Yes but what if that number is above the amount needed to have a negative effect on an area? That number also must change based on what country they're coming from.

Personally I think we should be aiming for automation of more and more jobs. For that reason alone we shouldn't be taking in people that we will be able to replace in the next couple of years.

I think at the moment we're either not at the level needed to automate truly shit jobs, say, shelf stacking in a supermarket or cleaning, and businesses are still hung up on keeping people around. It's definitely a short-term kind of thinking, because eventually we will get there. The problems will happen when we do have the technology and it's a reasonable cost to implement but we still have hundreds of thousands of people that we just didn't need.

I know the last place I worked you could've cut the majority of warehouse staff and accounts staff. The only reason I can think why they didn't get rid of them is that people still don't trust machines or programs to do these kinds of things.

Soldiers is a tricky one. No one would invade the UK because we have nukes, but we'd lose the ability to trash ME countries or whatever. We could probably reduce it drastically to the point where we can hold NI or the Falklands. That could just be an enormous mistake but I don't think we'll be in any real wars too soon.

If people understand that there isn't low-skilled easy work to fall back on I think more will focus on good education, so more geniuses that way. Or we could just have more media students who knows.

I think it's more that immigrants to the US are basically forced to work for a living and interact in US social life (or at least they used to be) due to our nonexistent social welfare for the average person.

European countries could do something similar, but it would similarly hurt natives quality of life as social welfare has mitigated at least some of the effects of deindustrialization in said countries.
