Thing is, the jobs nowadays are nowhere near as good a deal as they were even in the 70s and 80s. Back in the day, you could work in manufacturing as a tradesman, join a union, and live pretty comfortably so long as you didn't piss senior people off. Anymore, there's practically no openings for anyone that doesn't have at least five years experience, and the wages haven't kept up with employment.
The unions have gotten too weak, the corporations have more money than god, and the government is all bought and paid for.
Sure, some people do well. Really, really well. But for the average guy, things have gone downhill really really badly since our grandfathers were working.
