Eh, honestly I think Season 4's finale is the highpoint of the series. When I tell my friends about it I just tell them to watch up to S4 and pretend the rest simply doesn't exist.
The problem is that Showtime wanted to make Dexter into a superhero, when the whole point of the show at the beginning was that he's a monster. Seasons 1-4 did a pretty great job of showing that no matter what good Dexter thought he was doing, he was a murderer and his actions were destroying the people around him. But after that I don't know, someone tripped acid and decided that Dexter was the new Batman, and now everything he did was good and righteous, and anyone who got in his way was stupid or evil, and no matter what the problem was it could always be solved with murder. Fucking travesty.
