I think it's the bone. The flesh was damaged beyond healing around the exposed bone and rotted off. The tissue in the bone is likely dead as well due to having too many nutrient pathways cut off.
I am pleased with all the amputation posts here. If I had a fluffy I would definitely amputate the hind legs so it could play with stuff but have limited mobility. That would keep it docile but somewhat happy. Maybe give it wheels if it was being particularly good for a day.

Reducing it's mobility even further will keep it from breaking things and interacting with stuff you don't want them too. It's really personal preference. I'd also like it to compare itself to the other "normal" fluffy I would have.
