bitch I'm back out my coma

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

>Aby Ngana Diop - Liital
The first song on this is such a funky song, but afterwards everything else gets very cryptic and tribal. Although it remains very passionate and interesting throughout the whole work. It's a very gripping and fun listen, although hard at points. If every song were like the first, though, this would be a legendary album.

nice samba/lounge jazz, not much else to say. if your into this, you'll probably enjoy this.

Schoolly D - Schoolly D (1985)
>Hip Hop, Turntablism, Gangsta Rap

Very cool early hip hop and primitive gansta rap (acknowledged as much by Ice-T apparently) from Philadelphia. These songs are long and super sparse, very rough-sounding. The beats are killer though, and the DJing is very of his time (D.J. Code Money). The way there’s no other rappers for the entirety of each of these 6-7+ minute tracks can be somewhat off-putting though, giving this a bit of an outsider music vibe. Would highly recommend though, lots of killer beats and rhymes here, even if the meshing (or lack thereof) is probably an acquired taste.

It’s really hard to pick a favorite track here, but “P.S.K. ‘What Does It Mean’?” has a lot going for it, and “Gucci Time” has a the best refrain—that chorus just gets better every time.

>9-/10

Black Moth Super Rainbow - Dandelion Gum (2007)
>Neo-psychedelia, Noise Pop

Weird but not that weird synth psychedelia with some weak breakbeats. The songs are usually cool-sounding but also usually aimless and lame. The sounds here are really neat, but the songs are so passive and uninteresting that I find it hard to enjoy them or even notice them consistently (that breakbeat backdrop is really just that—background). If I do enjoy a track it kind of feels like a mistake. The opener is legit great though, and the album does end on a high note: the triumphantly psycho/active “Drippy Eye” and “Caterpillar House”. Plus, I do like the vaguely plunderphonic aesthetic.

>6-/10

Black Moth Super Rainbow - Cobra Juicy (2012)
>Neo-psychedelia, Noise Pop

The production and mixing are much improved—the whole thing is a lot punchier, and the production altogether markedly more interesting. However, it is a lot of more of the same. The vocals and lyrics are somehow even worse though—mostly because they’re more prominent.

More of the same, more like more of the lame, lmao

>4+/10

>chico buarque
>it's not Construção

Li Jianhong - 三生石 (2008)
>Noise, Drone, Free Improv

This is Haino/Mizutani-type massive guitar wailing shit, but monumentally and beautifully done in a surprisingly emotive and absolutely monolithic 51-minute guitar piece. Far from a noise wall, it does have a remarkably distinctive sound and clear component movements. All it needed to do was have a great, or even a good finish, but the non-ending here is beyond disappointing.

>7/10

Lez Rallizes Dénudés - Etcetera, Vol. 2 (1996)

Speaking of Mizutani, I gave this EP of extra stuff a listen too. There’s only two tracks here, “黒い悲しみのロマンセ或いは Fallin' Love With” and “永遠に今が”, 7:40 and 6:40 each. While harsh feedback is still very much the abject fascination of the group, it’s more often injected into these songs than sustained throughout, perhaps to greater effect—but really it just means the rest of the song is boring. The second track almost has a pseudo-funky, smoke on the water rhythm to it and a particularly terrible recording quality.

I guess this is for collectors’ ears only? These tracks hardly merit physical release, let alone their own EP.

>5-/10

Sis Q Lint - Pre-Need E.P. (1984)
>No Wave, Minimal Synth

First track is nearly spoken word, about a ghastly Gatsby-esque billboard face, with some random synth shit and a quick succession of off-kilter singing skits, about 20 seconds each. The second track, “The Divine Praises” is a far-off recording of a hymn in the left ear and an ASMR-tier prayer in the right—interrupted by radio-fed dada. “Dog Sweaters” is almost comically bad synth pop with gross sound effects. “Jap Monster Movie” is actually a decent if kitschy track, and includes the hilarious line “…just like a Jap monster movie, you’re a monument to tack.” Rarely am I a fan of these 80s art punk minimal wave one-offs though, and this is not an exception.

>4/10

heck

\$hit and \$hine - 54 Synth-Brass, 38 Metal Guitar, 65 Cathedral (2015)
>Noise, Industrial, Dance punk???

A bunch of experiments with a simple formula: glitch improvisation and rock-oriented noise, over driving and throbbing mechanical bass and drum blasts. It’s pretty industrial techno in its repetition and beats, but I’d wouldn’t dare simplify whats going on here to just ol’ “techno”. The variety here is extremely impressive, especially considering how narrowly categorizable these tracks appear on paper. Virtually every track here has the potential to be a standout track. All together the album overstays its welcome a bit though, and the repetition can get to you, no matter how they switch things up track to track.

Shouldn’t have held out on this for so long. I remember seeing it on the Quietus’s 2015 year end list.

>7/10

Lowlife - Swirl, It Swings
>Post-punk, Dream Pop

Wow, what a voice. If Robbie Basho did dreamy, reverb-drenched post-punk, like a more hypnotic version of the Smiths. But man, that voice and those chords and that reverb—the whole thing just resonates beautifully. At 16 minutes, four tracks is the perfect length for this band—they honestly start sounding a little same-y by track three. Track four is probably the best of the bunch though, so who knows.

Somebody recommended this to me directly here, so thank you. You know who you are, but let me know.

I was studying for an easy exam yesterday, so I ended up listening to a lot.

ok I'm done now, all out of reviews

>Schoolly D gettin' respect
B^D

god bless

damn, i really gotta relisten to jianhong.

all these reviews and still no public strain...

so is it chart posting time? i hate how compressed the album covers get when i edit in the background picture.

not exactly my favorites, just what i've been listening to recently a lot.

strange picks i dont understand:
abba - gold
led zeppelin - III [literally the worst zeppelin what are you doing]
an impressive amount of dadrock
ya ho wha 13, it's just so out of place amongst everything else

>those great tier jazz picks
im impressed

I'm playing Chapter 013 right now

Chico Buarque De Hollanda is one of the catchiest, most positive albums I've ever heard though. The lyrics on Construcao are awesome but I'll take his debut over it any day t b h.

I Jonathan needs more love

did you use to trip under a different name?

Alright so this is everybody who signed up for listenalong (if I'm not mistaken), with a number to the left of their names as you can see so just gonna go to random.org and randomize a sequence of 23 numbers to get the listening order and this weekend we'll get to listening.

ok I can see that. Listen to Erasmo Carlos, btw ;)

ya missed me, dummy

I tripped under Rainman for like a month last year

Does it ring a bell?

ok u are 24
so gonna chekc I have not missed anbody else and then randomize 24 numbers

fuck i wanted to be last

i remember rainman

>get 9th place
>oh i forgot one guy have to randomize again
fucking hell

do NOT look at that that pic has 23 entries and there's 24 it's NOT valid

Thanks dude, I dig your taste as well. First time I've seen positive reception of REM on /daily/ I think.

this time for real I think
have you posted you wanted in btw?
i've checked both threads and it don't seem so

>second
o jeez o darn

Oh wait, I did! I can post a review if you want, I was just gonna post the finished chart later this week since I've been lazy

I must not have posted. I apologize!

>not liking abba
disgusting

>Led Zep III worst Zep
What the actual fuck

>Dadrock
Fair enough I am extremely uncool and white

>ya ho wha
Unlike many psych bands this really captures the paranoia I feel on drugs, and plus it's a great album

it's no rush bb

okay im feeling this one a lot more than all screwed up

i'm okay with abba but i can't really handle more than two songs in a row
not dissing ya ho wha, i like that album.

>13th place
shoot me

im not a big chart poster/maker but i figure ill share what ive been digging this month.

a lot of it is basic rym shit i feel like, but hey, its enjoyable. maybe i should get my last.fm working again.

damn, off by one

>maybe i should get my last.fm working again.
yeah that sounds like a good idea

p good

So this should be the order now, starting with co this weekend, get pickin that album.

Also remember to PARTICIPATE and listen to the record that gets picked.

yeah sorry bout that

kinda yeah, thought I've seen that chart before.

DEAD FUCKING LAST

ideally, it should be something no one else has heard right

Are we going to do the shared picture thing again? Those can get annoying if people do their ratings simultaneously or download the wrong picture.

Perhaps we can do a google doc or even make a list on rym and someone collects everyone's mini reviews and posts it.

Cola & Jimmu - I Give to You My Love & Devotion (2013)
>house, soulful.house

I came into this listen completely unprepared for what lay ahead; a house plebe. With that said, I'll come into this review not as a house aficionado, but rather as a music fan.

The opener sounds like something they'd play at H&M, something trendy but not necessarily earth-shattering for me. The same goes for the rest of side A, which has some moments, but isn’t necessarily all that good; I could drop any of these in a random set and nobody would blink an eye. Cola’s voice is exceptional, however, and it should be noted that Jimmu is a very talented producer. The shooting star of their work together reaches its apex on side B’s opener, “Open Up Your Chakra”, a fantastic, 6-minute odyssey of catchy riffs and beats that will leave you foot-stompin’, ass-shakin’ and head-bobbin’ all day and all night.

4/5

it's fine, I'm in it more for l the social event anyways, no idea what i would rec if it would be my turn now
I highly doubt this will go on until september, but we'll see

you get to put a pic in em

>autechre - oversteps
shit's more stereotypically "spacey" than the autechre i've heard and i'm a succer for that sound

ambient next, probably

Quick question: Does anyone know what this type of design/pattern is called? Does it have a name? Pretty sure it originates from something to do with 60s/70s interior design, but I can't find a name for it.

Top left is Luxury by Fantastic Plastic Machine, Right is the Brothers Strong's basement from H*R, and bottom left is the basement pattern from the American Sitcom "Too Close For Comfort" (which I think the two former may have borrowed from the latter, if this doesn't have a name that is).

I know this might seem autistic as fuck but I just want to know if this is called anything because I like the aesthetic and didn't know where else to ask. Sorry for the shitty image made over the course of 3000 hours in paint.

I can't help it man. I read your name as "porn" every time I'm sorry.

nice dubs, and also I'd encourage to keep exploring Zappa. If you liked Freak Out you'll no doubt find something of substance from his early stuff.

It clicked for me when I started hearing more memphis/southern rap, which is surprisingly all consistantly good imo

Glad I could turn you onto Koko ;)

wtf is with that opacity though?

aye we in this

last year I did a bad prog album literally no one liked, so this is my chance to redeem myself. After that the RYM score for it went down by .2 lol

I like that Doopees a lot, but every time I rehear it I like it a lot less idk what it is about it. I think the novelty sorta wears after a bit.

Good chart otherwise. I need to hear Gachet sometime.

Would souvlaki be this good if it had a different cover? not that the music is bad, but I think that the effect that the album art has, unconsciously, inside my mind helps me to enjoy more it ,someway.

doesnt matter desu

>Glad I could turn you onto Koko ;)
i was onto koko long before

>I can't help it man. I read your name as "porn" every time I'm sorry.
hah

its not even a good album pic desu

I'm lazy and don't feel like writing reviews for the others. But here's a quick chart update

Erasmo Carlos - Carlos, Erasmo (‘71)
>MPB, Tropicala

I’m a sucker for this whole MPB thing. It’s always so positive and uplifting, I can’t get enough. This manages to blend a lot of those upbeat Samba vibes with psych rock, with cool instrumentation and production techniques. It takes some skill to mesh genres this effortlessly, I’m pretty impressed by Carlos on here.

From the start, this is awesome. “De Noite Na Cama” is a psychedelic, poppy little Samba cut, with cool shakers, shouts and jangly guitar. “E Preciso Dar Um Jetio, Meu Amigo” has a phenomenal blend of elements and summarizes exactly why I love this album. The bassline is incredible, the guitar is exactly as psych rock/funk as I’d like and the strings add such a lavish feel to the whole thing. Plus - that sax solo! There’s little touches from outside genres that combine to make something so unique and engaging. Even tracks like “Gente Aberta” which are fairly standard Samba/MPB tracks, are excellent and really entertaining.

I should really learn Portuguese. I’d enjoy this shit a little more I think.

Anyway, good shit. Thanks for the rec pom.

3.5/5

Prob just gonna bore people with Neil Young over the next week or so, becoming obsessed again

can you remember who recd it to you? I've never listened to that Lowlife but love Permanent Sleep, don't think I've ever seen anyone else gush about them here. Will need to check this out

yay pretty early, should get in before everyone gets bored of listenalongs!

Pygmalion has a better cover than Souvlaki

I thought most people hated this artwork t b h, it's just a picture of the band

The album art isn't that great though? And no, the music isn't that good really. It's more about timing/influence on indiegaze than anything else.

shut thef uck up

Great cover and an alright album too. Better than Souvlaki imo.

I feel the opposite, love the music but hate the design. That cover makes me think that this is a shitty goth album from like 2005

True, I love that cover

Just For A Day is my favourite tee bee aych, kinda generic woah shoegazey swirl but it's the nicest

check out the visual score it comes from
youtube.com/watch?v=71hNl_skTZQ

>that helvetica on the album cover

I find it hard to get into Pygmalion, it feels fragmented and sparse, similar to an ambient or jazz album at times, like they were trying to work in different roots but as the album progresses I have the feeling that it's incomplete, mostly because there tunes like Crazy for You so close to miranda and etc.

I gonna put some Zappa on my next chart, cause I'm curious to see if I find something else I enjoy

>4th

>Various Artists - The Sounds of Earth: Voyager Golden Record
I think arguments can be made for and against this record’s magnitude and its cultural relevance. It sure is cool that a physical copy of this is out there floating in space somewhere, waiting to be discovered by aliens. Though it really is more of a sentiment than anything concrete. Anyway, beyond that there’s the music. The field recordings were surprisingly cool. It succeeds in what it sets out to do, which is to give a sample of the wide variety of natural noise, but it flows in a seamless and musical manner instead of playing sound bytes one by one. I actually think this was my favorite part. Then for the selected music we begin with Bach and travel across the world. The world music samples are unsurprisingly inoffensive, but there are some good selections indeed, though none too memorable. They even put some Chuck Berry and Blind Willie Johnson on here! I won’t really go into detail because it would be pointless. Overall, it’s an enjoyable cultural relic (that some claim is too eurocentric… well it was the UN after all) but not one that I’d see myself revisiting. If anything, it made me realize I need to listen to more classical. I think everyone should hear it once though, it’s a fun experience.

>McCoy Tyner - Asante
Much more interesting than The Real McCoy. The percussion was varied (mmm... bongos), the sax playing was mesmerizing, and the minimal, abstract female vocals were heavenly. It’s meditative and tribal. A fine jazz album but still slightly pales in comparison to the tropical bliss of Sama Layuca. Though we do see Tyner’s skill of allowing each of the elements that make up his music to breathe. There’s a lot going on, but it never clusters together in a mess. It just works.

>Arsedestroyer - XXX ! Teenass Revolt ! XXX
As far as grindcore goes, at least coming from someone who has yet to really like a grindcore album, this was decent. It has what I want: slight variation and no guttural, belching vocals. The extreme lo-fi production works to its advantage, creating extra layers of noise that sounded good. Also, the drumming was top notch. For once, there were actually different drum patterns that changed as the song progressed (though keep in mind the songs are ~1:30 so they were rapid fire). It warrants more listens, but I didn’t hate it which is cool.

Forgot to add one more thought. Teenass Revolt is like Tokyo Anal Dynamite but without the charm.

Can someone confirm that this

rateyourmusic.com/release/unauth/les-rallizes-denudes/heavier-than-a-death-in-the-family-2/

Is pretty much the same thing as `77 Live? The tracks on `77 live are Japanese so I can't tell. If they're the same I prob won't listen to it.

Once you get to Fishmans, make sure you review them all in the same thread. At least two posts per album please

iirc it is, should prob get a second opinion tho

*a post per track

also, remember not to adhere to any common english grammar rules and instead opt for excessive use of hyperbole

lol literally the same thing but with one track less

she's really tired
>number 7
>7th in line
whoa.............................
yeah that cover almost makes me enjoy the music less. i prefer the one thats like all black/ all brown with that picture in the bottom right
okay replacing it in my chart then

Good review of VGR

>that some claim is too eurocentric… well it was the UN after all
This is 100% true, and I think the thing I dislike the most about VGR if anything. It could be justified by noting that the majority of recorded music comes from western culture, and that western popular music is heavily influenced by elements brought from Africa, but I still think they could've done more from around the world since that's what they were trying to represent anyways.

The version I listened to was a really shitty rip, so I thought it was just a worse bootleg, but Hampus corrected me saying it was pretty much the same, just arranged differently.

And yeah, Heavier Than a Death is basically '77 Live in an order that makes less sense and with minus one track.

Seriously though, do Chappie Don't Cry first if you're doing Fishmans so that we can at least have a negative review on an album. I highly doubt it'll get above a 2.

Should correct myself by replacing "western popular music" with "modern rock/pop music".

nah just blunted af

u fokin wot

i don't even know if I want to listen to this, it's perfect in my mind

Legit question, does /daily/ want me to hold off on reviewing Fishmans? I know it's too much of a meme right now. I mean I doubt anyone will actually care, but I was thinking about it earlier.

Glad you liked the review! And yeah, it's kinda pathetic when you really think about it, the lack of African music when it's so influential. I didn't even consider that.

Also, I will be doing Fishmans in chronological order.

as long as you shit on it you'll be fine

(you'll be fine anyway so long as you're not obnoxious and spamming it)

>eluvium - lambent material
this came as a near-total surprise. i really do not like copia at all so my expectations were really low for this. tracks 1-3 and 5 are overly gorgeous pieces of ambient, just grounded enough to make an emotional connection with. "zerthis," however, is my absolute favorite type of ambient, with simple, emotive chord changes over some heart-wrenching noisy drone. seriously A+ shit, reminds me a ton of October Language (definitely my favorite ambient album). fantastic stuff.

hoi hoi nice!
didn't see your choices before, hope you'll like the rest aswell

i think you could go 5/5 for me liking these albums, they all look great

>I read your name as "porn" every time I'm sorry.
lol I get that on every site I'm on.

>I should really learn Portuguese.
cop the reissue via Light in the Attic; it has some really good translations of the tracks, as approved by Erasmo Carlos himself!

>dj screw - chapter 013: leanin on a switch
screw is at his best when his rap boys are doing freestyle. the really long tracks on here are really satisfying and i never got bored nor felt it was just slowed down gangsta rap gimmick.

also now i got a phd in sellin brick

>expectations were really low for this
thats what happens when you listen to copia

btw listen to this, it's absolutely the most beautiful thing ever
youtube.com/watch?v=DdzCnht_uxM

btw nation time and plays well are also lit af, never heard the motifs.
