologue and are designed to match the look and feel of the existing filmbook that appears early in the movie.

>He's a contributor to Heavy Metal magazine

If his HM work was in the '80s or '90s I've probably read it.

I had this as a kid. Never painted it that cool.
It came with a few extension rings, so you could make the worm longer, but also you could play with it without the stand. It looked dumb tho, like a fat short snek.

nigga I love dune

Most of it was, the guy's nearly 90 but he still has a lot of recent stuff

His Borgia comics are all 2000's, for example.

I'll have to start tracking his stuff down. Especially anything he did with Manara.

>"His name is a killing word!"
>"What is his name?"
>"Fonkin Hoddypeak."

He published a lot of stuff with Humanoids, Inc., I think they're French, it's not always easy to find translated.

Good luck!

"What's in the box?"

"Pain."

He felt increased tingling in his hand, pressed his lips tightly together. How could this be a test? he wondered.

The tingling became an itch.

The old woman said; "You've heard of animals chewing off a leg to escape a trap?

There's an animal kind of trick. A human would remain in the trap, endure the pain, feigning death that he might kill the trapper and remove a threat to his kind."

The itch became the faintest burning.

"Why are you doing this?" he demanded.

"To determine if you're human. Be silent."

Paul clenched his left hand into a fist as the burning sensation increased in the other hand. It mounted slowly: heat upon heat upon heat . . . upon heat.

He felt the fingernails of his free hand biting the palm. He tried to flex the fingers of the burning hand, but couldn't move them.

"It burns," he whispered.

"Silence!"

Pain throbbed up his arm.

Sweat stood out on his forehead.

Every fiber cried out to withdraw the hand from that burning pit . . . but . . . the gom jabbar.

...

ENOUGH!

Geez I do the Litany Against Fear too, It's never failed me.

TV show was best, btw - but I am very open to a new version - it just has to be LONG enough to do the book justice. That's where's Lynch's version inevitably failed.

...that's pretty well-put, user. I think I agree.
