Uh oh, Sup Forums. I am sending my computer to be repaired and I have private things on my hard drive... Does anybody know how I can wipe my hard drive without it looking broken? I don't have time to order any strong magnets.
Also, battle station thread

if you nuke your hard drive how will they fix it? Do you have a windows disk or a recovery partition?

Oh, and I'll buy someone a few trading cards on steam if they fix my problem... Obviously it'll take a while, until after my computer is fixed, but I'll save your profile link to add you after its repaired and you can tell me what cards you'd like.

Well I'm not concerned about them fixing it. I just don't want them having access to my passwords and such, so I'd rather it be broken than them having access to sensitive info... I don't want to completely shatter the hard drive, either, because then they may not fix it as it may not be covered by warranty

Move the files else where and delete them if they are of an illegal nature. Otherwise the people repairing it wont give a fuck. Unless there is a reason to suspect something they aren't going to go searching through all your files or looking at deleted files.

Alternative just remove the HDD when you send it out if they are not fixing software.

Last option delete the files and then be sure to fill up the rest of the empty space with other files so the info can't be recovered (the space gets overwritten)

you didn't answer my question, fucktits.

i fix computers but if you can't even answer a question, fuck you.

I would move them elsewhere, actually I'd just write all of the info on paper and whatever until I get my computer back, but the problem is that it will not send a display signal to the monitor and I've tried a number if different things. It all narrows down to the computer, so, there is no way I can see the files to delete it move them

How do I keep my Windows on new hard drive from old one? I don't need to all my old files. Need to replace my old faulty drive.

Sorry about that hahaha, I'm actually not sure what you meant by those. If by windows disk, it operates on windows, yes. Otherwise I have no disks for windows
And again with the recovery thing, if you just mean the recovery files in the computer, yes, but anything external that would have to do with recovery, then no

Is this your only computer?
If not
Pop out the hard drive and plug it into something else to get and manipulate the info

so you're worried they'll find your kiddie porn

great job being a pedo OP

Pull your hard drive before you send it in to be fixed. Problem solved.

Details nuke and boot

My only other computer is a very old one, and I might not know much, but won't the hard drive likely he incompatible with an older computer? I think its one that runs off of Vista if that gives any indication of its age

They'd accept it even without a hard drive? HP computer Btw. Have you guys dealt with HP before?

why... why dont you just put the files on a usb stick? if you cant, are you really going to miss those pictures THAT much? you do know you can take out the hardrive and still move the files elsewhere right?

>being this retarded and still downloading illegal porn lel

Op said battlestation
I'm just wondering, would this be a fun build?
>Pic related
Pizza box PC
If you go budget PC on this is it worth?

Budget all the way down to the box.

Dubs checked. What are you sending it in to be fixed for? A faulty harddrive? Some other issue? Any tech place should have test drives to install and test. Tell them you don't want to chance losing your data.
They will prolly have to install some drivers specific to your hardware, but they shouldn't bitch. If they do take it somewhere else.

Well I can't see the display, and I don't know how I'd transfer anything without the display. I don't care what they see but I have my passwords written down there and I don't want random strangers having my passwords to my accounts that have money in them like Goigle Play, Steam, and other things
Can you explain how to take the hard drive out and move files that way?

Nice dubs you got there

Checked

You know you can Google what you are asking there is like a metric fuck ton of videos/how to articles on the web for that shit.

Just reinstall windows over the existing partition

Thanks but they weren't max dubs :(

It won't send a display signal to any monitor, tried different monitors and different HDMI cords, nothing's working. I'm not sure what is causing the issue, it could be something simple like the HDMI port just failing, but I have no way to tell

Uh oh

I've had no luck with googling this stuff, like I said I don't want it to be obvious I broke it or whatever. People are suggesting I just keep the hard drive which I may do if possible but I don't want to take a chance on not being able to do that

>Well I'm not concerned about them fixing it. I just don't want them having access to my passwords and such, so I'd rather it be broken than them having access to sensitive info
There ya go buddy
Don't send it to be fixed

>Sending it in for repairs
>paying money for someone else to do simple shit
Jesus IT is such a low skill career that rips people off. Should just be called Google search expert.

Might be a bit if a DIY but ever attempt fixing the HDMI port itself or replacing it? I'm not the best at Port fixing but people already have the knowledge lying around somewhere.

R8 me

Your video card is dead.
It's ALWAYS the video card when the monitor dies.

drill a hole in it

Well. I want the one problem with it to be fixed, the display issue. I just don't know if the hard drive will make the warranty void if I break it, so I'd want to make it look like a defect
Luckily I have a warranty so it will actually be free as long as I don't make the warranty void, which is what I'm trying to do
I would try, but I don't feel comfortable doing that since I don't know too much about computers, nor do I know if that's actually the problem with it. I've seen things also saying it could be the graphics card, or even the motherboard

you touch anything and you'll void the warranty. basically you're fucked kid.

What could have caused it to break? I haven't bumped my computer or anything and its pretty new, got any ideas? Or does this kind of thing just sort of happen sometimes?

Remove the hard drive, buy another one for $50, replace it with the fresh one. You have to create a thread about this, you fucking kiddy diddler?

is it a laptop?

Pretty sure they will know I replaced it and make warranty void if I did that
Nope, not a laptop. HP Pavilion desktop, running on Windows 10

How are you even competent enough to post on an image board if you don't know how to remove a hard drive? It's plug and play man, the simplest shit ever.

check all cables, turn it on and off, that's about all you can do to check. get another monitor if you can just to see if it's the monitor but otherwise you're totally screwed.

I seriously doubt they would care man. It's a hard drive...

I'm pretty sure I can remove it, just, I don't know if they'll accept it if it doesn't have all of the parts that it came with

...

Silicon lottery logic. You got the short end of the stick and got a bad card.

No, it won't void the warranty. I sent my laptop with ssd and high performance ram to service before. They don't even bother windows. I checked windows events. It hasnt booted windows since I sent it. So, probably they removed everything out of my laptop and used diagnostic tools.

So, you're better to buy cheap hard drive from eBay and install Linux then send to service. They won't bother it if it was your display issues. Trust me, it won't void your warranty.

THEY WON'T. jesus, you touch anything at all, in fact it should have a 'warranty' sticker that you'll need to BREAK to open the case, anything you do will void the warranty.

Well there's absolutely no possible way that it's the hard drive that's causing a monitor connection failure. So what difference does it make if the hard drive is there? They can throw their own in.

are you simple? if he swaps any component it voids the warranty. they don't give 2 fucks if you install Linux or fucking XP on it, if you touch the hardware you're fucked.

Oh yeah you should probably ask about that. Some companies are sticky with that stuff. I think HP is pretty bad about it.

Not op but how do I keep windows in new HD? It came with 7 but upgraded free to 10. I already have files backed so that's not an issue.

I was a Geek Squad tech and we always downloaded your hd to a flash drive in secret and later on would get your cp and nudes for our own collection. My collection is epic.

I work on compuers I ssearch through files all the time.

Yeah I've tried all that, got no results. Its why I know its the computer and not the cords/monitor
So just bad luck eh, that sucks to know lol
Well I will consider it, but as I don't have the time to buy a magnet to wipe it I also don't have time for a new hard drive to come in
Yeah that's what I'm scared of, and I'm probably gonna go with the safe route of assuming it will void the warranty
Well unfortunately I haven't got any CP or the likes of it so I guess some people are gonna be dissapointed :(

Hard drive, ram, etc are protected by law that they can't void warranty by aftermarket. But if you put aftermarket hard drive then it couldn't load up and blame your laptop then send to service and they find it's aftermarket hard drive so they will not honor for warranty. So, n just replace crap hard drive or remove hard drive before you send to service. They will not bother if there no hard drive. They have to what they do for job. If display issues then its display job. Not software or hardware that is not relate to display.

Check mate

if youre on a laptop you might as well just get a new laptop. If youre on pc you take out the hardrive and put it in other pc. tech support is to fix pc not ruin your life. they dont snoop, they fix. if youre that concerned, then have them sign a peice of paper stating if there are any changes to personal info you will take legal action

you can also
>change your password on steam via phone

wait hold up...google play? youre having phone issues? theyre just going to factory reset your phone and change the screen. you do realize you can plug it into pc and download files that way right? what the hell OP

listen bitch
i fix computers
fuck you

dude you can even do this with a laptop via a HDMI cable. holy fuck OP youre killing me here. im actually confused as to why youre trying to void your warrenty

I wouldn't have written down passwords on my computer if I could remember them and now I know it was a stupid move to not just write them down on paper in the first place
Both of those accounts have money on them, and they were only two examples if accounts, I have more for other things, and while I know they aren't supposed to snoop, all I ever hear is about how they do it anyway, so I can't really trust some random stranger to not take my private info when its all right there

Microwave it
but not too long

ive had my laptop fixed so many times at best buy with no problem. all i know is if i was IT i wouldnt have time to snoop. id lose my job so quick becaue my customer would know asap that changes were made.

>download steam app via mobile
>download google play via mobile
>download email via moible
>say forgot password on google + steam
>change passwords
>WRITE PASSWORDS ON PAPER
>dont break warrenty
>fix laptop
ez fucking pz

i feel so bad for you because you must be like 50 years old in order to not understand any of this. i thought you had illegal shit on your pc but if its petty shit like this whats the big deal??

is....is this b8..?

I'd need my email password to make any changes to other passwords
If you want to know the truth, I'm just simply retarded, not 50 years old

boot from cd or usb stick with acronis or dariks boot and nuke. use yumi for easily making a bootable usb stick. or just take the hdd out of your rig.

I have experience with HP.

They do not accept computers without hard drives. (I worked for them for the past 7 years, I would know.)

Your best bet is to hit it with a strong magnet. (Don't worry, you can restore everything from sys32.)

ok OP.. heres what you do..
>say forget password on email
>type in your phone number
>you get a code
>enter code via the app on your phone
>new password
>do shit in other post

if you still cant figure it out, you need to go to best buy and ask for help. because i literally cant help you beyond that

has anyone said delete system32?
dont get bait Sup Forumsro

is the pc still bootable?

No magnet available. Nothing else I can do?
Nobody has said that and I wouldn't do it even if I could (problem is that nothing displays)
Yes. Fans run. Power supply stays solid green. Power goes to mouse and keyboard. I have tried different moniters and different cords, nothing worked

did you try it without your grapgic card

No, what would that do?

if you are too concerned that s.o. will find your pizza donĀ“t send it anywhere fucking pedo

turning it off, removing the battery, holding the power button for 10 sec, put battery back in, then see what happens. usually worked when my laptop display wouldnt work.

maybe your gpu is broken, try it without it in the pci slot and use the motherboard vga/dvi slots

I have done that previously and it worked, but it didn't this time
I'll search that stuff up to see what you're talking about

HDD have been SATA/PATA since the mid 90's. IT's compatible, without a doubt. IT'll be SATA

What do you do for HP? Mop thier floors?

I wish you spend a great year ahead that starts with happiness and ends with that too. Happy New year. Enjoy the leaks and leak one yourself - snap-leak-cf

Fuck you. How many years have you worked for HP?

You probably still defrag.

>no magnet
sorry, your shit out of luck.

your only other option is reverse double crack.

boot in safety

Boot it in as a slave. There are programs for this kind of thing. Run it 4 times:

Once as random noise
Once to zero it out
Once to one it out
Once to zero it out again

Not denying the floor mopping I see.....

Don't listen to this guy. I've worked at HP for 11 years. We totally accept computers without hardrives, no problem.

I agree with the magnet thing, tho, it's a great way to clean all the junk and hidden viruses. (If you don't have access to a heavy duty magnet, a microwave actually works too. Just be careful not to put out in the for too long.)

After that, boot in safe mode and restore from sys32.

Honestly, this could probably even fix the display problems you described; this is generally the first line of attack whenever I receive a computer. You're hardrive's working memory probably hasn't been cleared in a while.

About the warranty, you can remove your hardrive, just attach a note in the induce of the computer, saying that you magnetized it for a sys32 backup. But make sure to include the hardrive when you send it in though, otherwise the warranty is void.

1. "Move" all of your "sensitive" files onto a flash drive and keep it somewhere you could never lose it.
2. Reinstall windows over the existing partition.
If the nature of the repairs is hardware based they should have no need to snoop.
If it is software based they should have no reason to attempt recovery of deleted files. Of course there should be no reason that going out of their way to recover said files should be a priority, since they will most likely not know about them.

Underrated post.
