what's the trick the figuring out they key of a song?
just hit random notes and hear which one works then explore around that and find which shape is working, then you'll know what key it is
Check the sheet music
Slide your finger up and down in a 12 fret range until you find the note that sounds good over most of the chords, then try a major third and a minor third above that note. If the major third sounds like shit, your song is probably in that note minor. If the minor third sounds like shit, your song is probably in that note major.
And by "that note" I mean, the first note you found by sliding your finger around.
