Special Sup Forums FAQ: >What's the point of this thread? For learners of Japanese to come and ask questions and shitpost with other learners. Japanese people learning English can come too I guess. >Why is it here? The mods moved us here and won't let us go anywhere else. >Why not use the pre-existing Japanese thread? The cultures are completely different. >Go back to Sup Forums There's the door
This thread is a Japanese general, while the one on Sup Forums is for learning Japanese. Is that correct?
Thomas Thomas

Did the last thread die due to inactivity?

Yeah, I see. This one used to be on Sup Forums.

this thread is kill on mondays for some reason
David Morales
Sup Forums is shit anyway, I never understood why Sup Forums won't allow recommendation threads even though 90% of all anime are unwatchable garbage so instead of talking about anime that are actually good you have 10 waifu threads
Liam Gonzalez
Do Japanese produce series other than Drama and/or comedy? Are there any interesting detective, mystery, sf series out there?

Evan Walker
>chrome i dont use that, i wouldn't know
Jeremiah Brooks
Three years on the dot pretty much. >how much did you do on average on a daily basis? Not sure. Some days I did a lot and occasionally I didn't do anything at all. On average? Eh, maybe 2-3 hours a day. Honestly though I have no idea. I was only really consistent at the start when I did anki.
what did these 2-3 hours include? also just watching shows or reading stuff? or actual intense hours of workbook studies and vocabulary learning?
how many new vocabs do you learn per day?
I'm almost 1 year in and still can't read basic manga. I put in 30-60 minutes daily (+ watching shows and stuff ofc). but I'm afraid that won't lead me to fluency within the next 1-2 years.
Aaron Perry
There is a popular TV series that title name is 相棒.

What do you guys think of /jp/ DJT? Bunch of wankers right? Of no use to man nor beast I say.
Nathaniel Price
likely or doubtfully
Cooper Baker
>/jp/ hateful people and autistic screeching
Asher Torres
Thanks A mix of both. I did core10k starting out, at like 40 words a day. After I finished that I dropped Anki, somewhat involuntarily. Sometimes I wish I'd kept it up, as consistency really is the key, but it was a drag and focusing on other stuff was definitely beneficial in it's own way. I didn't read that much in comparison to some people here that've gone through tens of VN, but I did read somewhat varied stuff. Both manga, LN and VN, and "real books" as well. I didn't watch much stuff at all, as you can probably guess from my listening score, and didn't have a lot of exposure to anime coming in either. As for workbook stuff, I did the basic grammar study everyone does, and after that I referred to DOJG and google for things I didn't recognize or understand. Later on I worked through Sou Matome Grammar N2/N1 and even later on, in preparation for the JLPT, the Kanzen Master counter parts, all of which I can recommend. In all honesty, though, if you feel you're lagging behind the only advice I feel comfortable giving is: work more. And don't shy away from material you feel is difficult.
Robert Morales
thanks for your answer
I'm learning for almost 6 years in a few months, but I'm also very inconsistent and I'm doing maybe half of what you do I think I'm pretty sure that I could easily get N2 if I specifically prepare for the questions, but N1... probably not
I don't know about you but I'm always just learning how it's fun to me, so it's pretty inefficient most of the time

もうかってる is a conjugated form of もうかる means 'to have gained'.
Kayden Stewart
Oh, I thought is was もう and then かってる. Thanks a lot guys
>「カ why does this shit happen that the letters get really small when you want to quote in japanese yesterday I was trying to put something into quotes without this shit happening but it just didn't work... drove me nuts really
Luke Price
Why are you quoting me and adding seemingly irrelevant information to the discussion? Do you have a Patreon too?
Fix your font.
Nicholas Lee
thanks for answering! I'm also not too much into manga and anime anymore so I kind of force myself to watch the occasional show. wish I had started in my teens when I was still into that kind of stuff. I'm currently at 25 new cards per day because I can easily manage that on a daily basis. but if you managed it with 40 I might consider spending more time on my daily anki practice.
Evan Thomas
its literally "likely". its used in a similar usage to っぽい、みたい、らしい、 and such that 面倒くさいs くさい is just part of 面倒. its just an idiom.
死ぬくさい is Im likely gonna die. あいつはくさい has two meanings, one is "that guy is smelly", another one is "that guy is suspicious/doubtful/fishy"
your english and translation are fucked and more teigaku reki-sounding
tho i know thats what this thread is all about
Lucas Morales
>童貞くさい Smells like a virgin? Yea we have that expression in English as well
Jacob Reed
Do the math, 40 per day means 250 days, he then dropped Anki. You can keep studying 25 a day and you'll have it finished in 400 days, it's still in the 3 years scope thing. Consistency is king, as he said, don't burn yourself needlessly. You're better off keeping the amount lower but continuing to do it for longer.
Are you sure you know Japanese ETYMOLOGICALLY™? Here's a fun concept to read about: 共感覚, specially applied into grammar as a figure of speech.
Of course it means something "looks like" when applied to abstract things, but it comes from set expressions like 水臭い where the sense of smell is somewhat literal.
Matthew Foster
calm down what meaning is that?
Josiah Garcia
what do virgins smell like?
Jackson Fisher

oh you're right, thanks for pointing that out. 10k sounds like so much I didn't even consider it would be finishid within that time frame lol

Katakana is older than Hiragana in Japanese history.
I also think 去年のナツ is overuse, tho.
Sebastian Bailey
>Katakana is older than Hiragana in Japanese history. リアリ??シッテナカッタ!
I thought it was Kanji -> Ateji -> Hiragana -> Katakana Interesting.
Adrian Gomez
thats pain when you read something in already over-complicated japanese! can't you guys make anything little simpler, oh jesus! im butthurt.
Brody Wright
It is said Hiragana and Katakana were made from Kanji usually, but the origin of those are unknown actually. All are imagination. No one know the detail of that. > Belarus > rare
Jonathan Allen
sure, her tits aren't small though
I mean sure, I also like girls with small tits of course, but those girls are sexy more in a cute way, whereas girls with bigger tits are the type which you really want to stick your dick in
Samuel Mitchell
What is the difference between 通算 and 合計?
Jeremiah Jenkins
of course, that girl were a sample of a girl with big tits.
btw, who is she? she is good. I want to stick blahblah

合計 is a result of a calculation commonly. 通算 is a result of a calculation related to a time line.
ex.) Ichiro's batting average of 通算 is 40 percent.

screw the sprinkly shit on the left for these kanji, it makes it too hard for me to tell them apart
Grayson Cox
ever heard of kanji components? try google it.
Elijah Clark
you can easily remember 濃い because it literally looks like some concentrated fat/thick mass of a kanji
Bentley Ross
As a master of the kanjis I was able to get 2/3 of them.
Blake Barnes
I think the い at the end is what's confusing me.

The thing about Manga and anime (and possibly also vns and lns) is, there is a fuckton of variety and the demographics are very precisely targeted, so if you know where to look you should at least be able to find something you can enjoy as a "guilty pleasure"

My kana reading speed is shit (even though I know it well) and I'm thinking of doing karaoke. Any suggestions?
Oliver Sanders

Mason Garcia
Because if it did 50% of the board would be recommendation threads from casuals who watched Toonami when they were kids.
Daniel Davis
My hearing comprehension is pretty bad. I'm ashamed to ask but can anyone tell me what is said in the vocaroo? vocaroo.com/i/s1SQ82D0zZvt I'm able to make out the following: とても柔らかく暖かく ??? 美しさでございます。 Source is the Park Chan-wook movie The Handmaiden. It's a Korean movie but parts of it are in Japanese. Unfortunately, at times the actor's accents make it quite hard to understand or my hearing comprehension just fails me. There are a couple of other sentences that just elude me, this one is the first in chronological order (at least I think so).
Nathan Price
sorry I can't understand shit too, but I don't hear 美しさ at all and I'm not too sure about 柔らかく either
Zachary Gray
Anyone aware of an anki add-on, which I can implement in optimized core 2k/6k, that can parse or has already parsed kanji that are ~visually similar, e.g., 車, 重い, 動く, 働, 乗せる, 載せる... Once I learned those latter words, I *better* learned those words and their visually similar constituents after making contextual and visual associations among them. It's just tedious to parse on my behalf.
RTK and KanjiDamage sorta accomplish how I'd like to supplement my vocabulary studies, but I'd prefer to limit structured learning to Core and referring to TK/DOJG apart from reading/mining words...
Xavier Moore
Does anyone have a good resource that teaches kanji and 6k(or similar) at the same time? (Learning the kanji as they are needed)
Lucas Murphy
W-wanikani?
Robert Harris
Study radicals. Physical dictionaries are ordered by radicals, sometimes, too.
Bear in mind "similar kanji" is not really a good way to put it, since different people get attached to different details. For instance, in 's post, I find it unfathomable to mix the last one with the first two, since I make a differentiation between two and three sprinkly shits.
On the other hand, I have a really hard time with kanjis like 結桔始読続探婚話語, and I have a friend who doesn't at all, because he feels they're too different to overlap.
Christian Hughes
I was actually thinking about this yesterday. Most boards could have a "general" sauce/recommendation/stupid questions thread to contain these posts, but don't tell Sup Forums staff I said that. /wsr/ is uber trash.
