Do you mean the color? Olive Drab.

Or do you mean the horizontal stabilizer?

Sorry for not being clear, I meant the tail insignia. I can somewhat makeout the side and the USAAF star logo, but nothing else.

Bump may have answer

Well- there's the serial number of the B-17, it's 42-31852.

americanairmuseum.com/aircraft/5991 Here's your B-17.

The crew: 493bgdebach.co.uk/Documents/Roster 493rd BG Debach.pdf

"Vaudeville- it's coming back!" was the plane's name. Looks like it was lost in 1944.

Check this site, I think this pkane was 463rd bomb group

thank you my friend, I need answers bad.

I've recently found another pic, but it says it's a different plane (refer to A/C)..

Can anyone tell me what the digits are on the tail for conformation?

Aye, twas 463rd.

here's a pic from the site showing a plane, not necessarily yours. Appears to be the aircraft tail number, more checking needed to get the right number for yours

Probably waht ever symbol and color denotes the 5th air force, second group.

I tried to look up the fin-flash for the 5th air force, but I don't see it. it'll be a colored letter on a colored background.

My dad's uncle was in the 15th air force, and flew from North Africa, then Sicily, then Italy. he survived the war. he was a Sgt and the radio operator.

The serial numbers would probably be

431852

I know for a fact the 5th AF, 463rd group had a yellow rudder in mid-late war.

There was a website showing many B-17's tail colors. I'll send link if I find it.

Thats awesome, my uncle flew in Ploesti and unfortuantley died over a mission. He was a waist gunner and tail

My guess would 231852 based on how they were numbered, the leading 4 was left off I think

Ah. The full code is 42-31852

Any tips on how it was arranged?

Ok, this confirms it, aircraft 42-31844 shown in photo, with tail number 231844.

Heres the website I was talking about. Hopefully you'll find your uncles B17.

Good luck!

Thank you. Luckily I didn't go all out with this one photo.

Op if you're referring to the dark rectangle to the top-right of the USAF logo I think it's the rear left Gunner's port.

First two digits are probably year of manufacture, last five are unique serial number from that year.

Also, search for old photos from Celone Airfield in Italy, that's where this Bomb Group was assigned.

Nah, was referring to insignia.

OP here

Theres also another plane my uncle regualry flew on. I've never been able to find photos of it at all although :/

The serial is 42-3175 (ironic it being one number off the other)

It's nickname was "The Simp"

If ye need more info, lmk

Here's an unusual illustration that might help. Notice 463rd on the right

Oops, here was the site that came from
2ndbombgroup.org/15thairforce.htm

ah, thank you! This will definitely come in handy!

K hope that's enough to get go rolling, good luck.

This site shows a 42-3175 but the plane is "The Ha", not the simp. Crew Photo on the page though. 379th bombardment group.

sites.google.com/site/379thbgnoseart/

Sorry for the late reply. But Looks as if somethings been painted over. Wouldn't you agree?

Actually, the simp was 42-31752, you just left a digit off the number in your other post. So that photo is not it, The Simp was also 463rd BG out of Celone

Thanks for all the help lads! I've found a photo of the plane! Many thanks!!

Aye, forgot to add it. My bad on that part.

I'm trying to find The Simp as of now, sine I found a photo of the Vaudeville

Nice

As a side project, this page has many crew photos from the 463rd if interested.

463rd.org/individuals/index.htm

Ah. I've seen the page, found my uncle and his first crew actually. Sites kickass

Well, no luck on the Simp, maybe try searching the various Air and Space museum collections or National Museum of the Air Force historical sources, good luck.

for anyone still on the thread, I found a CGI of Vaudeville, It's Coming Back

I think it looks pretty fuckin spot on.
