Children try to emulate the parent that is the same sex as them and use the opposite sex parent as something to model a future mate from.
So if you're a male the most important thing would be having a father that emulates virtuous masculine/noble values and a mother that is a decent wholesome woman. Basically a "traditional" upbringing, it's called that for a reason and we can already quantify that straying away from this typically leads to worse results.
