Can someone explain to me why 1-(-2)=3

Can someone explain to me why 1-(-2)=3

I just... don't get it. Thanks in advance.

double minus = positive

Taking a negative away from a positive is adding

Are you fucking kidding me?

Perfect explanation for OP's little hamster brain.

Because the distance between the locations of digits on the number line is 3 units (zero doesnt 'carry the same weight', as a 'point').

No, no, no - think about this in the terms of an RPG. Receiving a buff (adding a positive) improves a stat, while losing a buff (subtracting a positive) diminishes a stat.

Thus, receiving a debuff (adding a negative) diminishes a stat while losing a debuff (subtracting a negative) improves that stat. Hopefully that roughly explains the theory of negative numbers and whatnot.

Positive and negative are merely concepts and are very much interchangeable depending on the operations performed on them. Two negatives make a positive and it works out very well for mathematics, which is based on abstractions.

Because the minus sign and the negative dash combine to make a plus sign.

this is the only useful explanation.

what anime is that?

What anime is that?

Tried to keep it simple.

ghost in the shell. dont watch the 2.0 version

If you add -2 to 1 you get -1, thus 1-(-2)=3

WhatvI don't get is, why that dudes head exploded.

1 - (-2) = 3
negative + negative = positive
- + - = +
1 + 2 = 3

Because he got shot by some rad-ass future bullets.

OP here. Thanks for your replys.

5-(-5)=10
2-(-2)=4
100-(-100)=200

but 1-(-2)=3

Visualize it in terms of motion. Just simple left and right movement. It'll make more sense.

That seems unnecessary.

"Hey Gregg! Check out this bullet that makes peoples head explode!"

"Why did you make it?"

"Dude, exploding heads!"

"I can see that but why do you need to make someones head explode?"

"Dude. EXPLODING HEADS"
