Kitten is a cute. CUTE!

Toxoplasmosis.

holy fuck

some sort of alice in wonderland thing

>being this in denial of your own sad, uneventful life that you fail to see the blatant central message of the film which is spewed at you the entire time

...

This. They explicitly state this in the first minutes of the movie.

The cat is his coolness/hipness, as in "hes a cool cat"

Everytime he loses the cat he ends up dealing with real serious regular life problems (pregnant qt, cold and wet failure in Chicago, he literally smashes his hip life when he considers going to Ohio to raise his kid). Whenever he gets the cat back back he regains his hipster integrity.

Obviously it's not the core message of the movie, but it's just another thing he can't do. Whatever the opposite of subtext is (just text?), in the film he just keeps losing the cat on top of everything else that goes wrong. The subtext is more open
