One thing that I always found intriguing and baffling is how explosions seem to absorb all light around them. Can anyone explain why?

Debris in sky if explosion is large enough or light sensors in your eyes and in most cameras being dulled by the brightness of the explosion

It's because of the cameras. Basically, the explosion is VERY bright. The camera has to compensate for this and turn the sensitivity way down to still be able to show everything. What you're left with, is everything that isn't the explosion being dark as fuck.
