FAQ:
>What is this game?
A 2d online fantasy RPG called Old World.
You can level up, mine, fish, cook etc.

>Will it be free to play?
Yes, and no pay-to-win elements.
You can donate for VIP status that gives you
some extra goodies and a gold badge, but nothing
that gives you an edge over other players.

>Can I help?
Yes. You can contribute with pixelart, MIDI music arrangements,
Sound effects, World Tiles, etc. Check stream for information on
rules on what I accept and how to match the games art style.

>What makes your game unique?
PVP Everywhere except towns, Interactable world
No classes, No forced main storyline (There is still world lore for those that want to examine shit)

>Where can I play this?
Currently holding a testing phase. Here's the client download.
puu()sh/sqBpW/7ffc78687f.zip
New client coming later today as well

>When will this game be released?
I'm not sure. The line for "final release" is blurry in my mind.
I'll probably just say fuck it and release the game at some point
where I think the game is ready for real play and not just testing.

Looks interesting. What's the combat like? I hope it isn't some instanced session like Final Fantasy but legit open world.

>pd
Live action combat, open world like you said. Limited to 5 abilities at once, can be switched out out of combat.

Graphical perspective, combat, no classes, etc etc etc etc

how about no

And better than ever boiiii

Seems like a lot of same fag bullshit because this game doesn't look interesting or in any way special.

Seems like a lot of same fag bullshit
>what did he mean by this

Are you inspired by realm of the mad god

It's inspired by mediocrity. That's why the first image is OP being super hyped about having a lighting layer that doesn't do any shadow casting.

Good job with the lamps lighting up the roof.

No, not really.

this boi is mirin my dynamic lighting engine obviously
stay mad

So 2d runescape classic?

>mmorpg
>so insert x mmorpg here?

you're not the first one

The fact that you'd even call this an engine is telling of your limited ability. This is a single function in a rendering method at best. At worst it's a clusterfuck of bad code that you threw together after watching a youtube video.

sup reddit

lol is this written in Java?

If only you knew
>pic very related

C#, monogame/XNA library

I do know. Because I've written code to do this and it's really easy shit.

You're like a kid who is running showing everyone that he can spell the word dog acting like you are fucking special.

show us your work then faggot

How many people can currently be connected an in the same room?

how about yes

>wahhh muh superior code
>stop making games

shut the fuck up
you really need to have sex with a human being

...

Haven't stresstested yet, but i'd guess way more than enough.

n o

get out

will you work for $0/hour?

What's the network coding like in this engine? Can you send stuff like JSON data or serialized objects or does it handle all of this automatically?

I'm not sure about the netcode, I haven't made the engine myself. Go ask JC, he owns ascensiongamedev.com

It'll be open source soon, you can check yourself by then.

> Can you send stuff like JSON data
Generally speaking that's a terrible way to handle networking code in a game. Games need to use binary updates and UDP to minimize latency. JSON is good for business applications, terrible for games.

Oh I know. It's great for js clients/mobile app and API communication but certainly not real time games.

I've always found in my games that I need a combination of TCP and UDP. TCP for guaranteed receipt of messages and the UDP for streamed updates.

Sure, ya. TCP for logins, item transfers, like you said - anything that requires guaranteed receipt. But movement updates or anything that requires low latency is UDP all day.

And even then, I wouldn't encode into JSON. Expanding and sending strings just isn't efficient enough for a system that demands efficiency.

Neato

No you're not, another game dev wannabe kiddo talking about an mmo

Yeah definitely not what JSON is intended for.

In something like C# how would you recommend encapsulating data and sending it to a server? I've previously created message classes and serialised those to send but do you have a better suggestion?

u jelly

Depends on the data. Last time I did it myself (I've since used libraries, Google has some good open source ones) I created structs for each package and serialized them after using some basic arithmetic coding. Yeah, arithmetic coding isn't as good as many other compression techniques but it's wicked fast which is important in real time games. I was optimizing for speed first and bandwidth second. But trying to keep both reasonable.

But I would recommending using a library, or even a framework made for games. There are tons of good ones these days.

kiddo game dev here. my latest game is making 2-3k a month on steam.

ez game ez life.

>hey guys im making a game
