Just listen to Cowboy Bebop OST, Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Scenery, Karma, Kind of Blue and The Epic then pretend you're really into jazz

...

funk jazz -> hard bop -> free jazz

Kind of Blue is a cliche for a reason

Just listen to Coltrane and Davis.
That's enough for everyone outside this autistic board.

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers' album "Moanin'". High energy with killer contributions from the group/

Start with Miles Davis - Kind of Blue. Especially the opening track. That will make it click.

Then go onto Charles Mingus - Let My Children Hear Music. That will show you the heights it can reach.

Then check out Art Blakey - Moanin' to see how impassioned bebop can be. Then continue onto other people from his circle, like Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder and Wayne Shorter - Juju to get more of that sound.

To round out the Essentials, check out Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come, John Coltrane - A Love Supreme, The Dave Brubeck Band - Time Out, Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain, and anything by Django Reinhardt.

oh, also Pete La Roca - Basra

Great chart

Does Soil and Pimp Sessions count? youtube.com/watch?v=axzOcH9KhN0

Stay out off free jazz until you get into it, id personally star with either modal jazz like miles davis kind of blue or with big bands like benny goodman's and start from there.

Nips for some reason love this kind of upbeat hardbop style, Soil&Pimp Sessions, Kagero Zero, Hiromi Uehara, even Ryu Fukui that gets memed on constantly sounds a bit like this.

In my opinion Chet Baker doesn't get mentioned enough whenever this question comes up, the way he works vocals into his songs make a lot of his stuff very accessible for beginners highly recommend grey December as a starting point with him

Thank you for this.

How about some feel good Jazz ?

Fuck you and fuck Chet Baker.

great argument dude v/productive

Find a jazz venue near you and go. Usually tickets/cover are pretty cheap and you'll see really talented people. It's way easier to get the excitement and marvel at the musicianship of jazz when it's live.

Start with bitches brew, anthony fantano said it's the easiest for rock listeners
