Hey Sup Forums, need some help. So my computer got a redirect virus, sometimes when I click something (like a picture here for example) it'll open a new tab with some "download now!" or "free promotion from microsoft" bullshit. I've ran Malwarebytes and any other antivirus I can think of, and nothing seem's to have picked it up and removed it. Any ideas?

Have you tried checking your hosts file?

No I haven't actually. What exactly am I looking for in there?

Tried installing gentoo?

Try spybot? it's good at killing adware.

Refresh your browsers cashe

"The computer file hosts is an operating system file that maps hostnames to IP addresses. It is a plain text file" (Wikipedia).

You are literally looking for something that redirects you. It is possible for a program or user to use the file to direct someone if they were to input say www.google.com and take them to www.shitfuckingwebsite.co.uk

The hosts file can be found in %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

It is a file without an extension but you can open it with notepad.

Also, have you tried adwcleaner?

Can't find anything that looks dodgy in the host file. Will try both of these programs.

Also, what browser extensions are you running?

...

sauce?

Proxy Paige my dude

Nevermind about that, then.

try hitman pro

Ill try Spybot and Adwcleaner, see how that goes. If not, I'll just reinstall windows.

ma nigga

does it happen on all web browsers or just one?
if it just happens on google chrome, or something, uninstall the browser, and reinstall

run Rkill first then mbam then back up password stored on browser.

fully reset browser. this will fix the redirect shit

Reinstall windows? Do you mean literally pressing the reset button in settings?

Or are you a sensible person and running Windows 7?

What do you use your computer for anyway?

Finally, a thread where everyone uses the same tools that I use.
