How else are you meant to keep them running?

we actually have 120V supplied to the outlets. the reason for this is that we are literally the pioneers in electricity so when we first started we had uninsulated wires running to lamps. a 120V shock hurts, but it isn't fatal, except in incredibly rare situations. 240V is also not often fatal, though much more painful and in many more situations, fatal. We legitimately had children working in factories when electricity was first being supplied in the US.

Houses are actually supplied with two 120V lines on a 180 degree phase difference, effectively providing 240V, and appliances that require it are usually wired in through the house walls (or through the very rare outlet) when they are being installed.
And of course factories often specifically request more voltage supplied from their power company.

We're also at the much more optimal 60Hz frequency, which is by Tesla's observations, more efficient than you 50Hz barbarians.
