I've felt the same way after bogposting here on /classical/. I've always had a Bach bust on my piano and I have always studied avidly his scores. Bogposting felt like insulting my father, or at least it was pretty close to that.

interpretative performing goes back to classical and baroque eras, though. even more so since scores were not littered with specific concrete instructions regarding tempi and dynamics, vast majority of scores back then did not utilize metronome markings, etc.
literalism has its roots from the romantic era because that's when composers became increasingly autistic about how they wanted their works performed.
