At least GT tried to be the adventure revolving around gathering dragon balls. DBZ was nothing but a circlejerk compared to the original concept. Dragon balls literally became a completely irrelevant plot device instead of the holy grail of the series.

Actually, the official end of the canon story is when the dragon grants the first wish and Goku topples Pilaf's castle. Everything after that is fanfiction.
