Do graphics really matter in a video game?

Do graphics really matter in a video game?

Yes.

No

industrial game designer here
graphics matter since graphics are the interface to the customers, the window to the world, the one thing that grasps attention
once you have lured people, make sure to offer interesting mechanics and convincing story content, otherwise no one will remember

Depends on the type of game, but generally no

obvious consolefag

No

Mechanics over graphics everyday.

Fact is a games graphics are outdated within a year or two anyway, NO GAME lives on 20 years because it "had good graphics" but because it was epic in mechanics/story.

> Zelda OOT

Yes!! Look at E.T the videogame lulz. Graphics need to peak my interests and stuff..or I will growed bore of it.

no.
best example diablo 2, lasted for more then 12 years even with looong outdated graphics.
why ?
because gameplay was awsome

> WC3
Infinite hours of childhood.

OP here.
I'm a PCfag with a top-of-the-line PC capable of playing anything out there on the highest graphics settings possible at HD resolutions.
I think graphics aren't a big deal.

ET HD Remix

thing is that there were and there are many great games out there
The biggest difference between successful and unsuccessful games is popularity
sure Diablo 2 was great and is still great, but 2 warcrafts and starcraft made blizzard already very popular

Lold hard

starcraft 2 is allready dead.
thats the difference, compared to games wich got more attention.

Depends on the game.

BF4 hell yeah.

Undertale? No.

Of course, but like everything else, it is relative.

In modern video games, believe it or not, the music is just as important, and depending on the target audience, the subject and execution of the plot is even more important.

It's all about target audiences since everyone is different.

>implying women don't value income above all else

Yes, but not disproportionately more than the other aspects.

thus, focus on games suitable for masses
niche game studios sadly just dont survive 5 years

only a consolefag would think you have to chose one or the other.

Graphics matter if it's an action game, easy going games not so much
I like playing scribble nauts with my son

>dwarf fortress has been going for 10 years now

Never said that.

You can have both, sure.

But gameplay is by FAR more important that "muh HD WIDESCREEN 4D grafiiiiiiiiiix"

Seriously, if a game looks fantastic but plays like a clunky piece of shit with absolutely no substance, why are you playing it?

Trips of truth.
Have some ass, fine sir.

>dwarf fortress

its not that hard if you only have responsibility for your own life

Thanks and saved

It's funny you giving that an example of bad graphics. Makes me feel like some ancient wizard in some future world where people take for granted that they all stand on the shoulders of giants.

I couldn't tell you how many countless hours I've spent on pic related having a blast.

It's made by two people you mong.
And it's completely free to play, and they have no jobs.

Anyone in for deponia?

>games suitable for masses

I oppose this idea. Trying please everyone with certain ideas means you please no one.

AND you make modern games amalgamous blobs that all look exactly the same.

which is exactly what happens
On the other hand I enjoy that indie studios have more possibilities than ever nowadays

yes if it looks like shit I probably won't play it
same for shitty gameplay
