Early or late, Waits?

Early or late, Waits?

I'm rather partial to the old drunk at the piano blues myself.

*holds up spork*

>favourite albums are Rain Dogs, Alice and Mule Variations
>also rather partial to the old drunk at the piano blues myself

uhh

none

They're both amazing, so I won't choose. Also what do you consider his last "early" work? Heartattack and Vine?

Most folks are gonna say later and maybe even write off his early work but that shit is beautiful. The Heart of Saturday Night is one of his best albums even.

Such an original opinion. Thank you for your amazing input!

I think H&V is a good cut off point for change yeah

>tfw he will die before you get to see him live

Not surprised at all, he's literally a combination of all those artists.

That sounds about right. Apparently Waits wasn't even really into Captain Beefheart until he was well into the 80s and making Rain Dogs.

frank sinatra pisses me the fuck off

what is he building in there?

>die before you get to see him live
2deep4me

Why?

>Exile On Main Street by the Rolling Stones
certified patrician

Because this board told him to

i wish i could pretend to be a homeless black man and get famous because white teens want to look 'interesting' with their taste

I'm surprised Dr John isn't on there

This is all I've heard from him. It's excellent. Not sure where it counts as

You're welcome.

absolutely correct

listened to waits for over a decade just to impress people, not because he's the best blues/jazz experimental artist of all time

piss off

that's what kicked off the sound he would perfect on Rain Dogs (my favorite of his), and has basically stuck with ever since. Fantastic album. Needless to say I'm partial to post-Swordfishtrombones era Waits. Favorites are Rain Dogs, Swordfish, and Bone Machine

This kind of mentality needs to die, here and everywhere else

this is my personal favorite Waits album
i usually split him into early, mid and late
id call this a mid era album for sure
i've been focusing on mule variations and onward lately which are all still great, alice is underrated and real gone is the one that really got me into Waits in the first place
bone machine and black rider both are 10/10s and his other best is an early one, nighthawks at the diner

>i've been focusing on mule variations

Feels a lot like Rain Dogs to me, which isn't a bad thing ofc. Half ballads, half Waits fucking around. Fantastic album.

Mule Variations is probably the go-to sad Tom Waits album. It is for me anyway.

This

of all the "fake hipster tastes" such as classical or jazz you pick tom waits?

I honestly found this to be Tom's best work since Mule Variations, why haven't I seen it talked about since like 2012?

yeah - early, mid, late makes a lot of sense. Feels very weird to call Swordfishtrombones "late" at this point.

all periods have their strengths, but mid is my favorite, then early, late last but Alice and Mule Variations are still great albums

neither because he's tryhard fedora shit

I've been binge drinking on a daily basis recently and he's been a fitting soundtrack

I think Real Gone is a bit better desu

Alice is obviously best since Mule Variations

Real Gone and Bone Machine are GOAT

This is my favourite album of his.

>2 Solo Monk by Thelonious Monk

I'm an innocent victim of a blinded alley

Somehow I think Tom Waits peaked at Small Change.

>No Neubauten
B-but he likes them!!!

For some reason his newer stuff just doesn't grab me. And by new, I mean like, Bone Machine on. Each of those albums has like a handful of songs I really, really like, but it's because they more resemble his old drunk piano man stuff than all the other wacky stuff he does. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating, it just doesn't grip me.

Like, on Rain Dogs, my favorite songs are Hang Down Your Head and Time.

Also the BEST song he's ever written is The Piano Has Been Drinking.

Sorry, meant Swordfishtrombones on, not Bone Machine

kek'd myself until i wet myself
