Missed my turn to go see Gullfoss on road 35. The road ended up turning into F35, which as you know is a 'mountain' road for the highlands.
I kept driving, continually thinking "The turn out to Gullfoss should be showing up any minute now".
I eventually took my phone out of airplane mode and enabled the GPS (which I was keeping off, because having it on whilst both the cell phone signal and the GPS signal were weak was really draining my battery quickly.) To my surprise, I was able to get a GPS signal. I didn't have a data connection though, so I couldn't zoom in on the map to see detailed information about the roads. I had no paper map either, but I knew from memory from looking at Gulfoss' location on Google maps that it wasn't that far inland.
Turns out I drove like 90 minutes too long, ended up turning around. I found the highlands to be the most beautifully desolate area of the country. Very otherworldly in landscape.
Once I realized and was certain of my mistake and was on my way out of the highlands back towards Gullfoss, I took this attached pic. It didn't turn out well, but it's one of the only pictures I got of the highlands.
This was early in my long trip around the country, (so I was still pretty green you could say) No harm, no foul, just a bit of wasted time and gas. Fun fact: If I had kept going, the road (F35) would have ended me up in north, a little west of Varmahlíð
