Anyways I don't watch much anime and this is lauded as THE anime movie to watch.

I thought it was alright; the visuals were nice and most of the animation was pretty good. Soundtrack was also cool and fit the cyber punk setting. Though there are some things that were a bit confusing.

Why where those ugly kids antagonistic towards Tetsuo?

Why did the little girl tell Tetsuo about Akira?

How did that underpass protect the colonel from the event?

Don't worry about it, animus often has gaps.

Did you watch Ghost in the Shell yet?

Imo Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust should be THE anime kino everyone should see.

I remember playing a Vampire Hunter D for PS1 back in the day. The talking hand thing creeped me out.

Also, to OP: I recently watched this movie too. I didn't really like it. It has a few nice visuals and stuff like that but nothing about it made me fal in love with it.

Akira is lauded for the painstaking animation process that produced it, not so much for the story.

Ghost in the Shell is a far superior film, and is pretty much the peak of "Stand-alone" anime films given that EoE - my personal pick for the best - requires the TV show as viewing beforehand.

Damn right.

If you ask me Evangelion earned it's place. The best. The last 10 episodes and the movie is the realist shit.

>Why where those ugly kids antagonistic towards Tetsuo?

Because he didn't have his psychic shit in check and they knew he would fuck things up

>Why did the little girl tell Tetsuo about Akira?

He forced her to.

>How did that underpass protect the colonel from the event?

Dunno, plot mostly, but I think that the xplosion is less a nuclear bomb and more just detstructive light. Also the psychic kids probably knew he'd be safe there.

Kanye oughta be involved with the live-action version in some capacity, should Hell freeze over and that comes to pass.

Long time Akirafag here.
Basically, the movie was pretty eye candy that pushed the boundaries of animation for the time.
That said, it sucked, and was rushed.
The manga was WAY better.

Akira tried to do too much with regard to story. But that's not the reason everyone keeps watching it, buying it on dvd then blu ray and bodily a4k re master. The visuals/animation were and still are unsurpassed. So much detail in every frame. The ost is also unique and incredibly evocative. Its cybernetic and cyber punk dystopia is the one to beat. Also it's nice to have an anime discussion on tv. Sup Forums is just4kids

>Sup Forums is retarded

You can probably get a better discussion there since they would know more about the movie.

It's overrated desu. The manga is much better.

Alright, so it's praised over its artistic ability which I can see. While watching it i was just trying to piece things together and it just felt off.

I saw Ninja Scroll. I liked it. Short and to the point with cool fights and animations. I'll check out Ghost in the Shell.

Sup Forumsfags hate Akira.
>muh, it's not traditional anime
>muh, no lolis

>THE anime movie to watch
>laughingcartoonwhores.png

>Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust
>cartoonwhoreslaughingevenharder.jpeg

shut up, plotfag. No joke the ending was Alejandro Jodorowsky's idea. You got kino'd. The manga's post-movie ending scenario is just 'MAD MAX + MUH GRORIOUS NIPPON EMPIRE'

'Sup Forumsfags' hate 14 year old retards who watch Akira and three other well known sci-fi/action movies and declare themselves masters of the medium. See pretty much anyone in this thread for an idea of what that means.

Ninja scroll was trashy af. Ghost in the shell sac episodes are the high water mark of anime especially solid state society. The first movie is a little flat/dull though. The second is. ...well you'll see. But the episodes damn, might have to re watch em

Oh and legend of the galactic heroes as well as gits. I actually cannot believe lotgh got made, it's more than a hundred episodes long and kids prob won't enjoy it. Written by a historian to boot

pretty much this, otomo had no idea how to handle the story in the short tiem of teh movie, also i think teh manga wasnt even finished when he made the movie.

Trashy is good sometimes. Like one of those violent 80s movies.

I liked LotGH, but I honestly feel like it's best watched as a middle/high schooler. A lot of the "brilliant" strategies would seem like "no shit" moments to adults, and themes about questioning authority would better serve youths.

And as great as LotGH is, GitS as a TV and film series is significantly above it in quality.

I played it too but didn't creep me out, maybe because he's somewhat comical.

What would you recommend than?

Yeah as I said in an above post gits is the high water mark. But im not a trip fag so no one can tell. Still absolutely flabbergasted that lotgh got made. Gits is an easy sell, lotgh is game of thrones in space (the books anyway) with ww2 stylings and overtones. And the space battle tactics are crap but that's more down to the fact that animation tech in the 80s was never going to able to more than what we got. But the heart and soul of the series, the theme of humanity under autocratic empire vs democratic society is not one you're likely to find in any other show no matter what age range it's aimed at.

TETSUO

Go and take a snapshot of Sup Forums right now and post it here.

>tell us how to be patrician
Fine

>movies
>early days
Animerama trilogy, if you have to pick one make it Belladonna of Sadness
>80s
Wings of Honneamise: The Royal Space Force. Before Akira this was the highest ever budget in an anime. Possibly the most thoughtful original science-fiction movie ever made.
>90s
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade. Everyone knows this one, but for a good reason. It's amazing. True patricians watch the superior live-action movies but this is still top-notch stuff.

Everyone knows that OVAs and tv are the true domain of the patrician though so let's go there.

>tv
>70s
Aim for the Ace! Simply the greatest sports story ever told.
Galaxy Express 999. Amazingly executed space-adventure.
Rose of Versailles. Great French Revolution drama.
Mobile Suit Gundam. All that success wasn't a fluke, the show still holds up strong as hell.

>80s
Space Runaway Ideon. Patricians know this is the GOAT /m/ series.
Fang of the Sun Dougram. Like Lactating Gay Homosexuals with the spaceships and homoeroticism replaced with robots colonialism.
Armored Trooper VOTOMS. Like Dougram with the colonialism replaced by meta-commentary on the nature of tv heroes.

I could keep going.

I also watched akira recently, and was a bit confused by it

Who exactly were the three ugly kids?
What was the movie's message/moral?
Was tetsuo in control when he started using his powers?

Akira's animation is great, probably my favorite animovie. I wish it had a more extensive middle based off the manga. Tetsuo bossing the clowns around would have been cool.
Watched it just a week ago, it was beautiful despite /d/ speaking so little.

>not Fist of the North Star

Theee ugly kids are what's left of the first generation psychics. They had the same potential as Tetsuo but were constrained by the government after Akira's unchecked power levelled old Tokyo.

The movie's about adolescence, both in the normal sense of how fucked up growing up can be, and in the greater sense by implying that humanity as a species is still immature and that the psychic outbursts experienced by Tetsuo and the others are like an evolutionary puberty. Humanity biologically isn't ready for this yet, as demonstrated by Tetsuo's grisly awakening, but also socially we aren't responsible enough to handle the power, as shown by the power struggles and urban decay which are tearing Neo-Tokyo apart. The city is like an edgy and confused teenager, ready to E.X.P.L.O.D.E.

And as for Tetsuo, at the most he's as responsible for what he's doing as any teenager, keeping in mind that teenagers are wired to be awful. That combined with his shit upbringing, neurosis and emerging superpowers put me in the opinion that he should be cut some slack. He's humanity's violent immaturity personified, it's not his fault.

>never read manga or watch anime
>own the complete akira manga anyway

It's that good OP, read the manga.

KANEDA

Go home kid

>what was the message
Absolute power corrupts absolutely

so good man

the soundtrack, the gimickless art style
the grotesque animation, largely avoiding satire
solid flow, no dead space

The manga was better desu

I hate all those people saying manga is better. AKIRA is great because it's short.

Overrated JUNK.

First let me say that I love animus and cyberpunk.
Finally got to see it last week.
Great movie for its time but below average content.
Boy to god in an afternoon?
It would a great plot for a 24 episode animu but not a movie.
For the life of me I can't understand the praise where people call it the best ever.
But still a very good movie, just not a top 5.

Nice review, very informative. We might have the next Armond White on our hands here.

You can discuss anything you want, stop asking.

It just feels like there's a lot of unexplained topics though.

The manga is better, the story becomes more fleshed out but never feels overlong. It's only 6 volumes

Reading the last volume and having it sync up with the movie OST almost perfectly was the most amazing experience.

Sup Forums knows nothing about anime though

RASE RA RASE RA RASE RASE RASE RA

>People smashing each other with aluminum baseball bats speeding at 100 mph
>Character is wailing on somebody and is stopped
>"WHAT!? ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL THEM!?"

I thought they were trying to kill each other the whole time

my favorite movie

90% of anime is fucking shit
People don't want to discuss "this season of anime" with you because anime is abhorrent shlock for retards
People want to discuss the same shows over over again because there are 20-30 series/movies worth a shit

You stupid niggers couldn't think of a single good show in the last 6 years, and even if you could you're not allowed to say it because that would be recommendation and that would give you and your sect of autists a collective heart attack

reminder that a live action remake was/is planned at warner bros. at one point it was gonna star meme and JGL. not that tetsuo became travis in the script.

if they could have pulled off the look promised in the concept artwork it might have even been cool.

Toward the Terra is phenomenal and is easily my favorite

The anime is great but it's got holes. Read the manga, everything is different and better explained there. You can find it in many online reading sites. These questions are explained in the comics.

There are these kids with psychokinetic abilities, Akira was the one with the most potential. Their past, and Tetsuo and Kaneda's are better explained there. In the comics, Akira was not dead or dismembered, but in cryogenic state, and he was awakened. In the comics, that crazy religious fanatic is actually a really important character, a female one, that was a child from previous experiments with this awesome psychic power. Really worth reading.

Bosozoku culture, bikers gangs, japanese Yankees.

>that mind fuck in Ghost in the Shell 2 in Kim's mansion

No. That user was sincere and informed.

?

The delinquent "Yankee" thing was big on Japan amongst high-schoolers. There is a lot of manga and media about the subject. Since it was a thing amongst teenagers, of course they'd fight a lot and get hurt a lot, but getting to the point of killing someone was extremely rare, it would be for those with no future and no regards to society, yakuza-to-be material.

There's a 1976 documentary called Godspeed You! Black Emperor about the matter

How do I know which dub is which? I have the bluray

Original dub = Kah-nay-dah
new dub = Canada

Now you only need to watch Evangelion, Ghost in the shell, Mind games and angel`s egg and you are set for life

DAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH
DAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH

>Tetsuo is writhing in agony after getting his arm blown off
>Kaneda struggling to pick up a massive rock so he can drop it on his head
>TETSUUUOOOOOOOOO

Oh

Which is better? The elongated syllables are killing me here

Your choice, I'd go with Canada

What's up with Americans preferring to watch dubbed movies and anime? Does having English as your first language spoil the will to learn other languages?

Like 90% of the animes, it's surrounded by atomic bomb imagery.

Not "adolescence".

I never listen to english dubs, the voice actors are often so terrible (including the dubs for Akira). Just because its animated doesn't mean everyone has to have the bubbly, energetic voice of a cartoon animal

Akira (at least the adaptation) is meidocre as fuck, only remembered fondly because it's 80s babbys first annie may + it has production values that will never be replicated due to the fact that cel shaded animation is ded now.

Japanese audio is also "dubbed" you fucking Sup Forumsutist. Cartoon characters can't speak.

Read the Manga, story is condensed a lot to fit into a movie.

If you want to get into more normalfag friendly anime, Studio Ghibli have some great movies. Recommend Nausicaa valley of the wind

The movie is quite amazing. It depicts life as a force accelerated and untameable. It depicts how human meddling can create devastating force and how violence seems inherent in us. and the ability to become one with a universal consciousness. I found it quite enlightening.

GitS is essentially the Japanese retelling of Neuromancer, for the uninitiated. Definitely a must see, but not all that ground breaking in its commentary on humanity, life, AI and sentience. Gorgeous, score is amazing, and movie is the right sort of placid discomfort. Still a triumph. But Akira achieves much more.

the manga are ALWAYS better than their anime adaptation

And the manga is not better. I like to think of the two in this way: the manga is the Bible and the movie is church. The movie is much more symbolic and an experience and so ideas are metaphorical and associative but not direct. The manga is awesome, and where it goes after book 3 is awesome, but you don't get the spiritual vibe from the manga quite like you do from the movie.

I-is Layzner okay?
m.youtube.com/watch?v=gJWpOqrMtjs
Watching Xabungle right now as well.

The true kino of Japanination right here.
m.youtube.com/watch?v=qxHgVBpKNEo

GitS is shit.

Fuck off.

Is this the Sup Forumseddit thread?

>It just feels like there's a lot of unexplained topics though.
No, it doesn't.

I don't see Akira in that pic
Checkmate nerd

I've only read the first volume of the manga so far, and I feel like most of the changes made for the movie were better, like Tetsuo being an orphan.

Would another capeshit or GoT thread make you feel better?

Patlabor OVA + Films is GOAT animekino

Notable mentions:
Miyazaki toons (don't call it anime you dirty weeb or he'll come and get you)

This user gets it

You my nigga right here

m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ky2dU6oIBAw

I dunno if I'd call it patrician but from an /m/ standpoint rather than a Sup Forums one? Both are great choices. Layzner was cancelled so the ending is strange, but there are OVAs to fix that. The action is top-tier, easily some of the best among TV series. You won't find many of the common tricks used to cut corners, either. Characters can leave a little to be desired but EIJI and most of the antagonists make up for it. Gosterro is an absolute animal and it's great. Xabungle is fun. Tomino really did a good job on it (I'm kind of a tominofag though) and I think you'll enjoy the rest.

CAN'T STOP

I've loved it forever. Then I go on the internet and find out it (and the sequel) is considered by the anime crowd to be some of the worst trash ever. Fuck those people.
