...David Bowie died.

No Plan is amazing.

I remember I had just finished listening to blackstar for maybe the third time when I hopped on Sup Forums. After about five minutes a thread appeared claiming he had died. Everyone then claimed it was a false alarm and went back to normal until Duncan confirmed it on twitter and everybody freaked out.

I don't think I'll ever forget that night, staring out my window into the night watching thousands of people post in Bowie threads. Sup Forums was basically 90% Bowie threads for a good 48 hours.

It was sad, but in a weird way it was very cathartic to see such an outpouring. I've been a fan for a while, and though I was aware of his fame and stature, his popularity always seemed like an abstract. I don't know anyone else in real life who particularly likes him. The hysteria his death created, and reading all of the thoughts and feelings of fellow posters created a great sense of community and togetherness inside, just for one night.

Love the guy. He'll always be my favorite musician. I'm so happy that he went out with such a bang. The most rock n' roll death of all time.

Very similar reaction to my own, although I cried a hell of a lot.

I listened to Blackstar again later that night and cried at I Can't Give Everything Away while staring off into the stars. It was intense. The next morning a cried a bit watching him perform Heathen (The Rays) live.

I couldn't bring myself to listen to Blackstar when I heard the news. It was a while before I could. I'd listened to it on Spotify multiple times in its entirety in the couple of days after it was released and already loved it, but just couldn't bring myself to play it once I realised the meaning behind it. I did rush to the record shop and buy it though, which was quite surreal because there was a queue of people in there who also looked like they had been crying that morning too. I live near where Bowie grew up so it was a particularly big deal here.

I distinctly remember that the first song I decided to blast through my speakers once I learned of his death was Lady Stardust. To this day I'm not sure why, I love the song but it's not even a top 10 Bowie song for me, nor was I listening to the Ziggy album heavily around that time. It just seemed right. I still think about that whenever I listen to Ziggy now and Lady Stardust comes on.

Was up the whole night before watching Bowie documentaries and interviews and stuff almost obsessively, went to bed, woke up the next morning and my phone told me the news. Was weird

I was in a shop and overheard it on the radio. Wasn't even a huge fan, had never delved into his stuff, but it still hit me, for some reason. It was weird.

Mine was similar. Never been a fan, only knew a handful of songs, but I was aware of his status and I was planning to get into him. Even though I wasn't a fan, when I woke up (about 20 mins after his death was proclaimed) and saw the news I was shook. I texted a friend whom I knew loved Bowie and practically grew up with his music, she told me she was in a lecture and she felt shattered.
I first encountered Bowie in 2006 or so when I was obsessed with Heroes, the series. I listened to the soundtrack and Bowie's Heroes was the last track. At the time I thought wtf is this shit but the song had imprinted itself on my mind and I could clearly hear it in my head when I read about his death, even though I've never listened to it again for 10 years.

I'd recommend this documentary.

so many plebs on mu. haven't even heard of bowie before 2016 lmao. mcfuckin kill yourselves jesus christ.

Don't fall off buddy.

Most fucking overrated artist of the 20th century Low and Heroes are the only interesting albums he's ever made. And he was heavily helped by Eno & Tony Visconti. A lot of his other 70's Works are adequate but the albums he released in the 80's, 90's, 00's, and 10's are absolute fucking trash.

Blackstar is just dull jazz rock with awful vocals.

haha epic dude!!

I don't like his pop albums and pop in general, but come on... Are you being a contrarian for the sake of being a contrarian?

>Station To Station is not worthwhile

I woke my parents up I the middle of the night to tell them Bowie died.
I hadn't even listened to him at that point actually.

Disagree with everything you said except for the last part. Blackstar really wasn't that good...

I mean, it's cool. It's sad. It's whatever. But, nah.

But fuck you man, even if you were just going by the guy's greatest hits during the 70s-80s, you're talking about one of the most significant contributors to modern music of our lifetime.

>station to station and ziggy fucking stardust not good
this is getting dangerously contrarian

I'm wondering if he planned to release No Plan (heh) a year after his death as just another part of this elaborate and heart-wrenching final show to the world.

When I first heard the news I was actually lurking Sup Forums and thought it was a joke or a meme.

Then just to be on the safe side I googled David Bowie and found out it wasn't a hoax.

you're an idiot
truly, an idiot

never say that opinion in real life to anyone. you will be laughed at. people will think you're a pretentious asshole -- also an idiot

idiot

Gee I wonder who could be behind this post?

It was sunday night, the day before Spring semester started. I had been on Sup Forums that evening, listened to Lazarus some time before that.

I got in to bed, and on a whim hopped onto Sup Forums on my phone, when I saw the first Bowie is dead threads. I immediately woke up and went to the computer. I couldnt believe it

He's been my favorite artist for almost five years (ironically enough) so it was pretty huge to me.
I wasn't on Sup Forums back then but I found out online. Strangely enough I had Heroes playing and the song Sense of Doubt was playing when I found out.
It hit me hard, I had been so excited for Blackstar and had listened to it on repeat for days at that point. It was weird though because while a lot thought it was too painful to listen to for awhile it was the only one I could listen to. I think the fact that he had made it this grand farewell album and gone out on the biggest high I've ever seen an artist go out on made dealing with his death that much easier to handle. It was so sad he died but goddamn, what an amazing exit.

It came out in November with the Lazarus soundtrack.

Made this shitty meme not even a day before his death. I was listening to his discography and Blackstar all week so it hit me pretty hard.

lmao i forgot about that meme

Is Aladdin Sane anyone else's favourite album? Time, Aladdin Sane, Drive-In Saturday and Lady Grinning Soul are amazing.

Also, is Cygnet Committee the most underrated track?

I was catfishing straight dudes because I was sleepy and wanted porn to fap myself into a sleep coma with when the rumors hit Sup Forums. Then the confirmation followed by a million Bowie threads and shared sadness.

>Is Aladdin Sane anyone else's favourite album?
It's fantastic but not quite my favourite. Nor is Ziggy but I prefer that to Aladdin Sane ever so slightly. Can see why it would be someone's favourite though.

>Also, is Cygnet Committee the most underrated track?
Definitely up there. The Width of a Circle, Right, The Secret Life of Arabia, Letter To Hermione and African Night Flight are other contenders for me.

...I fucking love this.

Shit hit me hard, I'm listening to Blackstar right now and it really brings back what I was feeling when I heard the news.

Young Americans is such a great album. I was listening to that album the day before he died. I watched Dogville which uses the title track and felt like listening to that album.
youtube.com/watch?v=KSHY1_ux8rs

I can listen to that song for hours and hours on repeat. Absolute perfection. What an album too.

Bowie's been my favorite artist since high school, Ziggy was huge for me when I was a teenager, and for whatever reason 2015 was a year where it just came back to me. I had never stopped listening to Bowie but in 2015 I listened to him more than I had in years, virtually every day I was listening to him, going through all the rarities and bootlegs I'd accumulated when I was in high school. By the time Blackstar came out I was more obsessed with Bowie than I had been as a teenager, and I went in with skepticism and preparedness seeing as I thought the hype around Next Day was bullshit and as much as I'd enjoyed the song Blackstar when the video got released, I was expecting little. I was blown away. I spent that night talking to my buddy about how I was listening to Blackstar on repeat and was finally excited about Bowie's career going forward, how it was his best album since Scary Monsters (still stand by that opinion).
When I found out he died I was up all night. I listened to "Heroes" (favorite album, of his or in general) and Station to Station and Ziggy and Blackstar and just cried. I don't cry often. Bowie was something else for me.

Bowie's music helped me get through parts of highschool I probably wouldn't have without it.
I hadn't bought Blackstar after it came out, but I remember the day it happened, it felt like something was really wrong when I heard the news. I got a ride and went to two stores before I went and bought blackstar which I listened to maybe 4-5 times before I went to bed.

It's still a great record and I have all my Bowie CD's to this day (The 2012 remaster of Ziggy is GOAT) but god do I miss that man. 70's Bowie made me a little more open with my sexuality and fuck the dumb tumblr cunt who tried to bring up Lorrie Maddox THE DAY HE FUCKING DIED WHEN HE CAN NO LONGER ANSWER AND JUST CALL HER ON THE PHONE. Fuck you cunt. She got a modeling career out of that sick little world she got herself into and got to write a book about her weird groupie life which you didn't even read.

I just... I miss him a lot guys, i really do.
If you find Bowie overrated I feel a little sorry for you honestly. I really do, and I wish you weren't so cynical for a guy who's mark on music will be left for generations.
Like it or not, Eno's experiments wouldn't have had as big a stage without Low.
Sexuality in music in general probably wouldn't be anywhere near as open as it is now either.

I feel you man. I still need to finish his discography, but I'm making my way through. I feel like I need to buy Outside just so I can see the liner notes.

Aladdin Sane is up there but not my favorite. Time is one of his best tracks, as are Watch That Man and Lady Grinning Soul. Honestly Watch That Man, Jean Genie, and Rebel Rebel are better Rolling Stones songs than most actual Rolling Stones songs.

Width of a Circle, Secret Life of Arabia, and African Night Flight are so fucking great.

If you haven't, see the Ziggy Stadust concert film. The mixing on it is perfect and it felt like my shitty TV Speakers were full blown amps seeing it from the DVD.
It's shot like shit and most of it is bowie in Red against the black, but that kind of elevates it, like found footage of some great event.
youtube.com/watch?v=fEWhOSmrj6Y

youtube.com/watch?v=ZPxLbMXGGBY

Seriously, see it.
Only complaint is Mick Ronson (Rest in Peace) jerks off with his guitar for like two solid minutes on one song.

(I'm )
>The 2012 remaster of Ziggy is GOAT
Right on brother
>little more open with my sexuality
Same. If it weren't for Bowie helping me get through my sexuality/gender conflicts I'm not sure I would have gotten through high school. I was very suicidal for a long time and I don't think I'd be as happy and healthy as I am now if it weren't for him.
>Lorrie Maddox
Lorrie was used by those people more than she was ever used by Bowie. She never tried to claim it was a negative thing, other people just wanted to attack Bowie. So many tumblr shitheads went on attack mode the day he died about how he was a racist, fascist pedophile. Pathetic.
>I feel you man. I still need to finish his discography, but I'm making my way through. I feel like I need to buy Outside just so I can see the liner notes.
There's a lot of low points, no pun intended, but goddamn the man barely ever rested. I need to get more physical copies of his stuff after the seventies.

Outside of my father, there is no man I admire more than David Bowie. I don't think I'll ever really get over it. It's crazy thinking, two days ago is the first time his birthday's passed that I was here and he wasn't.
I miss knowing he was just out there somewhere. It really did make the world a better place.

I can see why you would think that, I just feel like it's the least consistent of the three glam trilogy albums. The high moments are incredible though, it just kinda feels like the story ends at track 5-6 and tries to pick back up later, another issue Diamond Dogs has but I kind of like Diamond Dogs more, even if the songs aren't as good on a whole.

As good as The Prettiest Star and Let's Spend the Night together are, I can't help but feel like putting them on a record was a little lazy. How bad is Pin-ups btw?

What's your favorite Obscure Bowie fact you know?

Ooh baby I have. Love it.
I also love the Midnight Special but have never found it in really good quality.
Cracked Actor is great, too.

On that subject, how do you folks rank his films? For me, and I'm only including what I've seen:
1. The Man Who Fell to Earth
Old, weird sci-fi is really my bag so this would have been a favorite for me with or without Bowie but fuck I love him in this. He's so perfect.
2. Just a Gigolo
3. Labyrinth
4. The Prestige

Still need to see the rest of his filmography (not counting Zoolander, which I have seen but doesn't really count)

You show me yours and I'll show you mine

I need to see all of them.
Labyrinth was good, but overrated.
I haven't seen Man Who Fell to Earth but I need to.

He was in Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, which you forgot youtu.be/KjtKXVnSnJI?t=2m51s

Absolutely correct.

One of the few opinions that Scaruffi has right, too.

Blackstar is a meme and was propelled because he meme-died.

Brian Eno should get credit for "his" good output and the rest of his discography should be ridiculed and made fun of. He contributed absolutely nothing of importance to the history of rock music.

In fact, I will, from now on, class "Low" and "Heroes" as Brian Eno albums.

I bet you think the beatles contributed nothing to the lyrical evolution of rock music don't you?
Or the V/O?

Your opinions on music history are equivalent to a common bar skank,
Off with you, before you embarrass yourself...

Well this is more "obscure Bowie fact" for non-fans but I love the story of his eyes. Most casual Bowie fans are surprised by the fact that his eyes aren't different colors alone, but the fact that the guy who gave him the dilated pupil went on to design album covers for him is such a great ending to that story.

The story of how after recording Hunky Dory Mick Woodmansey complained that his drums on the album sounded like he was drumming on boxes of cornflakes and then when they started up for Ziggy they replaced his drumset with boxes of cornflakes. Also the fact that Trevor and Woody went on to release a Spiders from Mars album without Bowie that tanked.
I also love the story that's basically a conspiracy theory but I very much believe that Bowie, realizing he was stuck in an unfair contract, released the Berlin trilogy in part just to ensure he wouldn't make too much money until he stopped working with DeFries (hence giving all the royalties for Under Pressure to Queen) and then, right after the contract expired, he releases his most commercially successful album of his entire career several times over. If he really did that on purpose, it makes up for Never Let Me Down.

Pin-Ups isn't bad so much as it is entirely inessential. Sorrow is an amazing cover. Other than that it's just alright, kind of fun hearing him work with the Spiders even if the songs are just covers.

How do you guys feel about The Gouster? I personally think I might like it better than Young Americans, and I do like Young Americans.

Didn't forget, haven't seen it. Need to real bad.

>The Prestige
It's a shame it came out when he was as old as he was, Thin White Duke era Bowie would have been a dead ringer as Tesla.

I got a hyper obscure one for you.
Bowie, back when he was doing the Arts Lab (we are talking basically Space Oddity period here) was a huge fan of Comus. Yes, THAT Comus.
He used to watch them Cross legged while they performed at the arts lab, sometimes watching them rehearse. Iirc they were basically one of the only art projects he respected coming out of the Beckham Arts Lab (Which later became the lyrical inspiration for Cygnet Committee), and even had them open for him at the Purcell Room show and was going to have them on for more tour dates as an opener, but apparently they got a significantly better reception than him and he got huffy and dropped them on the tour for someone less interesting.

Sucks for Comus though as that was one of the few chances they had to start gaining a fanbase. They probably had a light influence on his lyrics, possibly the darker tone of Man Who Sold the World but that might also have been the philosophy books he was reading at the time.

ya rock is pretty cancerous indeed

I was never that into Bowie, but was a huge fan of the Seu Jorge renditions of his music. I remember going on Sup Forums the morning of his death. His music was playing on the main page. Seu Jorge went on a tour where he performed the Bowie songs he played for The Life Aquatic. I saw the show in LA; very touching tribute.

Agreed on Gouster, but I never was all that keen on Young Americans.

How about some unpopular Bowie opinions?

Mine: Heroes and Station to Station are better than Low

Well that is new for me. Gonna have to give Comus a more serious listen now, I guess.
I got into The Last Poets due to Bowie's recommendation. The dude apparently also liked To Pimp a Butterfly and Death Grips.

While Changes, Life on Mars?, Quicksand, Queen Bitch, Bewlay Brothers and even other songs are perfectly good, some great, Kooks and Fill Your Heart bring that album down so much I wouldn't even put it in top 5.

i stayed up all night playing chivalry on ps4 and heard about it in the early morning news lol

I didn't listen to Blackstar until his 1 year anniversary. (Bc I actually don't listen to Bowie)

Pat my head pls

Fuck off poser.

he sucked

>Bowie fan calls me a poser
ironic

Sorry, I have no respect for people who start listening to Bowie after he's dead. Just don't listen at all at this point.

Honestly, he was a race-mixing, sexual deviant.

I'm not sad that he's gone, and can honestly say that the only song of his is the Scala and Kolancy Brothers cover of "Heroes".

He also took it in the ass too and fucked Mick Jagger like a race horse. That's not exactly a new fact.

My band was maybe 10 days into a 16 day tour, in Kentucky and working our way back up to New York. We found out the morning after, and that night the bar played Bowie the whole night

Bowie would be proud to know the tasteless bigots still hate him

>bigots

Have fun with your safe politically correct opinions that challenge nothing.

Are you acting like racism and values from 20 years ago are challenging now?

I hope you get sued by his managers for playing his music
I don't know what a Scala and Kolancy is supposed to be but sounds like a skin disease that I hope you get cancer from and die
Videogames are for children
You should kill yourself for watching Wes Anderson flicks

Don't respond just ignore him and he'll kill himself eventually

>values from 20 years ago
nice bait

but seriously if you don't believe that "you can't be racist to whites" "and "gender is more of a social construct, really" you're a social pariah now

No, that's the cancer, but there's more than just two black and white stereotyped sides to this argument.

Also... the definitions of sex and gender are
sex: The biological characteristics that differentiate males and females.
Gender: The way we treat people based off what gender we see them to be.
Gender and Sex aren't the same thing.
This isn't weird pseudo psychiatric science, this is what you will learn in a community college sociology course.

Racism refers to a system of oppression, which does not negatively impact whites. You can be prejudiced against whites.
Gender is literally a social construct.

If you took the time to see why people disagree with you you'd see that the argument is facts versus your feelings. Find a safe space, lil fella.

>Racism refers to a system of oppression, which does not negatively impact whites
Now that is NOT what I was taught in school.
It seems not alright that a sociological concept can be one sided.

>Agreed on Gouster, but I never was all that keen on Young Americans.

Insane

>Mine: Heroes and Station to Station are better than Low

Agreed.

You are confusing the democratic party with clickbait websites...Entertainment designed to attract views from outrageous headlines.

what are you going to do about it, poser?

i had a stomach flu and was puking my guts out.

>that's not true because I was poorly educated
Well, that makes perfect sense, actually.

No, I took a damn sociology class. I'm the guy who replied to him first.
Explain this to me then why that's even remotely ethically okay.

Stop bringing this bullshit into a Bowie thread ffs. You're not welcome here. Discuss politics on another board.

THIS

People who bring this stuff up or just go "they suck" are only out to get people pissed off and don't really have a place in society.

Generally speaking, the chief use of the term "racism" in modern discourse refers to oppression, discrimination, and prejudice. As an institution, racism is a means of enforcing said oppression. Without institutional oppression, there is no racism. As whites have not been institutionally oppressed in America for being white, racism against whites is generally a myth created by non-oppressed whites to complain about being called out for racism.
Now, using the simplified definition of racism (wherein it means "not liking somebody because of their race") one could make an argument for racism against whites, but generally it only falls into the field of personal prejudices rather than institutional oppression or beliefs pushed by an institution.
While it's a matter of debate, my overall point was that sarcastically saying that as if it's an idiotic liberal idea rather than an educated and well-formed argument based in fact shows a complete ignorance to the people he was attacking.

Was listening to Lazarus at the time when my brother burst in my room and gave me the news. I was pretty broken up about it for a couple days, spent most of it drinking. It felt like I'd lost a good friend, in addition to an artist who I looked up to since adolescence.

It still feels weird that he's gone, he's been a big part of my life for over a decade now. I don't think I admire anyone more. The guy was charismatic, handsome, charming, witty, fucking hilarious, wildly creative, had one hell of a singing voice, and with all of that somehow managed to be humble about it. He's basically the gold standard of humanity, and there will never be another David Bowie.

I miss him.

...anyways Bowie is great look at him

He really was, now that I think of it. He was just good at everything but was always so humble about it. He really was the best.

>his definition for a word includes the word in question

That was LITERALLY what I was taught in class and yeah it's fucking weird.

Cathartic is definitely the right word for how it felt. I have a similar situation where some of my friends are able to appreciate him but still don't completely get him, and others just outright dislike his music, so it was very refreshing to see his artistry vindicated during the period immediately following the announcement.

There will never be anyone like him, but that's okay because we still have what he left behind. I was very worried that he would leave us without delivering a great record one last time, so I'm very thankful that he gave us Blackstar.

tfw no more Memewie threads

not who you're replying to but that's obviously a poor definition. You're on the right track though. Sex is physiological, gender is social, both have to do with the distinctions between male and female.

youtu.be/u4C3KqUS0tk
youtu.be/JlOnDuibya0
youtu.be/0ZbHI7eJgqI

Underrated

Except traditional gender norms have a basis in that physiology. And it does not follow that because gender is not purely physiological that individuals can choose how they "express" their gender. It is, after all, a social construction.

Not who you replied to.

hi every1 im new!!!!!!! *holds up spork* my name is davy but u can call me t3h St4rM4N oF d00m!!!!!!!! lol…as u can see im very random!!!! thats why i came here, 2 meet random ppl like me _… im 69 years old (im immature 4 my age tho!!) i like 2 watch twin peaks w/ my boyfreind (im bi if u dont like it deal w/it) its our favorite tv show!!! bcuz its SOOOO random!!!! hes random 2 of course but i want 2 meet more random ppl =) like they say the more the merrier!!!! lol…neways i hope 2 make alot of freinds here so give me lots of commentses!!!!
DOOOOOMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you know with all this gender shit, how much longer until people are just going to fucking disregard it and just go on what sex someone is? if gender can be fractured like this, then the whole endeavor is fucking pointless, lets just use sex.

Gender isn't fractured; it's plainly obvious what gender someone is at first glance. This whole controversy is over marginal human beings that cannot pass for the gender they aren't but want social sanction to be accepted as what they are clearly aren't. Sex and gender are inextricably linked already.

But if gender did fracture to that point you suggest, there would be no general social need for a distinction at all. It would only be an issue for those actually interested in breeding. But if you leave your bed room and head to let's say the mall or a college campus, or anywhere for that matter, it will be clear the immense utility gender has.

I read it first on Sup Forums, so naturally I didn't believe it. So I looked it up on Google and he actually died. I was pretty shocked, I just used December to go through his entire library in anticipation to Blackstar. I listened to a lot of separate Bowie tracks that day (normally I only listen albums), in particular from Hunky Dory, Blackstar, Heroes and Ziggy Stardust.
