Check out the labels Soundway and Analog Africa for some great compilations and backstories of the artists. Not much is released or played in western world so obviously you are not exposed to it in the same degree. Check out Music from Saharan Cell Phones release too or read about it. Lots of interesting facts about music and how it is done differently.
