slow af

NO ONE PICK UP THE PHONE. IMA CHECK MY EMAIL.

fucking rad

auto redial ftw

and btw, don't forget to turn off call waiting when dialing.

Slow as fuck. Google America Online. It was shit.

Mostly text, basic html only, microscopic pics.
And very costly.

>America Online
>AOL
>lol aol user

Ha, what an idiot
>not having 2 lines
>one for phone
>one for internet

"user!! GET OFF THE INTERNET I'M TRYING TO USE THE PHONE!!"

Sound of my childhood. I remember my internet deal charging at 2p a minute (Britfag) except after 6pm and weekends. Coming home from school and being told I had to wait to use the internet because I had been running up our phonebill, good times.

50 free hours!

OK! Lemme just dial long distance for 50 hours!

Did and I was grounded the next month when the bill came. woops.

I had access to a t1 or t3 connection, so 800k up and down

So, pretty good

And less censorship

One of the guys at college did his thesis on writing a web page, I shit you not

youtube.com/watch?v=p8XKhCfsTts

ok

800k

I think mine was around 40k, are you some sort of wizard?

28k modem. yeah, it sucked.

when i finally got a 56k modem, i would download music from kazaa

basically you'd find the song you wanted, click on it...come back 2 or 3 hours later and you were lucky if it was fully downloaded

expensive and slow.
useless, brightly colored, with flickering gifs everywhere.

come sit by the campfire young faggot

let the elders share with you the story of the before time

before high-speed internet access, dedicated phone lines to internet, and before NetZero, even Juno and AOL

I had an Internet guide book from 1993 that had two pages on the web - it called it a promising new technology to keep your eye on. Basically the book was a directory of gopher sites and shit like that.

niggers, when I started, my desktop had a built in 2400 baud modem.
9600 was the newest on the market at that time.

>hamster dance

email was
>FWD: FWD: FWD: FWD: FWD: CHECK THIS OUT!

I used my 9600 baud modem to dial into a local BBS for some Usurper or Legend of the Red Dragon.

It was a lot more exciting....maybe to me at least because I was just a kid...but you didn't have unlimited access to content so you actually appreciated it. Not as many normies. Less regulation, I remember stumbling across CP and stuff on the normal web regularly.

Also downloading music off Kazaa at 4kbps. Dial up was rough.

DEE DA DEE DO DO DO DOW DO
DEE DA DEE DO DO DO DOO

Parents had to be gone for at least two hours to look at porn due to load times. Load times.

Patched into the backbone, I was in the computing department.

I used to download CDs in one hour. Had the best PlayStation pirate archive ever

I tell you what my boy, you appreciate each porn image a lot more when they take a few minutes each to download from usenet and uudecode.

My mom caught me downloading uuencoded porn from newsgroups through gopher. I'm still kind of proud of figuring out how to do it. You kids have it so easy with your youporns and redtubes.

>tfw when the 90's in a first world country = your 00's

>alt.binaries.porn.erotica.teens.nonude.norules

yeah man

was early 2000s, but my parents made me use AOL red. It was like a kid version of the internet

...

instead of youtube we had powerpoint sent by mail

Uudecode

Kek, I'd forgotten about that

What about the Cindy Crawford clock, downloading that for 40 mins via Kermit on a Mac?

Anyone remember this?

My dad still uses it. My uncle is even worse. He's had the same webtv since 98. the shit cant even load facebook

>FWD: FWD: FWD: FWD: FWD: CHECK THIS OUT!

>sit down at a bro's logged in session for a second while he's away
>launch trn without thinking about it, cycle through his subscriptions
>alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.thigh-highs
dude

i played mmos at 56kbps

fucking dancing baby
fucking allie mcbeal
god damn it

here's a picture.
also they had it so that my history would be sent to my older brother's email

>slow
>Altavista was the shit to use, fuck yahoo
>Floopy disks
>waiting minutes too see 2 nude pics load

hahaha.
i used to spend hours going through those threads. Then my ISP limited the amount and newsgroups and certain ones, so being crafty, I found other newsservers I could subscribe to and got some newsgroups I never heard of before that were active. But most were illegal though.

Why?

Would you have preferred alt.binaries.erotica.faggots?

Alta vista was my go to.
Then yahoo, because
>my.yahoo.com
and could customize it with news and shit.
Then, google happened.

FUCKING WAITING 3 MINUTES FOR A SINGLE HENTAI IMAGE TO DOWNLOAD AT 26KBPS SO YOU COULD THROW IT ONTO AN IOMEGA ZIP DISK 100 AND HIDE THAT IN A HOLLOWED OUT SNES CASE SO YOUR DAD DOES NOT FIND IT AND BEAT YOUR ASS WITH A BELT BECAUSE THAT SHIT WAS OK IN THE 90's.

FUCKING 90's ROCKED CUNTS!

I have another story for that one

>Other bro says he wants to show me some thread
>Calls me over to his desk
>launches trn again
>cycling through subs
>porn
>porn
>alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.male
>porn
>Wait what
That was awkward.

In the days before Sup Forums pedos seemed much less common.

Whatever happened to gopher? I haven't heard that mentioned in so long, I had forgotten about it.

>News groups that weren't just spam and porn
>You had to assemble hi-res images from multiple parts (very hitt and miss)
>If you could watch vidya, you were a god
>Microsoft trying to convince everyone to do video conferencing when nobody could actually do it because no bandwidth, shitty cams, and massive prices.

like surfing the tor network without the porn

Ah yeah alternative news servers - had to do that for some of the pirating binary ones as well.

ohh i remember the parts.
I had to use some program to automatically put them together once I downloaded each one, can't remember the name of it though.

Napster/Kazaa were the fucking days.

liar, web tv went out in 2013

Netscape was the Firefox of it's day.
Then Netscape Communicator that had the browser, email, and web page editor built in.

Being 13 and typing in "13 YO" in Kazaa.

There was no Wikipedia so you would buy MS Encarta every few years for school projects . Shit was sad

Well, it lost to HTTP. I'm sure there are still a few sites out there.

>being 13
you mean being 23 lol

Yep, fixed someone's pc

>Pics of him and girlfriend
>Gay porn (big black dudes)
>Scan of passport and bank card (,front and back)

He's a lucky son of a bitch, it was me

imagine playing online games with 250-400 ping

aol chatrooms were fun tho

mirc and #xxxpasswords

University of Minnesota still has it

there wasn't a computer repair shop around that didn't snoop around on someone's hdd when it was in their shop.
it was always in the news that people with cp saved got busted because they saved all their shit (and viruses) then took it into the shop.

I'm pretty sure that's where it came from, so that figures.

ohh those porn site password lists :3

internet not free unless its the weekend

cant use internet while someone's on phone

took 2 hours just to load a webpage

tl;dr cancer

Dial up access, text only. I paid $20 for 20 hours a month for access. This was way before AOL. Days of Compuserve.

Porn was only on newsgroups, it took minutes to download one JPG.

Chat was on IRC.

It was good though. Better that fewer people could get on it. When every idiot in the world got access, then it went to shit.

Late nintento era .sega.very low res "v.r."headset. Super nes. V.r. boy. Tons of street fighter 2s. Mortal kombat.ecco the dolphin.sega 32 x sega cd.nerf bow and arrow. Bullshit. When 56k was in its prime a regular song took about 20 minutes to download at around 5 kb/s.

youtube.com/watch?v=6iCPIUGnHQ8

More the fact that explorer cached EVERYTHING

Remember using cc cleaner for the first time and freeing up 2/3 red of my hdd

compuserve was only 2-3 years before aol

plus, i remember bulletin board services

Found the teenager.

youtube.com/watch?v=S-YuS_LFQ5s

Yeah, but it was still years before it.

BBS were great, lots of fun games to play against people on there.

I'm chiming in with it took 2 hours to download a song from kazaa. 'Member Morpheus?

Late 90s. I remember 'cam sites" which was nothing more than people with a blog and maybe a cam frame snapshot every 1 minute or so.
Some of the fancier sites used java and would transition between one frame and the next to make it look like it moved lol.

that still happens all the time to this day in places like best buy and geek squad

I miss the pre-facebook days. The chatrooms, the communities, the fact that you weren't constantly expected to post what you were doing and still had some time offline when you wanted to. Maybe I'm getting old, but this constant overexposure and availability (or being expected to be available) as well as expected social media partaking is increasingly getting on my nerves.

I played Barren Realms on a local BBS. Only one user could connect at a time. So I set the autodialer, and it would try over and over until the other user hung up. Sometimes would take an hour.

Yup.
And back then, people had "handles" because you'd NEVER use your real name online.

Now look at it..

Oh I can imagine. People aren't generally all that smart with it come to teh computerz.

Never really used Morpheus. I remember audio galaxy. Loved that site, but it went offline pretty quickly. Used Napster, used Kazaa, used eDonkey / eMule and eventually used Soulseek.

Technically worse, but more fun. Internet is shit now that it's common and everyone uses it like a soapbox.

Everyone used to say to never give out your info, now Everytime I log into steam it's asking for my fucking phone number.

Yep

That's why I still haven't signed up to be Zuckerberg 's bitch or Instagram the corn pieces in my shit

ever heard the term "hyperbole"? kys, you faggot

>Myspace
I remember when facebook started, you had to have an .edu email address and be apart of a (correct me if i'm wrong) community? Or something like that.

So many lost StarCraft games because someone picked up :(

It was like that with my ISP sometimes. I think they could only handle 20 simultaneous connections at one time.

I forget how they restricted it at first, but yeah it was university students only at first.

R@ygold

Wasn't Facebook supposedly created because Zuckerberg wanted to get laid? That being said there was a time before Myspace, and as a German we had a local community called Kwick that pretty much everyone I knew and met on the weekends was registered on. You had a profile, a guestbook and you could message each other. Myspace never really caught on in Germany before it tanked.

exactly
