Is WoW worth getting back to/getting into as a new player in 2016 ?

I'd like to add to that. I played for 2 years and have a few level 80's. Is it worth getting back in to? I was a bit cheesed off when they made it so everyone can be level 80. WHats the point? Ruined all the effort in my opinion.

i thought so.
used to play in vanilla-> wrath.
my only gripe was that it seemingly got 'simplified', but it became a little more clear and definitive in talent speccs.

Just got done with Legion. Pretty boring.

Not sure if its worth the cash to start back up

also, you only get 1 character level-jump.
not including DKs or the new demon hunters, which have their starting levels lore-entwined a little.
any other toon that you make after the first has to be leveled from 1.

What ? Can you get insta 80 ? Is it like, if you get one character to 80, you can start the following ones at 80 ?
Anyway, that sucks a lot, yeah.

Oh, okay, so you get a character to 80, you get a free 1-to-80 on a toon, and all the other toons you have to level up manually ?
Yeah, that's not "so" terrible then, but still, I like the idea of working for getting stuff in a MMO, your character means so much more to you when you spent a lot of time leveling it up.

Thanks, so not as bad as i first thought but still. The time and effort to go in to an 80 shouldnt be free... not even once!

Game has been dildos since circa late 2008. Sunwell was the end of the game.
OP's a faggot

I actually never made it past level 40 or something I think.
I initially started on a private server, that was set somewhere in the beginning of BC, but stopped after some time, as the server was near empty.
So I guess I have a loooot of content to discover.
Do you think it's worth it in my case ? I think I'll do the free trial, see how it feels, but Idk if I wanna invest like 15 bucks a month into it...

Any private vanilla servers?

Well, that's the thing, half the WoW player seem to say "vanilla was better" "BC was better", and the other half is all about "still the greatest MMO out there".
Not sure who to believe, and I'm not sure I can invest thousands of hours to be really sure. Do you reckon it could still be fun for someone who barely played it ?

This

The challenge/effort is not in getting a character to max level. The challenge is completing the hardest raid encounters or completing the hardest dungeons at a high (+15) modifier. There's plenty to do, and the expansion has a lot more open world content than ever. A lot has changed, and you will find yourself in a completely new environment. I quite enjoy this expac, there have been whiners since vanilla.

Check out Elysium Project, picked up the nost servers, and relaunching on 17 dec, can recomend

I found something about a Feenix/Wow-one server, not sure what it's worth

Best it's been for a while, I'd give it a chance.

Yeah I'm having some good fun with it. Not too alt-friendly in terms of levelling though because the ilvl-elitist culture is still here but other than that I enjoy it. The world quests are neat and give me shit to do.

There is a Santa claus

The game will always, intrinsically have balance problems and content that is meant for more hardcore players, but there's almost nothing you can't do as a casual player. Sure, you won't clear the mythic raids or get the Mythic +15 dungeons done, but that doesn't mean your normal/ heroic raid progress won't be fun/meaningful to you.

It honestly depends what you are into. I like PVE, but I feel current endgame PVE is lacking. You have daily quest and dungeons you can do, then raids if that is your thing. But its very bland.

The PvP system seems the same to me. You get PvP points now that unlock buffs.

The story in Legion is OK, but not groundbreaking.

I say if you can find a good, active vanilla server, then go balls deep on it. Fuck paying for this Saturday morning cartoon autism fest.

>was banned
>6 months
>holyshiticanfinallyplaylegion
>level 110
>k bored now

You have nearly unlimited daily quests to do at your own leisure, a neverending stream of increasingly challenging dungeons and increasingly difficult raid encounters with bosses that have only been killed (at the time of posting) maybe 25 times. How is that bland? That's what the game is.

Thanks man, I'll check it out for sure !
Just hoping this is not a pay to win, or a server with stupid XP rates, like x10 or something, I think it kinda ruins the fun.

nostalrius is coming out again in December 17

elysium-project.org/

also check out the /nostalrius/ board on 8ch

Investing in an MMO is like asking a someone in the ghetto if they would like to rob you.

Its not p2w, its 100% blizzlike and the biggest vanilla realm, with 5k+ concurrent players. There are going to be 3 servers. Original Nost PVP realm, Original Nost PVE realm. (these two releasing dec 17) The PVP realm is just before AQ, and the PVE is just after ZG i belive. There is also going to be a new PVP realm named Elysium, the release date is going to be announced this weekend on elysium-project(.)org

it wont last long, those guys will be jailed in a few months if it goes through

Kek

Its a good game but the sense of community that WoW pre 2010 used to have is gone. After a while it sort of feels like you are playing a singleplayer game

Yeah, well I heard about that private server who had to be shut down a few months ago, and I don't know how hard Blizzard is going to hunt these down.
That'd be so shitty to have a decently geared char, and to just lose it all overnight because Blizzard consider they're not already making enough billions...

the more popular it gets, the higher chance its gonna get shut down

Join a guild, like not the first guild that invites you in trade chat, find a guild that actually does the things you want to do. Playing with a guild is a huge source of fun in the game. Why would you limit yourself to boring solo play?

>inb4 people are surprised when Nost gets shut down again

Yeah, that's one thing I'm afraid of too.
I like to just put music on, and grind XP/Gold in MMO, until it gets boring. Then I need to find people to play with.
I'm afraid that, because the game has been out for so long, all the action takes place at max level.
I guess something like 95% of the players already have a top level character. I'd like to see some stats about that, on the official servers...

>those guys will be jailed in a few months

the guys hosting the reopened nostalrius server (elysium-project) are in russia. blizzard can't do shit unless they somehow get trump and the republicans to pass SOPA, PIPA, and other mechanisms to block connections to russian servers through copyright infringement

You are retarded. Its not about the money, its about them protecting their trademark. I agree its shit that they will shut it down, but even your retarded brain can understand that if you made something, youd want to protect it aswell

>Why would you limit yourself to boring solo play?
I don't like dealing with other people. Plus the only thing you need a guild for in WoW is maybe mythics, if you don't want to run with pugs.

wow was only worth it during WOTLK expansion. don't bother returning for anything worth it

Here is what happend, Nost recived a C&D letter from blizz, and shut the server down, because they wanted to start a discussion with blizzard about legacy. This happend, but blizzard didnt want to do anything, so they (nost) gave their sourcecode (fixes to bugs and pathing in vanilla) to Elysium along with all of the accounts and characters, and they are now opening the server again. This time it wont be shutdown because Elysium have recived c&d letters before and have just thrown them out, also while the servers are in france atm some of the elysium ppl are from Russia, and if they shutdown the ISP, they will just move the servers to russia, keeping them up, although with a ping increase

I haven't played since 2007. I was thinking about playing again, but there are too many changes and the community seems to be solitary.

Vanilla and TBC (WotLK to an extent) were great.
Cata, MoP and WoD were fairly terrible. Especially the incomplete aspects of each expansion and the general aesthetic now that I think about it.

Legion has blown those out of the water for me.
To each their own, but Legion has rekindled my enjoyment of WoW and MMOs in general.

That's the thing, all the action does take place at cap. All zones are basically dead until you get to Legion.

So that's 100 lvls of zones with no one around

death knights were op and basically an instant 55 class.

Remember logging in during vanilla and pretty much knowing, or at least knowing of, every single level 60, both horde and alliance, on your realm?

Remember when realm forums were buzzing like fuck, before everyone used them for guild recruitment? Pretty much every server had some ultra dramas kick off on the realm forums, usually on a regular basis.

you get a level 100 boost with legion, other chars u gotta lvl 1-110. ofc, you can buy a lvl 100 boost for another 50 euros/usd ;)

I like legion, i used to play vanilla, tbc, wrath and cata aswell as half of mop and a month of wod.

legion is a lot of fun and its for any skill level these days. really good ways to play with friends, dungeons and zones are dynamic in legion, so you can do the same quest togheter even if ur mate is 109 and ur 100 you still get the appropriate % of xp for your level to etc.

But that's where the fun of the game is. I laugh and make banter with my guild during raids. We swapblast each other and do silly little things that make it more enjoyable than sitting in silence alone killing generic heroic dungeon encounters. Doing harder content becomes fun when you can accomplish them with friends. If you want to let your own digital social anxiety limit your fun, then that's unfortunate, because the game has so much more to offer than you're seeing.

its great.

Yeah, I would like to play with a guild.
The only thing is that I don't want to HAVE to play like 5 nights a week, because my guild wants to.
The impression I had from guilds was that they were either super competitive, or just so random that anyone was accepted, I never found a middle ground, with a guild with no obligation, fun people who are not jobless, spending 16h a day on the game, and just play it casually, but have good enough psychomotor functions to be able to raid or w/e.

well said.

If you're not running raids on Mythic+, you're not playing it right.

Oh I member

I've just about run out of steam with legion, mainly because of time constraints and losing the momentum. Was probably my favourite expansion since cata though so yeah, for the low price to get the expansion and a couple of months, I'd say you get your moneys worth!

If you like casinos, you will like WoW. If you don't like casinos, you'll be annoyed, aggravated, furious and depressed before you quit again.

Thats what makes it fucking bland

>make sure you log in to do your daily quests because theres nothing else fun to do
>oh you wanted to raid with us? link your achievement
I dont have an achievement this is my first time raiding
>ignored

> Just got done with Legion
> done with Legion
mfw Nighthold isn't even out yet and you're already done with it

I raid mythic 2 nights a week 19.30-23.00, that's enough to progress properly through the content and we're currently 4/7 in emerald nightmare, we will hopefully kill xavius, the last boss, before the next raid content comes out in early 2017.

we're having fun and just having a few hours of proper playing a week, to progress, is enough to keep enjoying raiding.

there are guilds who have even less requirements but it can't be on a real level unless people sync their schedules up and combine forces to accomplish something, mythic requires some training togheter as well as knowing how to properly play your class and spot in the raid.

This. Also, if you haven't plaid since WotLK, a lot has happened since.

Check your realm forums, there are so many guilds that play 2-3 nights a week. Most guilds do not raid 5 nights a week. You have to put in some effort to find the right guild for you, but good golly is it worth it. People are all pretty similar, so you shouldn't have too hard a time finding people on a fantasy mmo that you can laugh and have fun with provided you have similar goals. If you don't put in the effort to find one, then yea, you're going to only see the two kinds of guilds you mentioned.
I'm going to pretend you didn't say "Raids on mythic +" and assume you meant mythic raids and M+ dungeons. Nice bait either way. People have fun with content of different difficulty, doesn't mean their fun is less meaningful to them.

>implying Nighthold will be challenging or fun in any way

Sounds like you're just pug plebbing. Join a fucking guild and get the aotc with them.
What you're still 840? Then you're literally just doing nothing but stand in Dal all day. Make a group yourself if you can't get invited.

It's less meaningful to me.

>liked Cata
People who enjoyed Cata are the reason the game died.

Cata is better than Legion. Atleast alts were fun

My point is that their trademark is not threatened at all by a few thousand players enjoying an old version on the game on a server. People will not find this server before finding the official WoW website.
Of course, it is legitimate for them to claim their intellectual right, but it is just so ridiculous to me that Blizzard would actually care about it, when these servers aren't even competitors, in any way, shape or form. They shouldn't feel threatened by these servers, and besides simple ego, I don't think it makes sense to hunt these servers.
If you or I made something, it would be different. Obviously, if you'd build something single handedly, you'd want to protect it. But for a project made by such a huge group, who is now so successful, it seems stupid to do this.
Another side is player's enjoyment. A lot of players have claimed that they prefer Vanilla WoW. They expressed their wish to have Blizzard open a Vanilla server so they could have this old school experience. Blizzard didn't want to. So people made their own servers. Blizzard approached the problem the wrong way, instead of punishing people who made/used these servers, they should have made it so that there was no need for such servers.

Well that's fine, I'm going to have fun tonight in raid on M Guarm whilst you rage on M Cenarius. My experience has shown me that only the elitist ragey types are the ones that only think they're good enough to do the top end content. How are those 55% parses coming?

quit subscription because of legion after i've gotten back into it for dreanor, before that i quit because pandaria sucked. WoW was good, now blizzard turned it into the most casual piece of shit ever made.

I cancelled my sub 5 months ago lol

Played every Xpac since TBC but on private servers, only bought the original game in WoD to be disappointed, Legion is pretty good but it's quite the grindfest. Then again WoW's always been grindy. Overall it's the best expansion since Wrath IMO and blizzard feels bad because they neglected the content for WoD so they're pumping out dungeons and raids every few months. It's alright.

I'm kinda like OP, except I did re-sub a couple months ago. I don't play much, but with some 10 hours per week I'm 833 now. I still have a few dungs and all raids to do so I do have a "goal" to pursue, but I already see signs that it will soon become a tedious waste of time. Doing WQs for the sake of doing WQs and rolling Titanforged to replace your Warforged whatever is just as fun as growing pumpkins in your browser farming "game". I may get into battlegrounds later, but I don't like PvP really and being Holy Priest it's just no fun when some dipshit two-shots me. This is my first time doing endgame, is there any more to it, or is this all really?

I kinda regret taking the 100 boost. I guess I could just roll a new character and enjoy rest of the game and all the previous expansions I skipped.

is it like nostalrius? i feel bad for missing out on it and only knowing about nostalrius when it became big news when it was shut down.

>all the faggots say new wow is crap
>haven't even tried it for themselves

Not if you find a normal guild, took me a while but I found a cool guild and felt like I was playing TBC again.

>My point is that their trademark is not threatened at all by a few thousand players enjoying an old version on the game on a server
You don't know shit about trademark law. Unauthorised private server is a trademark infringement. If Blizz does not take steps to protect their trademark, they open themselves to the possibility of their trademark being challenged by a 3rd party because they demonstrated that they don't care about it. Basically it sets a precedent. From the legal point of view, they have no choice but to shut them down.

Common sense has nothing to do in this case unfortunately.

Faggots have seen the trajectory WoW has taken in the last 7 years or so. WoW has been fucking bilge for far longer than it was ever good.

>This low quality bait
i'm insulted.

I don't have to take a dump to know what one looks like.

Okay, you're a healer. Here's what you should look into doing: Mythic + dungeons. There should be a neverending stream of groups who would love to have you with them. As a healer, you don't have to learn the interupt targets or the right pulling paths, you just have to keep the group going and try to be careful with your mana so as to avoid periods of sitting/drinking. Mythic + are a lot of fun and a great way to show yourself that you can handle higher and higher levels of content. It can also be very challenging/rewarding and a great way to continue getting gear. The one caveat is that you WILL need to get your ilvl higher before anyone wants to invite you to anything above an M+3. To get yourself to 850, you should try and do all of the regular mythic dungeons in a week and see if you can get into a normal EN pug or something. 850 is really easy, look up some guides online. Trust me, the M+ challenging content can be really fun if you can get a consistent group or push yourself up to higher levels.

It is Nostalrius, most of the devs are the same, but the people who went to blizz HQ are not on the project

The game got to a point where the only thing I enjoyed was going into random battlegrounds and smashing new kids in the face. Now everyone in the battleground gets the same stats, even if they just hit max level. And there are no new battlegrounds. So they finally ruined the last corner of the game. Fuck 'em.

It's honestly pretty fun again OP. People who hate it are alliance shitdicks who get rolled in PvP everyday. Play horde.

Sounds great, thanks for the info.

I didn't say it was legal to have these servers up and running, I know it's a trademark infringement, you must have misunderstood my message, but I forgive you.
>If Blizz does not take steps to protect their trademark, they open themselves to the possibility of their trademark being challenged by a 3rd party because they demonstrated that they don't care about it
I didn't know about this though, it's interesting. So legally, is there a certain time limit for Blizzard to send a C&D to the servers' owners, before they can be qualified as "not giving a fuck about their own trademark", and have it challenged by someone else ?
I didn't know that they HAD to take action, I thought that it was left to the company's appreciation to let this go on or to make it stop.

>turned it into
It started in the 1.10 patch, faggot, epix being handed out for times Strat UD 5 man runs. The final nails were being hammered in when they were giving out rank 14 shit for honor points before TBC came out. TBC was fucking awesome but the trajectory was set.

Actually since they changed it, so more people can tag mobs in the world, helping strangers is fun and rewarding again.
Except for those fucking Alliance.

Sounds like you suck dick at PvP if you can't kill the big kids

I'd like to play it if I could afford it. Alas, poorfag is poor; and bugs in private servers are icky.

Absolutely man.
I only played WoW one time before and that was on a private server with Cata.

Bought legion and the base game from a key reseller for cheap because my girlfriend kept talking about it. WoW might be out of its golden years, but we never really experienced them, so if you like how legion plays, who cares.

Hold onto your level 100 boost for a bit. Do the class preview things for anything that sounds interesting. Try to play a class that can do multiple roles.

Main reason I say this is because the game seems tuned to players having one serious character they put the bulk of their time on and very few alts. The way artifact grind works in Legion makes it pretty hard to maintain across multiple characters. Playing multiple specs in the same class is much easier once you start getting artifact knowledge though.

Casual guilds are out there. I my GF was already in one before I started playing so it wasn't too hard for me. I only raid occasionally with my toaster pc and nobody cares. Everything is voluntary, but playing with people you know is nice.

Oh, yeah, actually I've looked it up as "Loss of trademark rights", I didn't even know that was possible, thanks for clarifying that.
So it all boils down to how sneaky a private server can be, and how good it can hide/protect its servers. So I guess, eventually, every private server is meant to be taken down, or at least the bigger ones.

Are you kidding me battlegrounds are easier then ever now. Guess you just suck dicks.

If you return only do it for pve

Pvp is so awful it's laughable, if you wanna win 2s just go with mw monk and any ret/dh/ww. For 3s replace mw monk with hpala. They removed honor gear so pve'ers have a huge advantage now, go figure.

You made Samefag?

That sounds good, thanks m8. I'll probably need to up my game by a lot, I think I'm doing fairly well in Normal dungeons, but then if someone dies I'm not sure if that's because I failed or that they did some stupid shit. I'm slowly getting my 860+ gear from weekly world bosses, with that plus Seal of Fate it's going pretty well unless I get fucked over completely by RNG. I really should start getting into raids, but honestly I feel a bit intimidated by the difficulty, as well as limited by my small amount of free time.

Two of them might be samefagging, but one of 'em is me, faggot.

Really?? Fuck, they really killed the game. I loved the sense of progression; crafting your PvP starting gear so you'd stand a chance, getting your gear piece by piece with honor; being able to defend an objective, the first time you win a duel a full geared guy; then the first time you get first place in kills or whatever; and yes, then one shooting the new guys and being a terror on your own.

If all that is gone then fuck the game. Definitely not coming back.

Where are of the documentations.

lol wot.. who gives a fuck.

the fun is in gearing and learning shit.

Don't know if they took it out or not, but in WoD, you could straight up buy honor/conquest points off the AH through a commendation thing.

Just jump into the mythic base level dungeons, and try your hand in normal EN. Worst that could happen is a group kicks you, literally nothing else. Don't get intimidated, the game isn't THAT hard. It's probably the pugs who stand in fire anyways, even still, they won't even know if it was your fault, they will probably just think its their own. And if you get a keystone from a mythic dungeon, I guarantee you can get a group to carry your +2 key for some free gear even if you don't intend to do any more this week. What faction are you? NA?
