And the season still followed 3 detectives, with Frank coming into play majorly only for the latter half.

Gay cop and Ani were fine for what they did and accomplished thematically and in the narrative. Gay cop would be the worst offender, as he doesn't really add or take much of anything. His pay off is in his death unfortunately.

I thought True Detective S2 was fucking great. Watching week to week was one of the comfiest TV experiences I've had. I still think about it and I can't wait to rewatch it before S3 comes out. Never understood the hate -- I think people were expecting the same mood/vibe/experience/spoopyness as S1 and when it became obvious that S2 was going to be totally different and at the same time expect its audience to think, people said fuck it and gave up. I think this season will someday be appreciated for what it was instead of vilified for what it wasn't, and it will eventually become a cult classic of the second golden age of television.

True Detective season 2 isn't a masterpiece of television but it's still pretty decent television. It just didn't live up to expectations. Anyone calling it shit can't form their own opinions and just listened to the media lambasting it. Or they've never watched anything worse than S2, which well, lucky for them then.

I liked Paul though I thought there could have more of character explored like his marine past and his relationship with his mother which I thought may have incest subtext between them but just got dropped.

Also was Paul supposes to represent someone who wanted a life like Marty without all the flaws he seem really bent on making a family and being respected.
