as for stories... this lovely vintage amputee lost her leg to cancer back in the 1950s.
nowadays, it's rare(ish) for them to amputate in bone cancer cases. they try to shrink it with chemo and then do limb-sparing surgery (replacing bones with titanium implants and the like). amputation only happens the cancer doesn't respond to chemo or there are other complications.
back then, it was pretty much bone cancer diagnosis, schedule the amputation.

on the topic of prosthetics, it's kinda expected that amputees have to use fancy prosthetics to be "normal". but even the highly motivated ones can have trouble with prosthetics.

it's especially difficult for above-knee amputees. some just decide they can get around more easily on crutches in the end.

some of the prosthetic technology is impressive and the benefits are obvious. i happen to prefer how amputees look without a prosthesis, but that's entirely their choice.
i just think it's a pity if some amputees feel pressure to wear them because of fear of looking disabled or being seen as not trying hard enough to master a prosthetic leg.
