Jazz Essentials

I'm making a playlist and I'm looking for some nice jazz albums. I'm not too familiar with the genre but I really like Scenery.

I regret not adding Death Wish to this guide.

...

...

>Bitches Brew - Miles Davis
>The Shape of Jazz to Come - Ornette Coleman
>A Love Supreme - John Coltrane

Those are some of my favorites but are extremely entry level and coming from someone who doesn't typically listen to jazz. The Sup Forumscore chart has some other good ones.

And if you're counting jazz fusion beyond Miles Davis,
>Hot Rats - Frank Zappa
>Anything by Pat Metheny Group

>Hancock 4 times.

I approve. Good taste, friend.

5 times but thx bebe

Even better, senpai'ly! Good shit m80.

bumpo

im redoing this chart to honor the lad who made it (helped me to appreciate jazz a bit more)

summoning jazzthreadguy: thank you

If you're redoing it, please for the love of god get rid of the ODJB. Including that garbage isn't just dumb, it's insulting.

rag mama rag

yeah now this is what I'm talking about

hi from r/jazz

fuck I've been ousted

prepare to be doxxed.

that max roach album is awesome. and on the corner doesn't get too much love.

I've redone a few guides on different boards and found that not having creative input (ie changing the guide) is the way to go if you want to avoid toxicity

Id rather just modify texts so they fit in better in the design, but that's it

Thanks for the input tho, appreciated

well that's a system of a down record so im not sure it belongs in the jazz guide anyways?

I've thought about redoing that chart many times because it's far from perfect, but a chart like that never really will be.

why so defeatist

charts are kinda dumb

which is the one between out to lunch and nation time?

shots fired...at yourself.

not him but Adam's Apple - Wayne Shorter

thanks user

So why is Miles second quintet objectively better than his first?

+ experience

>Masada - 9
>Ornette Coleman - The empty foxhole
>John Coltrane - Meditations
>Don Cherry - Dona Nostra
>Kamasi Washington - The Epic
>Albert Aylet - Spiritual Unity
I'm a pleb sorry, I just really love free jazz

Forgot:
>Pharoah Sanders - Jewel of Thought
>Eric Dolphy - Aspects (some compilation with some killer cuts)

was this recommended to you on youtube a while ago and now you've made this thread

>kamasi washington
>free jazz

otherwise good list.

I'd add Coleman's Science Fiction Sessions and Dolphy - Iron Man

you're welcome

Grant Green is.......Solid.

Right on, I just thought I'd mention it but feel free to do your own thing. The whole pre-war section has a lot of flaws, but having ODJB on there is by far the biggest issue.

ODJB has historical relevance as making the first "jazz" recordings (big emphasis on quotes) among other things, but their early stuff is just white musicians performing a scripted imitation of what an actual jazz band would sound like, most notably without any improvisation. On top of that, they were insistent on calling themselves the "Creators of Jazz" even when it was well-known that wasn't the case and took a lot of undue credit.

In short, fuck the ODJB.
