The Bible describes hell in a couple of ways. One is gehenna, which was the dump outside the walls of Jerusalem where trash was burned.
The more common description is sheohl, the grave.
But the most accepted one by Biblical scholars is not any -place- in particular, but the -situation- of being completely cut off from God.
So when Jesus returns to take the believers to a New Earth, those left behind will be left in a world without God; Hell on earth.
At least that's how Christians view it, your mileage may vary with other religions.
