It's Chris Cornell for both as well as being the best overall musician, but I love all three though.

Shoulda done a Layne v Kurt thread, who was the bigger junkie
personally i think vedder is a lot better of a songwriter than he gets credit for. some of the tracks on vs. and vitalogy are severely underrated.
layne is the coolest and he had true mystique and charisma which let him take a lot more chances with his vocal style than the other two.
cornell is obviously the most classically talented vocalist of the three but sometimes i find his wail to be overly operatic and he pretty much stays in the same two registers on all the songs.
This, but Vedder's voice can be irritating, almost like James Hetfield/Chad Kroeger at times.

But this was between Cornell, Staley, and Vedder though, Cantrell had nothing to do with this.
Also he's still not better.

I always though Vedder had an awesome voice, but I'm not to crazy about their songs.
Layne Staley's only good if you like heroin

I can never get into Soundgarden.
Pearl Jam have some admittedly pretty songs and Alice in Chains I genuinely like - a good meld of metal and grunge.
