If the timeline was changed because of Spock coming back and warning people...

If the timeline was changed because of Spock coming back and warning people, leading to Vulcan's destruction and all that, then presumably the whole future will be changed. Which means the events of First Contact won't happen, or if they do, will play out differently. Which means the past should be substantially different as well.

Basically what you're asking, is why this new timeline is still the way it "should be".
There are 3 possible answers to this:

1) If an alteration to the past occured, it doesn't need to "occur again" in order for it to be present. Until it's overwritten by a different time traveller, it is written in stone.

2)
>Pic related did it. Move along, nothing to see here.

3) You're asking about the logic of a reboot that features the following logic.
>Sun is going super nova because a terrorist group created a megabomb, and they used it, and now the sun will eat other suns and grow exponentially forever (no one has ever done this before or will do it again, despite the massive number of crazy and highly advanced civilisations out there)
>Spock sets out to throw a black hole into it
>He is about to make it, but he misses his window of saving Romulus.
>In this window of him failing a Romulan mining vessel finds out that the captain's family got wiped out
>Said romulan mining vessel gets in contact with a terrorist cell/and or as a freelancer finds a borg vessel
>Scavenges the borg vessel
>Retrofits their own mining vessel into a functioning warship above and beyond the way that the highly trained and scientifically adept crew of the Starship Voyager barely managed while having a decade to do it in an alternate timeline.
>Still in that very same brief window of time, the now super advanced borg enchanced battleship goes back the the super nova, and bitches at Spock
>Falls into a black hole, and terrorizes the past
>Meanwhile Nero hangs out with V'Ger in the past because why not

What is above is the official explanation of what the fuck was going on with Nero having near the power of V'Ger.

Is this a question worth asking?
Is this a reboot worth talking about?

It's canon so it needs to be explained properly.

The Star Wars Prequels and TFA are "Canon" too.
Doesn't mean they're worth the effort.

It depends on what the story needs.

As far as nuTrek goes, it is quite possible that the timeline will correct itself and TNG more or less still happens. The Borg are still gonna attack the Federation.

could be used as justification for any prime universe canon contradictions arising in the new series but beyond that who cares

Apparently Nicholas Meyer is on board for the 2017 show. Does this make you more optimistic at all?

Well, the first new movie was just okay and the second one was bad. Kind of curious if the original universe is gone forever, if we're getting parallel timelines, or if we're going to have some DC Rebirth style situation where the old universe starts to reassert itself and the two merge.

I don't want to be one to judge a show based on a 1 minute teaser, but so far:
>Space doesn't look like Star Trek space
>Music doesn't sound like Star Trek music
>Tagline promises "New Villains" and "New Heroes", which should never be the selling point of Star Trek

There's a good chance CBS is just trying to rile people up, and the show will be decent, and true to the spirit of the originals, but if it's like what the teaser promised?
Yeah no.

Was meant for >Parallel timelines
They could've very easily done the reboots in the Mirror Universe without much time travel nonsense, so maybe.

>Space doesn't look like Star Trek space
I'm okay with space getting a visual upgrade.
>Music doesn't sound like Star Trek music
No way of knowing if they just found some music to use or if it's actually meant to be the main theme.
>Tagline promises "New Villains" and "New Heroes", which should never be the selling point of Star Trek
Might be an intentional response to complaints about the second movie being a shitty Wrath of Khan, as well as a desire to distance itself from Abrams' movies in general and show us that Trek can still be Trek. Plus, I actually am pretty excited to see a whole new crew. But then, I prefer TOS over any other Star Trek, so if the show is how I like it, a lot of other fans may not like it as much.

tl:dr
parallel timelines, the prime universe wasn't overwritten think parrallels from TNG

Actually it says "new Crews", plural, so there's a chance that it actually won't be about one specific ship, but possibly a fleet. (It could also just mean a new time period, or location where we meet other crews temporarily, but just pointing it out.)

As for the visuals getting an upgrade:
That's my issue, it feels less like a visual upgrade and more like something out of a game, or a Doctor Who opening. Way too vibrant and almost cartoony.
Actually the first thing that popped into my head watching this (especially with the blown up planet whizzing by) was the opening to Toy Story 2.

Well fuck. Apparently I didn't press C hard enough, and pasted the thing I sent to someone else buddy's having net problems
This should be the right one.

I thought that trailer was just meant to introduce the logo, and tantalize with a bit of information. Are you saying that's footage? Like they're using the actual effects that will be in the show?

First and third guy here:
As I said, I don't want to be one to judge a show on a 1 minute teaser, partially because you might be right, and it could just be CBS throwing something together, with 0 bearing on what the show will be like.

I'm just saying that if it's more than that, I'm not optimistic.

According to Bob Orci, Kirk didn't travel through time back to the 1980s so as to rescue some whales.

According to Bob Orci, Kirk traveled to a parallel universe where Earth was still stuck in the 1980s so as to rescue some whales.

He's an idiot, and if you listen to him, so are you.

That's not quite what he said. He said that by traveling back in time, he CREATED an alternate universe.

His shit doesn't work though because we see in Star Trek that changing the past will affect the present/future, and that anyone protected by time waves or chroniton fields will watch as the universe changes itself around them.

e.g.
>McCoy saves Edith Keeler
>the Enterprise ceases to exist
>Kirk kills Edith Keeler
>the Enterprise pops back into existence

>Sisko prevents the spread of socialism in America
>the Federation ceases to exist
>Sisko restores the spread of socialism in America
>the Federation pops back into existence

>Janeway blows up the Earth
>the solar system ceases to exist
>Tom Paris meets Sarah Silverman
>the solar system pops back into existence

That doesn't work if time travel means separate universes.

Star Trek BTFO so hard that there's no longer any point to having Star Trek threads.

Well it is a garbage series for garbage people.

The only thing that (kind of) comes close is the Voyager Fury present timeline continuing after Kes goes back in time, but that could just be Voyager being Voyager
