britpop more like shitpop lmao

>the bends
>britpop

>all those one-hit wonder albums

were they really that strapped for entries?

Saint Etienne is pretty good.

perfectly fine
only because i love pulp

This. It's way too dark and melancholic for britpop.

Also, Oasis are garbage and Manics, Mansun, Pulp and Suede easily shit all over the rest of those bands. Pretty mediocre list.

Placebo should be number one if they're going to be considered britpop.

It's a shame Babylon Zoo weren't included. They're painfully underrated.

>No Smiths
>No Supergrass
>No Spiritualized
>Thinks Radiohead aren't britpop

Also Kula Shaker should be in there somewhere

britpop wasn't a real genre, just a term coined by the media desperate to stir up some kind of cultural movement.

just look at the list, most of these bands sound nothing alike.

>No Supergrass
You blind m8?

What is a real genre, and who decides the genre name?

if you listen to pretty vacant, you think punk
if you listen to dancing queen, you think pop

if you listened to james you wouldn't think britpop

If you listen to Oasis you think britpop
If you listen to Blur you think britpop
If you listen to Suede you think britpop
If you listen to Republica you think britpop
If you listen to Catatonia you think britpop
If you listen to Pulp you think britpop
If you listen to Supergrass you think britpop
If you listen to Kula Shaker you think britpop
If you listen to Ash you think britpop
If you listen to The Verve you think britpop

Britpop was one of the many genres James dabbled in, along with Indie Pop, Baggy / Madchester, Jangle Pop, Alternative Rock, Pop Rock.

>If you listen to The Verve you think britpop
Not shoegaze/psych rock era Verve

>implying a band can't change genres

I wouldn't at all

Oasis were a straight up classic rock band, Blur were indie, Suede were glam. Republica were some weird blend of electronic pop-punk, Pulp were experimental, Verve were dream and shoegazy. Basically everyone was making different forms of alternative rock and sounded nothing alike.

I'd bet you anything nobody has every heard a record for the first time and classified it as "britpop"

*ever heard

>Not shoegaze/psych rock era Verve
They are most well known for their britpop albums . Most people don't think of shoegaze when The Verve is mentioned.

Well as someone who has been really into Britpop for years and knows even the obscure bands, this should be interesting

>Back in Denim
Great and overlooked album, but more proto britpop than anything

James - Laid
Great album by a consistent band, should be higher

>Placebo
Never been a fan of them, their commercial success is a mystery to me

>The Divine Comedy
Fucking awesome band, Neil Hannon is one of the best and wittiest lyricists of his generation, should be higher though

>Mansun
Are you kidding me? These guys should be at least in top 20, unless they include Six as well

>Catatonia
Trash, doesn't help that people will confuse them with the metal band

>Ocean Colour Scene
Lame The Jam knock off

>Space
Band with interesting gimmick that ultimately falls apart

>Super Furry Animals - Radiator
Another fantastic album, makes me wonder what will be at top spots when they already included several great albums

>Sleeper
One Hit Wonder

>Teenage Fanclub
Great band, but they are power pop not Britpop

>Black Grape
Lamer incarnation of Happy Mondays

>Ash
Never liked them

>Everything Must Go
>32
OK, this list is officially a joke

>Sci-Fi Lullabies
One of the best compilations ever, this however makes me assume they will put more albums by one artist

>Tellin’ Stories
Good album but not The Charlatans bestt

>Vauxhall and I
How the fuck is Morrissey Britpop?

>Fuzzy Logic
Radiator is better

>A Northern Soul
Very good chamber pop album, most overlooked in their discography

>Hefner
Who?

>In It for the Money
Awesome album, I actually like it more than the debut

>Kenickie
LOL

>Gene
Most blatant Smiths rip off ever, still OK though

>New Wave
One of the first Britpop albums, deserves its spot

>Lovelife
Mediocre album

>Modern Life Is Rubbish
Best Blur album from their Britpop trilogy

>Shampoo
Literally who

>another Morrissey album

>Cornershop
Crap

>Verve were dream and shoegazy
Shoegaze wasn't a real genre, just a term coined by the media desperate to stir up some kind of cultural movement.

My Bloody Valentine are alternative rock

Missing the point entirely, I'm not assigning any of those bands to genres. I'm showing you how different they all were and how labelling them as a whole is retarded.

>The La's
More proto britpop, I guess they will include Stone Roses next

>Suede
No surprises here, expected it a bit higher though

>I Should Coco
Fair place

>His ‘N’ Hers
Great album, deserved spot

>Urban Hymns
Very long and uneven album, the singles are GOAT, the rest is hit or miss

>Definitely Maybe
Better than Morning Glory

>Blur s/t
That's not even Britpop anymore

>This Is Hardcore
I'm OK with this

>Elastica
Good album, but 6th place? Fuck no

>Dog Man Star
Should be easily in top 3

>Morning Glory
Overrated album, but at least it isn't first

>The Bends
Not Britpop wtf

>Parklife
Would be great if they cut down the filler

>Different Class
Well at least they got #1 right

Overall pretty mediocre list

You can say the same thing about pop music. Abba are pop, so are The Spice Girls, but they sound completely different.

OK and here's a list of albums that should have been included

My Life Story - The Golden Mile
Jack - Pioneer Soundtracks
Puressence - Only Forever
Longpigs - The Sun is often Out
Rialto - Rialto
Shack - HMS Fable
Kula Shaker - K
Steangelove - Love and Other Demons
Dodgy - Homegrown
Geneva - Further
The Bluetones - Expecting to Fly
Ultrasound - Everything Picture
Travis - The Man Who could also qualify

It's weird how Pitchfork seems to like Britpop but they panned almost all post-britpop bands except Elbow and Doves

>tfw no Coldplay

I don't think they included poet Britpop

Also funny fact: the highest-rated Coldplay album on P4K is Mylo Xyloto

At least they didn't include this garbage

Not that guy, but shoegaze has a discernible, physical sound and isn't culture/country dependent. You had lots of bands from all corners of the world exploring noisy guitars drowned in effects with whispering vocals harmonies underneath. Meanwhile Britpop was very British-culture orientated. Hell, Suede's s/t, arguably the originator of the whole thing is pretty much a modern glam rock album.

The Auteurs debut came out before Suede

I think its a fucking killer list. Oasis should have been #1 though because Morning Glory is fucking amazing

Embarrassing

Yeah where the fuck was long pigs? She said is fucking killer. K is also a great album

angery

Also Coldplay, Doves, Travis, ext ext 2000's sadboy bands are post-britpop.

The La's are fucking HOT

That's one cool cover.

>me reading this list

Can you believe there has been a Britpop band called Gay Dad?

Dookie and American Idiot are great albums, but I wouldn't call them britpop.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who noticed Kula Shaker's absence. K is a good album.

>What's the Story Morning Glory not #1
>Pulp #1
>a bunch of non britpop albums like Blur's self titled and Placebo on the list

Pitchfork are so fucking clueless

I agree with Placebo not being britpop, but Blur's self-titled is britpop as fuck.
