I always thought the PeTA tie in was a stupid headcanon. Something stolen from a mediocre zombie movie.
My stories always blamed the release on hugboxy owners who let their pets get loose. The break-in was acknowledged, but only as an urban legend.
Why the hell would PeTA release artificial animals anyway? They're advocates for real animals, who would be harmed by a fast-breeding invasive species. It's a dumb HC.

Why would PETA release invasive species that cause ecological disasters in their new environment? Because they put emotions ahead of logic, and the idea of "Set animals free!" is a simple feel-good ideology as long as you don't think about anything at all.
While escaped and abandoned pet fluffies could explain ferals, the PETA break in explains why the fluffies are so flawed. A finished product would have had its bowel issues and stupidity fixed, but the early prototypes the fandom is built around have problems a proper product shouldn't have.
